Title: Butterfly Labs SGL600G miner Post by: TwentyGotoTen on January 17, 2015, 10:50:41 PM I'm a total mining noob but I just picked up a Butterfly Labs SGL600G miner off of craigslist for $80US(was $1299 new), it also has a power supply. When I bot it, I saw it working for the kid who owned it. I know with btc being so low right now @$200ish per btc that I'm probably not going to get roi on this even for the $80 I spent, but I bought it to learn on & have fun with my sons as a crypto hobbyist. Anyone with any advice how to set it up or what altcoins or pools I could mine on. I always thought peercoin was kind of cool, and I love BTC but any ideas out there? Thanks & I greatly appreciate any help or responses.

All I've got is the unit, power supply & usb cable. No software or instructions were available

It would be a fun toy I suppose - perhaps use it to play the lotto with one of the BTC solo mining pools. Otherwise the hashrate is not going to earn you anything. I've got a ton of these sitting around that have turned into paperweights. Going to try some solo mining I guess or SHA-256 alt coin with lower difficulty. I do pay for electric svc so by the kw hour it probably not going to make anything unless I can run it with a small solar panel as a lottery ticket machine. Thanks for the heads up hdmediaservices

They have been known to be of poor quality and have actually shorted out some equipment - I guess through the USB port connection. So I'm contemplating getting that & the rig would be total 90GH+/- running thru the Rasp pi, power consumption is my primary concern, so if I could connect it to a solar panel with dc to ac power inverter that covered the total power demand, then I might actually see some roi at some point because of little to no power costs.

Honestly - at that low of a hash, you won't see much of anything trickle in. Your best bet is to go the "lotto" route. I think the problem too is that other faster units will solve things before you do and then your unit will submit work that has already been solved. I started off with the BFL units -- then went to the Antminers -- then when to Scrypt mining with the Zeus X6 models and finally the A2s. Never bought them at retail. I find it fun - especially in the Scrypt world where you can mine so many different coins.
