Title: Everyone Tip on Facebook with ChangeTip! Help Make Bitcoin Go Viral.
Post by: colinistheman on January 18, 2015, 07:34:09 PM
This is awesome. ChangeTip.com (https://www.changetip.com/) now allows you to send bitcoin to another user's wall on Facebook.

I have just sent the most bitcoin today that I have in a long time because of ChangeTip now working on Facebook.

Judging from the scrolling list of ChangeTip transactions (under your ChangeTip account page) it looks like about 75% of ChangeTip's tipping is being done by Facebook users now. That's huge, and it just came out.

I'm tipping the shit out of everyone of my friend's list. I just spent $40 at CoinBase to do so. You don't have to send much, just like 25 cents or even less if you want.

You can see who accepted the tip in your ChangeTip account as well. Pretty cool. 3 people already accepted my tip.

I suspect this will make bitcoin go viral and I suggest everyone does it.

If only 5% of people on my friends list gets and uses bitcoin as a result of this, that's a big deal! And they may send to others, and so on.

Chaaarge!

Make sure you're not "spamming" on their platform, so you don't get your account flagged/deleted.

I'm only sending 1 message to each person's wall. That's fine isn't it?

I assume for us, mortals, it is "safe", yes.
But, there's always a "but".

If it goes viral, it will cause a lot of "spam" on their network. They're known for their censorship.

Yeah, you will be able.
Go through changetip website and see what is it exactly.

Yes, that's what is so cool about it. You can introduce people to bitcoin by giving it to them.

Holding back doesn't help bitcoin either, so might as well go for it. If they block it, we're right where we were a few days ago without FB changetip. Only potential gains to be had here.

ChangeTip is not a new concept, it looks very similar to QuickCoin, (http://www.quickcoin.co/) launched a year ago.

It's great to start getting "bits" more widely used. I explain to people that there are 1,000,000 bits in each bitcoin, so they understand the term.

It's funny how on the dogecoin sub-reddit there's posts bragging about how they have been doing it forever and the bitcoin users are finally catching on.

Me personally: I don't want to tip in dogecoin.

And I'm guessing a lot of other people don't either, which is probably why it never caught on as much as a bitcoin tipping application. Bitcoin is the #1 cryptocurrency so it would make sense that any popular app would catch much more adoption with it than other coins.

If you have a WordPress site or BBPress site, you can add tipping to it as well - it uses ChangeTip and Twitter to do so:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/tipmewp/ (https://wordpress.org/plugins/tipmewp/)

Anyone who posts on the WP or BBP site and has a twitter account entered can be tipped.

So what? Just keep at it.

Of course not everyone knows what it is.

But if every few months they see some money thrown their way, eventually they'll get curious and click to accept it.

I ignored bitcoin my first time too. Did you grasp it the first moment you saw it?

Yes, they have done well. I guess I'm just not interested in dogecoin. Nothing wrong with them. My interest just lies mainly with Bitcoin. So my hat's off to the doge community. May they continue to do their thing.

Now let's grow bitcoin's popularity!

Just sent 5 of my friends 1000 bits. 2 of them got excited and downloaded a PC wallet and are now researching Bitcoin. I think in the next few days/weeks buyers will be coming in (takes days to setup coinbase) watch the value go up. Who ever sold recently ... ouch

lol, agreed

it's a good idea though, it could go viral but feel the average facebook user would have no idea how to collect their tip.
for me is a long way from being the killer app we need, still too complicated for the average tard

plus, I wouldn't put it past zuckerberg to ban it just to hurt the winklevii if becomes pop.
I am sure zuckerberg just wants his own payment/tipping/token system

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, while this might help awareness, it does nothing to educate people about the importance of holding their own private keys and not leaving all the bits they've accumulated in the hands of a third party who could vanish at any point.  In fact, it downright encourages people to leave their money in the hands of a third party.  If you are using this to get new people involved, be sure to take the time to explain to them how to set up and back up their own wallets.

Might be an idea to have a schedule of donation suggestions on a daily basis. If enough people follow it, it would draw media attention and possibly raise some money for a few good causes. Like on veterans day, we could donate a few bits to a vets support fb page (hope there is an official one!).

Also, it would spread the word quicker because (presumably) people would be paying attention to 'veterans day pages' on vets day, and if they see people donating via changetip en masse they will want to join in.

Theres almost something on everyday, so there's no limit on targets. Just check Google home page too!

I think it's a great idea moving on the right direction because facebook is actually a power tool to reach out to new people especially those who have no idea what bitcoin is all about. I just tried out the service by sending 100 bits to two of my college facebook friends who accepted the tip and after trying out, they were giving positive feedback and were willing to try out further.

I can. Show them the benefits of using bitcoin, don't give it away for free.

If you give away something of value (in this case bitcoin) for free then the receiver will likely just sell it for fiat cash

unlikely they'd sign up to an exchange with all the id requirements needed just to cash out a small amount (assuming were taking about changetip amounts here).

If I give away 50 cents worth to 20 people there's a good chance that 4+ will become interested enough to start a wallet... especially if you explain the potential growth.... hell that's like two beers or shoveling my own driveway... money well spent.

would be interesting to see if it gains momentum and if the media pick it up, would certainly give BTC users a positive spin for once...

thats a pretty good idea, ill follow it, ppl always read the comments on facebook im sure they will ask them selfs, what is this tip thing all about.
pretty much all the fb pages listed above are high traffic pages so is a great targeting strategy.

I would avoid tipping on certain events if you get what i mean. Birthday of Nat Geo might be okay. It lifts up the mood and tipping is supposed to send a message of celebration. Not to sound too negative but some people might view it differently instead. For now my tip is only for friends i know.

So how does this work for Facebook?

I just sent a tip to my sister via Facebook for her birthday.

I check her wall and it doesn't show anything, on my ChangeTip page it shows "Out for delivery". Is it supposed to show up on the person's wall?

It will show up something like this

http://media.coindesk.com/2015/01/changetipfacebook1-630x383.jpg

On her changetip account, the btc amount would show up there as well. Nowadays fund transfer happen almost instantaneously.

Hmm, I saw that but do not see anything on her wall. I would say maybe she has something blocking people from sharing on her wall but I see other people posting on her wall and nothing shows up on my activity.

Smart move for changetip to gun for facebook. I expect wider adoption will progress for now. Maybe value will stabilize? Who knows? Good start for the year, leading up to the coming projects, i hope.

Pleeeaaase, if you are going to tip people:

1. Tip enough that they can actually buy something with the tip. Otherwise, it's just spam, and will probably annoy them more than anything.
2. Give them info on how to spend it! A link to the Wiki might suffice: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

If they think it's just a few cents of useless monopoly money, they won't even bother to claim it. On the other hand, if you make them understand they can go right ahead and order a Pizza with what you just gave them... That has actual merit.

Let me quote a ChangeTip detractor:

Quote
Tipping is a nuanced act that requires some social savvy, tact, and grace. Here are some quick tips to reduce the cringe factor associated with tipping strangers online:

Selfishness and tipping do not mix. Do not tip because you want something, such as increased exposure for Bitcoin. Do not tip someone to get something later. Tip only because you unconditionally want to give something nice to someone else.

Tip only when there is a service that was rendered that is of immediate benefit to you. Do not tip out of sympathy. Human emotions are not denominated in dollars or Bitcoins. No one wants to know that you feel $1 worth of sad.

The tip must be commensurate with the service performed and the utility received. No fractional pennies, in fact, no pennies at all. If you wouldn't pick it up off the floor, don't give it to someone else as a gift. A tip that has a low net present value is downright offensive.

And we live in the here and now. No one cares if you believe your measly one ten thousandth of a Bitcoin will be enough to go to the moon some day. Mark it to market.

Do not tip people who work out of love or passion. Do not tip people who are kind to you. Do not tip anyone just for being themselves, especially if they have lived through an adverse event or illness.

Do not tip people whose accomplishments dwarf yours. Keep in mind that when you're behind a made-up username, you look indistinguishable from the know-nothing-did-nothings and loquacious shills that crowd out social media; "anoncryptoman" is the equivalent of a Victorian street urchin -- do not tip from such an account to someone whose real-world identity is known.

Do not tip people who have dedicated their lives to what they believe is a higher purpose.

Do not tip government employees, accountants, military personnel, and financial officers, who need to keep their finances clean of conflicts of interest.

Do not tip judges, doctors, nurses, EMTs, cops, DAs, professors, construction workers, in fact, any professional of any kind outside the service sector.

Do not tip members of the Night's Watch.

And please, and I'm not making this up, do not tip Oprah! Or Bill Gates for that matter.

If you feel that the situation calls for a microtip, do it privately. In cultures with extensive tipping, you always slip the cash discreetly, often through a handshake. Remember, it's a selfless act, neither your ego nor your public perception ought to be involved, so there is no justification to do it publicly.

But overall, it is far better in most cases to organize a charity drive than to drive-by-drop a few penny shavings. These microtips have never made the world a better place, in the same way that those New-Agey emails about how someone once paid for someone else's toll on their commute never accomplished any lasting societal change for the better. As the New Age flakes like to say, not all who wander are lost -- but they sure get in the way of other people. Changing the world is difficult and requires concentrated action. Penny gifts are a dead-end distraction, an easy way to appease one's conscience and justify inaction.

Finally, some people trot out the argument that the online tipping mania is harmless. It's very much not, because the underlying motivations are all too clear and reflect on all of us. It's at best spammy. Tipping penny pieces to increase the value of one's Bitcoin holdings is duplicitous. And yes, even people who were "making it rain in the club" have actually been sued for throwing cash at people. Not everyone is hunting and hurting for dollars, and normal people would like to earn a living with dignity. Penny tipping violates social norms and makes the Bitcoin community look cringeworthy, which in turn is bad for Bitcoin.

(I definitely don't agree with all that, but it's still worth reading as it describes how you might appear to others, as a fanatic...)

dont really agree with that imo; tipping small amounts to showcase the potential of BTC i think is ok, and not really comparable to tipping in the real world - its not done for the amount actually tipped or the implied 'generosity' behind it, but just to showcase what can be done with the tech. At least i think it is for most users at this point in time, in the future when 'everyone' uses btc tipping systems (or similar) casually in every day life then it will be more analogous to tipping in the real world and the etiquette would be comparable. but for now i think were focused more on spreading adoption.

any halfway intelligent market/promo person (particularly involved with charities im thinking) who notices lots of people tipping organisations on fb or twitter will see the potential for 'viral fundraising' if they adopt it and look into getting it on board (regardless of how much people tip these days with it, they hopefully see the potential as a new means to raise funds).
and adoption spreads though these kinds of actions, when they see other people using BTC with changetip or whatever else, they are more likely to look into it for themselves - i cant think of a better way to get the average person into it than changetip/facebook (and i cant see how to get an organisations attention in a better way either: lots of people sending them money?!).

Now - im thinking more about people tipping organisations, not individuals tipping a few cents to each other randomly (regarding that much i can see what youre talking about more, so - maybe were coming at this from different angles). for individuals i agree its better to send something substantial and point them to somewhere they can use it.

also, i seriously doubt its going to cause a rally in price whichever way its used, i think anyone still holding out for the '2012/13 any tidbit of good news = price rally' is going to wait a long time to see that again. true, lots of other people will still tip trying to cause a rally but for me at least its just about spreading the good word for now - and for the get rich quick hopers, at least they are giving away their btc than cashing out...
i think big price rallys are only going to come through mass public adoption in new markets (which will come, but not through changetip!).

anyway, we probably have dfferent ideas of what CT can be good for :p but doing things with some social etiquette in mind is always good:)

Seems they have captured all of the social media and sites with their concept. I am yet to try tipping on FB , waiting for a good post to pop up .

out of the 5 tips I have sent out only one was Delivered 4 are still out for delivery  :-\

People have been trained not to click links they don't recognize or understand.

This is going to be the biggest hurdle to adoption.

Maybe they should allow a way to claim back the tips which haven't been accepted(But they probably won't as they benefit rom this).
Some one tipped Bill gates the other day on that bitcoin interview, and obviously he won't be accepting it, so its going to go to waste.
EDIT: They Do ! :) ,  Thanks to gjgjgj for bringing this to our attention: https://www.changetip.com/faq

That's actually a really good idea.  Someone should suggest it (politely) on the changetip reddit sub.  The guys involved in changetip don't seem to be the type to get greedy at this stage, so I don't think they'd say a blanket "no" to the suggestion at all.  In fact unclaimed tips are going to be a major problem (large quantity) in the future.  So its an issue that should be addressed early on.

I think may be a timer with an expiration, and the funds are put back into your account.   They collect fees only if the tip is collected.

Yes, showcasing the tech is a good point.

Well, I just love to tip on Reddit and I also use my personal Url --> http://Kprawn.tip.me in other forums, where it's not incorporated within their software yet.

I think the best thing to do, would be to make sure, you tip enough to make sure, they can buy something usefull with it. After you tipped someone, also include the following :

* You can spend money I just send you here : www.overstock.com / www.Dell.com etc.. etc.. {Include the link to a cool site, where she/he can spend the coins}

For people to accept a new currency or technology, is a big thing already.... make it easy for them and suggest some merchants accepting Bitcoin. The worst thing will be, when people accept the currency and they want to spend it, and the place where they want to spend it, does not accept BTC.

So make it FUN and easy for them .... ;-> Tipping someone 0.20 cents will not encourage them to use it.... Rather tip them $1 to $5 and more if you know them on their Birthday and make it worth it.

Remember, if they did not accept the tip, within a few days, it will be cancelled, and it will go back to your Changetip account. {So you have nothing to loose} ;D
