Title: Where art thou Moderator Malevolent? We miss you.
Post by: BitcoinDistributor on January 21, 2015, 08:52:47 AM
What happens when a mod takes a leave of absence from the forum ? Does he still get paid tips ? I would argue that wouldn't be fair to the others.

Our good friend and global moderator, Malevolent, has not visited this lovely forum in almost 3 weeks. Just curious as to what happens when mods just disappear, if theres like a warning timeframe or something before they lose their status.

A mod only gets paid by how active they are in moderating so if you're not handling reports or only a small percentage every month you won't get a share or at the most very little. I think mods who aren't active for long periods of time will at some point lose their status as I think a couple have fairly recently, but it's likely on a case by case basis. I'm sure you wouldn't lose your mod status if you decide to take a holiday or go travelling for a while as long as you told the admins about it beforehand, but a month or so isn't a biggie. I do think this is one of the reasons we need some more active global mods though.

I believe hilarious said they get paid proportionally to their activity/reports dealt with, so I wouldn't worry about unfair compensation. I would assume he notified the rest of the staff before taking a leave of absence. Even if he didn't, 3 weeks isn't that long, sometimes you just need take a break from the forums, not a big deal unless it lasts more than a month or two.

edit: Hilarious beat me by a minute, pretty much the same thing he said.

Yep. I remember when this was clarified (by theymos I believe) quite a while ago as there was quite a large Meta thread asking about the transactions to staff.

@hilariousandco: Wait, really? There have been demoted staff recently...? I haven't noticed...though I guess you wouldn't if they're inactive...only one I've noticed is John K. but that was a while ago.

Don't quote me on the exact reasons but I assume it was due to inactivity, though they could've requested to be removed or some other reason. Hazek is one I know of: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=5266

Huh. He doesn't seem inactive, it was probably self-requested. Thanks for the info.

He was a global moderator right? is that why Mitchell was made a staff member?

I kind of disagree, the first page of his post history goes back to April 2014. Obviously, few posts does not necessarily indicate inactivity, but it is a pretty good sign.

Oh! I didn't notice that. Yeah, I'll take that back then...

@JarvisTechnology: No, a local board mod stepped down and Mitchell took his spot.

20 posts since May is pretty inactive, but you could still have a very low forum presence and yet still actively moderate and handle reports. tysat has only made two posts since July but logs on regularly and handles some reports.

I'm not sure of his mod status but it had nothing to do with Mitchell becoming a Made Man  :D. He was made a mod of the Dutch section because the previous mod resigned.

Maybe you're confusing him with tysat, iirc he was a global mod before being a mod.

I don't think he was. I saw a couple of old threads of lists of bitcoin mods yesterday or the day before and he was never listed as a global (I tried searching for them but search is disabled).

Tysat was a global mod then got demoted to a regular mod? I remember a while back him saying he was just a patroller (but he's also a mod of a couple of subs).

Hazel was a local mod in Bitcoin Discussion and Economics.

Tysat was a global, he resigned and left for a while, then returned. He asked to be a mod again, was made a local mod in newbies and ?, then a patroller after that.

Mods do get removed for inactivity eventually, and some have. It's not good to do it too quickly though, people shouldn't feel obligated to be here, that leads to burnout.

Main bitcoin sub.

Hazek and jgarzik are still listed as mods on the Economics and Press sections btw.

Tysat is online now. He still handles some reports but doesn't seem to really post anymore.

Mods come, mods go. Rotation in a forum like this one is inevitable. If they won't be active, I'm sure some others will happily take their places :P

One reason why the internet is scary is the fact that you won't know what happened to your partner you were working on that project with, the guy you started a trade with, or the moderator that used to help out. I mean, what if he died? :-\
