Doesn't make sense for the average bitcoiner to run a node, unless they're already hosting servers, co-lo'ed, or have VPS they are already paying for. As for securing the network, there is plenty of computing power securing the network already. Everybody mining is securing the network, everyone running Bitcoin core is securing the network...Joe home PC user not running a node won't make an ounce of difference in the grand scheme of things. By running a full node you sort of improve the network and its utility making it worth more (if only slightly). That's what makes Bitcoin so interesting - it's not only a brick of gold, but something you can spend time on, it's interesting!

Apart from security here, at least you know that you are contributing back to the community to help maintain it.

They are securing network and generaly helping it plus making downloading blockchain files to other users faster.
