Title: Do people running full nodes gain anything?
Post by: SureLockLoans on January 21, 2015, 08:17:03 PM
I see a lot of people are eager to get their nodes up and running are they earning from this or are they trying to secure the network more?

I don't think you gain anything from running a full node but it does make the network transactions more secure.

Full nodes are a little more secure and private because they access the blockchain directly.

You won't earn anything from running a full node, but you could help make the bitcoin network more secure.
This coindesk article should be a good read for you. http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-nodes-need/ :)

If you run the core 24/7 then you will not have to wait the sync process every time you want spend your money

Just the gratitude of the whole btc community, you make the network what it is

It`s a way how to support bitcoin to be more secure. I do not think there is any earning from running it.

you can gain something if you are part of the tor node, but the reward is very low

Nothing but security.

No.

There are some (just a few working now) bitcoin nodes running on Tor. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Fallback_Nodes#Tor_nodes

It just makes the network more strong, wish it was POS all these years running it as full node.  :-\

You contribute to the future of money history.
Quite a nice reward in itself, no? ;)

If you run the core 24/7 then you will not have to wait the sync process every time you want spend your money

Neither you do when using a lightweight client. The real benefit of running the core client is securing the network, as others have already said.

You can run Electrum or something and do not wait.
The thing is the safest way if you are paranoid, I think, to store your Bitcoin (and dont want to go 100% offline) is Bitcoin-qt because you know you have an up to date blockchain locally.

They gain nothing, it's only for fun and to stengthen the Bitcoin network

Nada, zilch, no dinero, nothing.   NO gain whatsover.

Doesn't make sense for the average bitcoiner to run a node, unless they're already hosting servers, co-lo'ed, or have VPS they are already paying for.

As for securing the network, there is plenty of computing power securing the network already.  Everybody mining is securing the network, everyone running Bitcoin core is securing the network...Joe home PC user not running a node won't make an ounce of difference in the grand scheme of things.

People running nodes do not earn anything, they are securing the Bitcoin network.

But,if you run a node for electrum server, you can ask for donations/tips in the console which users can see.

but if you use a lightweight client you will have to trust other people about the blockchain

Yes, that's why I don't see “will not have to wait” as THE benefit of running the full node.

It's more a way of supporting a project you like and making it better. By running a full node you sort of improve the network and its utility making it worth more (if only slightly). That's what makes Bitcoin so interesting - it's not only a brick of gold, but something you can spend time on, it's interesting!

If you use Armory, you can also see that it needs the whole blockchain so you can run the node and armory as well. Apart from security here, at least you know that you are contributing back to the community to help maintain it.

It helps the network. which if you enjoy bitcoin you might enjoy doing.

This is something they do to secure the network.
Nothing like supporting a project you admire.  :)

They are securing network and generaly helping it plus making downloading blockchain files to other users faster. No nodes in bitcoin aren't paid but few altcoins made it possible.

I am running full node, am proud that I am contributing my tiny bit to Bitcoin.  It is not as slow if your Bitcoin is running daily.

May I ask how you run it? On your pc or vps?

I think I will leave my Bitcoin Core wallet open for as long as my pc is open, just to help.

Like lots of people say you do not gain anything but it helps the bitcoin network and it's easy to run of your everyday computer.

As a side note, there are now less than 6500 bitcoin full nodes in the world and the majority are located in US and western Europe. https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/
The number is pretty low, considering the size, value and importance of the bitcoin project.

I'm from the Philippines and it's shocking to know that there are only 3 of us running full nodes across the country. :o
