Title: MAKE IT EASIER FOR NEWBIES TO KNOW THE RULES ABOUT POSTING
Post by: twitterchase on July 15, 2012, 08:08:05 PM
OMG I am so frustrated. It took me a whole hour to realise this was the only place I could post. I only joined this board to message a specific member a question and you made it so hard for me to do that lol. Its all good now.  ;)

To be honest, I did have difficulty finding out that I needed 5 posts here. Could do with a global sticky instead of just the Newbie section because normally I wouldn't come to this section.

I remember reading the rules but i forgot between the time of signing up and wanting to reply to a post. Took me a good few mins to work out why there was no reply on the post page lol

Yes i do have a memory like a goldfish!

Many forums have the newbie section at the top of the home page.
It would be handy here as we need to go there first.
Maybe add "You must post here first" to the description as well.

This and any/all above suggestions. I've lurked bitcointalk forums for awhile, and only after I bought something from /goods and asked + googled how to post on bitcointalk, did I learn about the newbie forum.

How much easier could it get with a sticky in the newbies section:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=15958.0
When you sign up for the forums as well it tells you that you will be restricted to the Newbie section for 4 hours of log in time and I believe 5 posts.

meh, lets not start a noobie conundrum. afterall, being a noobie on a forum doesn't make you any less of a person ;)

what about make a completely separate website called newbietalk.org and then make bitcointalk.org invite-only.

to get an invite, you have to be a member of newbietalk.org with 4 hours logged and 5 posts to your name.

so it's basically the same set up, but with a separate domain.

just a stupid brain-fart.

I think the best is to find a way for the registration page to punch future users right in the eyes. Maybe that'll make them read what they just agreed upon before clicking the Submit button...

Maybe changing "Register" to "Sign In Blood" or something, might draw the eye back to the T&Cs.

or at least not in white font
If "sign in blood" sounds a bit too emo,
Try "Accept Rape"

You ticked a box that tells you you're limited here until you fulfil the posting and time requirements.

I realized i couldn't post somewhere, went to the newbie section to see if there already has been some "newb" with the same problem, saw the "Newbie restriction" post and got clarification.
Pretty good system, couldn't remeber that on my first account.

It's hard to see how you could make it much easier than that. If people don't even read what's in front of their face...

Maybe you could make a quiz that people have to pass before they can join - just covering a few basic things to make sure people have actually read the important bits. But people might find this pretty obnoxious. I'm not sure what else to do. If the information is already put right in front of people and still they don't read it, the next step would be to force them to read it in some way.

It was the same for me. There are many ways to do this without annoying those that are not newbies. The could detect who is a newbie and then display a pop up or message in the header that explains this policy

Really? You're complaining? Posting here was one of the few things they asked of you. They stated to post here first clearly on the page you agreed to follow. This is my first post, and the section only took me a few seconds to find after reading to post here on the agreement page. Anyway, welcome to the forums.

This is exactly what happens. You sign up and right away it details the exact restrictions you're under and how you can lift them.

Of course it's easier to press the "LOLDIDNTREAD" button and then complain that the system should behave in a certain way while it behaves in exactly that way.

Excellent! Put a important message where no one looks for it...

Have someone read first pages of Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, by the way...

Dude, when you registered you had to check a box saying you were aware of the posting restrictions.
You don't find stuff even when it is put in front of your face, imagine finding a sticky on the Newbie section... ::)

Well that's your definition on "right in front of". However, mate, when I came to this forum for me first time (by a Google link), it was to reply on someth' that I found interesting. Unable to reply on that post I checked the general and the technical forum for info. And I browsed the help. Those were the logical options from a point of someone who didn't know where to look.

So. The first pages of Hitch hiker describes the information situation on this matter pretty well.

I wouldn't even have signed up for this forum if I didn't need to talk to burnside about a problem with my account on LTC.kattare.com. This seems to be the only way to contact him from what I've come across. Oh well another post and then 3.5 hours and I might finally be able to ask a question.

At least you managed to read half of it, which is more than usual, as you can see by this thread and the ones like it.
