Title: Sent 20 BTC by mistake. Please help.
Post by: Roberto.4 on January 27, 2015, 05:04:10 PM
Last night I have sent out 20 BTC by mistake. How do I revert/cancel the transaction ?

https://blockchain.info/tx/67276898e3757b0c214af1e535dfcbbd3550636892408f7301831650cc06a605

Update: Thanks to the forum members, I found a way to contact the address owner. Now, I have asked for a refund - http://forum.cloudmining.website/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=42. Surprisingly, it took one minute for me to send the coins to them and even after 24 hour is over, they are asking 24 hours more to take the decission to return my coins !!!

Unfortunately, it is not possible to revert Bitcoin transaction. Mind to explain what "mistake" did you do last night? Missclick? The 20 BTC was sent to another address just 7 second after receiving it. https://blockchain.info/address/19wN6jYvQSkW2acaSZXBavYAfde31YJrYJ

What do you mean by 'mistake'? Did you send to wrong address, or have you entered wrong amount by mistake?

You need control over the place you sent it, where have you sent the funds? they need to send it back.

I was a bit drunk yesterday. I was trying to purchase 20 Giga Hash (2x10Ghs) hash power. By mistake I selected 20 Tera Hash (2x10Ths) from the drop down and clicked the link and it was gone. My friends told me this is the biggest bitcoin support forum. So if I tell my problem here, they can return my transaction.

Where did you get the address from?

You can't cancel Bitcoin transactions. Unfortunately it's very likely the money is gone. You need to find out whoever you sent it to and ask if they will send it back.

I have a feeling this is a troll.

Guy is buying thousands of dollars of advanced mining hardware and doesn't even know some of the basic functions of the bitcoin protocol. Nah.

Damn , that really sucks mate . That's why I don't drink.
From what company did you bought the hash power? your last hope is trying to contact them and ask for a refund else then that .. you can't do anything unfortuntly because transaction in Bitcoin are not reversable.

As long as you haven't sent to the incorrect/unknowns address, there's a chance that merchant will refund you the bitcoins. Unless you bought on one of the cloudmining ponzis, then they may not be keen to refund.

Just contact the support and/or write in the official thread of the site you purchased from

It's not wrong address issue, but the wrong amount. He probably knows who did he send those bitcoins to (unless really drunk).

Or consider as the most  expensive drink and digest it. You should contact the customer support and ask if they can send it back.

Ouch! I'd recommend setting the password on your wallet to something you won't be able to type drunk.

Maybe there is a market for a breathalizer activated hard wallet.

To the OP.  Bitcoin is like cash.  It would be like going into a store planning on buying a $1 TV and you bought a $10K TV in cash.  There is no way to "reverse" cash.  Your only solution is to talk to the company you sent the funds to.  If they agree to send the funds back and cancel/modify the order then you are fine (no different than cash).  If they don't well that is a problem (once again no different than cash).

I am a bit confused with so many replies. Forum is not allowing me to post fast !!! What I understand is I need to contact the merchant. I bought it from Cloud Mining Website. How do I contact them ? I tried to send 0.02 BTC, whereas 20 BTC has gone from me. I can not afford this loss. Need to get it back at any cost. In PayPal, CreditCard there is an option to revert a transaction. Why dont we have it in Bitcoin ?

How did you have 20 bitcoins to lose if you didn't know bitcoin transactions weren't refundable?

Lesson learned, don't keep that much in a hot wallet, store it in a cold storage wallet you need to be sober to use.

Because Bitcoin isn't like those services, it's digital cash.

what was the exact website you sent it to? post it here and we will help you find the contact details.

Yes, you will need to contact the merchant and ask for a refund. That is the only way. Hopefully, they are a legit company.

you could try to contact the merchant and talk with him...
you can explain him how it went...
and you can try to offer him a little small reward if he will return to you 20 bitcoin.

if he is honest will accept without thinking about it 2 times!!!

but i'm not so sure!!!

Maybe if you can tell us which of the many cloud mining websites (of which the majority are ponzi scams) you visited and we could give you a hint.

I tried to send 0.02 BTC, whereas 20 BTC has gone from me. I can not afford this loss.

You are now at the mercy of the person that received it.

Need to get it back at any cost. In PayPal, CreditCard there is an option to revert a transaction. Why dont we have it in Bitcoin ?

Because thats how cash works. Bitcoin would not be bitcoin if it would just copy an existing certralized service. Please do not take this the wrong way, but: you should have read more about it before you aquired 20 BTC you can not afford to lose.

As I said, the company is Cloud Mining Website. Their website is www.cloudmining.website. They do not have a place to type the amount. Then I would not have been trapped like this. They have 2 drop down. One from 1-9 another from 10 Ghs to 10 Ths. As far as I can remember, I selected 2 correctly, but instead of 10 Ghs, I selected 10 Ths before clicking on order button. Hence the current problem.

From 1/ponzi I rate them ponzi, good luck anyway. I might be wrong.

People need to realise that Bitcoin is not a centralised system and there is no 'company' you can complain to if something goes wrong, the only thing you can do is ask this cloud mining website if they'll reverse the transaction. As others have said though, I find it pretty suspicious that you were playing around with 20btc and made that kind of mistake and you would so willingly dump that much money into something where you have to have some responsibility for your actions when using it and is worth far more than paper money?

I hope you aren't one of those people that was fooled into thinking that Bitcoin is a company and it's magic internet money and is completely worthless which is what news journalists and morons alike have been parroting for years. You can certainly get help with stuff here and lots and lots of information, but Bitcoin is decentralised you won't get your money back unless the person who got it happens to be nice.

Clicking this order button creates, signs, and sends a bitcoin transaction away without any further interaction from you? I would start looking for a more secure Bitcoin client if that is the case.

If thats actually the case (I doubt it) the wallet software is not compliant with bip21:

Quote
Bitcoin clients MUST NOT act on URIs without getting the user's authorization. They SHOULD require the user to manually approve each payment individually, though in some cases they MAY allow the user to automatically make this decision.

There should be a BIG alert before every transaction to double check the amount you are selling, along with beign forced to put a small 4 digit number password (like a pin) for every transaction, so you double check you arent fucking it up.

I am not sure what you are discussing here. I am not a technically sound person. So I do not understand all of it. Some people told me Bitcoin is a Ponzi. But, my friends said no. Hence they suggested me to buy bitcoin as much as I can, because they are saying the price will rise. Price has gone up, but unfortunately the coins are out of my hand now !!! I was given a linked address after placing the order. I thought everything is fine. So whatever came next I clicked yes. In morning today, I found the blunder I did. That was all my money. Thank you everyone for providing information about Cloud Mining Website. I will be posting in their announcement thread soon with my account details and refund address. It would be good if the forum allowed me to post faster.

Looks like they're considering refunding the OP:

Quote
Assuming you do not want to start mining with 20 Ths, I am de-activating your order now. It might take some time to let you know about the management decision regarding this issue.

But since it's very likely a ponzi, rated 7/7 in Puppet's thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=878387.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=878387.0) (see 'Ticking timebombs' part)

they will be delaying 'decision' until it all collapse.

Very small chances OP will get a single satoshi back. Hope I'm wrong.

Why doesn't it happen to me? I wish some wino would send me 20 BTC by mistake. Then I'll tell him I was drunk too, and that I made another mistake, gambling it all, and that it's all gone now...

Lol, yeah I wish too. If Bitcoin ever does get used more and more in Casinos, Sports Betting, Strip clubs etc, I can honestly see a need for a  breathalyzer wallet app.

Over 24 hours ago poor chap sent them 20 BTC and now he is being told that they haven't started mining yet.
This is scam and I really feel for him.

This is hardly believeable.  OP knows about blockchain.info and has 20 BTC or more but doesn't know that bitcoin transactions aren't reversible?  From the FAQ on blockchain.info:

https://blockchain.info/wallet/bitcoin-faq
Quote
What is a Bitcoin address?

A Bitcoin address is a unique identifier which allows you to receive Bitcoins. With PayPal you send funds to an email address, and similarly with Bitcoin you send funds to a Bitcoin address. For example, this is one of our Bitcoin addresses:  1JArS6jzE3AJ9sZ3aFij1BmTcpFGgN86hA

Please verify that you have copied the destination address exactly before sending Bitcoins to it.   Bitcoin transactions are not reversible!

I agree that the lack of contact info is a red flag, protected WHOIS info isn't necessarily a sign of something bad. I add privacy

I do that too. The problem I had is there were no contact details whatsoever, none on the WHOIS, none on the website, which is a big red flag.

You can't cancel the transaction
If you know the recipient, you can appeal to his or her goodwill

bitcoin transactions can't be reversed, when it sent then it means its actually sent and can't be refunded
the only option is ask the receiver to send it back to you if you know that person

btw you entered wrong address while sending the money or payment amount was misstyped

I will take my chances and says he didn't , since the CloudMining.website  user didn't login since 26 January => https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=379594 , So unless they answered him on their website I guess he didn't sort it out .

His order is real, Cloud Mining Company acknowledged his refund request:

But, as Kotwica666 mentioned above, it might be just PR stunt pulled by CMC themselves.

Ok. I think I understand your problem. You must have a credit card linked to your cloudmining account. As you tried to make payment, you accidentally selected another premium option which requires you to pay more. Hence the funds amount to 20btc which get sourced from your credit card. You have two way. Immediately call up the website and told them you want to cancel as it was not your intention to get the package. Or, get advice from your credit card company on how to proceed further with this. I'm sorry this happened to you.

As I said, my friends told me the price will rise and hence I bought the coins. One of my roomie knew a local guy who sell bitcoin at lower than market rate. We went to his place, handed over the cash and within one hour the coins came to my address.

Now, the problem is price went up and now it is falling down. All my friends want me to sell the coins as we had a condition on 20 BTC. If we make profit on 20 BTC, we will share that and if we lose, we will share that as well. They could not pay at that time as they did not have the money. Now, the coins are out of my hand and they think I have sold the coins without telling them. As I can see, you are a member of Bitcoin Foundation. I'm afraid they will be of no use. The role of the Bitcoin Foundation is often misunderstood. That org tries to lobby against over regulation and influence public policy. But it has no more authority over bitcoin than you do. There is nothing anyone can do to reverse a transaction. Transactions are strictly one way. Your only option is to try to find out who owns the address they were sent to and ask them to send the BTC back.

I just saw that you edited your thread, glad that they answered you . Let us know and keep us updated with how things does. You still may have chance to get your bitcoins refunded ...
Still ..; some people are saying that your Bitcoins have been obtained from Bitsmap hack ... If it's true then you may not get refunded at all.
So I will ask you straight , did you got your 20BTC from Bitsmap hack ?

These coins have come through mixer before reaching out this address. It seems, the person from which he bought coins at lower price mixed his coins through mixer and hence he received those coins. Details: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=939199.msg10292903#msg10292903

So the guy he bought the coins from is the Bitstamp hacker?

No. He might be another scammer, drug seller/addict or just mixing his coins for anonymity. His coins are now in mixer reserve and OP has been paid from mixer's own reserve, where bitspamp hacked coins were residing. This is how it works: https://bitmixer.io/how.html

wow, I guess apologies are in order for OP.

really though man, get a handle on btc before mucking around with it. You have learned how easy it is to lose your coins, you may not realize how rare a thing it is for those coins to be returned. You are really lucky!

Also, cloudmining, any cloudmining company, they rarely make ROI, almost never. You really should do a little more research before you dabble in this shit. you got lucky today, tomorrow you may not be so lucky.
AND...
Don't drink and BTC!

That was really surprising.

But since they couldn't send it back when "mining"  started,

doesn't that make them seem more of a ponzi?

Where did you get your coins from, it looks like they went through a mixer and a really long chain of sketchy transactions.

It may sound tin foil hatty but I am pretty sure something else is going on here, seems like a PR stunt for someone.

These coins originate from the Bitstamp hack.

IF they're totally legit, doesn't it make sense not to refund if what you bought isn't brand new anymore? It's pretty much the same policy as regular stores, you use it, you bought it. If it's new (never been used), it's returnable.
