That way, each image appears in full size once in the original post, then in miniature in each post that quotes the original. That would eliminate walls of giant repeated images.

Good idea, with a "click to enlarge" feature if you want to revert them. If you are on mobile, pictures take a lot of the thread space, making them hard to read. Maybe thumbnail size, then you double click on them to make them full size. There could also be a setting that would make them full size all the time, just in case some people like full size pictures.

This reduces a lot of the "ugh what size should I make my image, don't want to break tables but some people may want to see details you can't see at lower resolution". I think it is better to display all BBcodes and their details when they click 'help' or something other in a popup window or similar thing to what Badbear suggested for the image. People won't set the size manually, and if they do, they'll probably get the aspect ratio wrong. It's annoying how gifs auto play. Even though I have a relatively fast connection large quotes that contain images, and especially large gifs cause page loading to be problematic.
