Title: What should I build for my next Hackathon?
Post by: nahtnam on February 01, 2015, 09:26:49 PM
Hey!

A hackathon is coming up, and I was wondering what I should build.

I want it to be something open source so that everyone can benefit from it.

Please let me know if you have some ideas you would like implemented!

Thanks.

I was thinking of making a blockchain style web hosting system where the source code of the site is distributed to all of the nodes, but I think its too complicated to make in 24 hours.

Try the reverse of BitPay, i.e. accept FIAT and Pay in Bitcoin. It would be very handy for merchants across the globe.

I cant really make that open source though.

Open source or closed... this will be a killer app.

That's a very great idea...  but I think it will be very difficult to make it due to the "volatility of the bitcoin price".

I agree, but for this hackathon, I want to make something open.

There is also the issue of chargebacks.

Hmmm... yeah you're right. It will be "impossible" to make it...

Which company do you work for?

Or is this a hackathon among friends?

Knowing who's conducting the hackathon helps me determine what solution might be deemed most inspirational by them...

Its a high school students only hackathon done at the paypal headquarters. (Note: Paypal is not actually going to judge, it will be judged by volunteers).

There is an opportunity behind every difficulty...

Ripple has tried it. Coinbase has partially done it.

Is this for the Texas Bitcoin Conference coming up here where the hackathon's prize is $1 million? Or, what is going on here? OP hasn't made it clear yet.

I have some ideas at jnxt.org, I write for nxt but some could be useful on bitcoin. Something like network visualization, transaction notification, or something else.

YYYYEEESSSSS! This could come in handy right now with the FORK debate being presented today:

Maybe even allow people to "weight" their own votes based on others' votes? Okay, so that v.2

Here are a couple for you:

Ratings system similar to ebay:

http://www.coindesk.com/bonafide-raises-850k-build-reputation-system-bitcoin/

And if it's not done well yet, maybe peer to peer lending combined with peer to peer ratings.

Fractionalize you're Bitcoin all you want, but it's 100% your risk if the borrower doesn't pay back.
