Title: Do you use IRC? (why or why not?)
Post by: Tsquared on February 02, 2015, 12:54:10 PM
Several of my acquaintances use IRC and are on IRC constantly. Many people I know use it very little, and when they do it's a "support chat" and they don't actually know it's IRC. Most of the people I know don't know what IRC is.

Wondering what others think. Do you use it? If so why?

Do you know about IRC and choose not to use it? Why not?

Have no idea what I'm talking about? That's okay too.

reason: i'm too lazy to install it and verify if the claims that it is not dead are true or false

I use it whenever necessary (contacting support and what have you) but not for recreational use. I miss the old IRC days, may start using it again. :)

I use it when I need to contact someone on support, some sites still use IRC as their support channel but other than that I don't ever use it.

there is a channel for any project, distribution, filesystem, or topic you might need to consult someone on. I don't read them all the time but its invaluable resource when an idea or question pops in your head.

funny this came up.
I was thinking of installing it again just to check out some channels.
I usually hung out in the wild west efnet. Either the channel @'s were afk/bots or power trippers with their cliq.
Never had much reason to check out the other networks at that time.
Only 1 person I personally know uses it, it's too complicated for the rest.

I'm no pro by any means, but I don't think it's necessary to install anything. I access the Digitalcoin IRC channel through a webpage.

https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#digitalcoin

I fall into the "once in a while" camp.

no it isn't but I enjoy the features of a full client. the web client is fine for once in a while or those who don't keep lots of tabs open.

Hell yes, IRC is wonderful.  You can run it in a terminal environemnt so it's perfect for debugging your shit if your desktop environment is down.

Yes, I understand there's functionality like that available within IRC, but I've only used it for chatting.

Haha, I mean that you can use IRC to jump into a room on freenode where someone can help you debug.  It's great to have a chat program that doesn't rely on the graphical environment, imo.

Shows you how much I know :)

But I do remember one of the guys using some kind of "bot" when he was compiling a wallet. Maybe that was just for notifications though, to let him know when the compiler finished or failed.

There does seem to be some functionality that can be achieved through scripting though, and some of the stuff I've seen done seems very interesting.

IRC in this day and age is more like hipster way of communicate. Only true nerd and geeks use it on daily basis. Do not get me wrong it is a really good thing to do and I encourage people to test other ways of communication. But  for normal users IRC setup and use is a little complicated and you got really not any perks of using IRC whatsoever.

I regularly keep an IRC client connected to Freenode.

-I can auth with Gribble and Assbot, and know that my words are backed by a PGP key

-I can check price and stock tickers

-I can develop relationships with traders (what, you think Casascius coins only get sold on this forum?)

-I can discuss happenings in Bitcoin in a real-time-esque fashion with other intelligent people

(EDIT: I'd used EFNet from about 1994-2003 or so, took a break until around summer 2013 before joining Freenode)

You must be one of those folks who never found himself looking at a busted xwindows environment after apt-get upgrade failed somewhere in dpkg -configure and you really needed to talk to #debian on freenode without having to start a graphical desktop.

I get it. Crypto users tends to be geeks or highly technical aware dudes. So they like to use something complicated and not mainstream as IRC is...

IRC is a protocol for text chats. There are many servers using this protocol. Most Bitcoin related channels (IRC chats are called channels) are on the Freenode network. Join  here (https://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-otc)

I've used it now and then when new coins have come to life. I remember being in the dogecoin irc chat when it was released and mining a hefty 20k coins per block on my laptop. ^^

Many years ago, IRC was hugely popular. It was the first real time chat. In fact, I think the term "real time chat" didn't even exist before IRC.

Good system for group chat, but it doesn't seem to have evolved while other chat protocols and services have.

Is IRC still alive? Seriously? ???

It is, and actually pretty popular amongst some die hards. This is the purpose of this thread/poll. Some of my associates are very passionate about IRC, and to their credit they seem to use it well and they have fun with it. I personally don't like using it, and I wanted to see if I was the odd one or if they were.

What I have trouble with is that they seem to want to encourage folks to join the IRC channel of the coin we support, while disregarding the crypto forums (including our own), which I view as a mistake. Based on the comments here and the poll votes, it would seem much more productive promoting a coin on the forums instead of on an IRC channel.
