On the most forums/ comments etc they'll be truncated, with only one/ left. Not here. Just look at this post. Leading / trailing whitespace could be truncated because it's not spacing anything... Whitespace anywhere else could be functional. Either way, it seems 99.9% percent of the members do not add useless leading / trailing whitespace to posts so I'd say it's a non issue.
