Title: Donation needed to fight Internet censorship[We're on thenextweb!]
Post by: 3kP0mR on July 24, 2012, 01:01:44 AM
Great News! We're on thenextweb. Sina even censors its own posts on Weibo microblogging service (http://thenextweb.com/asia/2012/09/04/sina-censors-posts-weibo-microblog/)

Greatfire.org is dedicated to Bringing Transparency To The Great Firewall Of China.
We are monitoring 42073 URLs. You can test all sorts of censorship in real time on our website and they would be automatically tested repeatedly.

Our English version of this site https://en.greatfire.org has a PageRank of 5 and our Chinese version https://zh.greatfire.org was recently blocked by Chinese authority along with our server IP.

We just developed another service to unblock website in China. Check it out. https://unblock.cn.com

And we are in need of Logo. If you can't donate BTC, please consider designing a logo for us. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=98991.0

We're looking for a total of 300BTC donation to
add testing servers    increase testing frequency
expand censorship testing to other country such as Iran, Pakistan, or even Great Britain (piratebay)
add hosting servers   buy different IP addresses & mirror domains
advertise our website

Please donate BTC to help us. Any amount welcome.
Donation address 1LTuHsWzSa7LovoWt8yBAQv2CSpB4PEao2  (as can be verified on https://en.greatfire.org/faq )

We hereby thank you in advance

For such a noble cause, and with a claimed high page rank, your donation address has zero transactions.  I will not be donating any coins here.

I only posted this BTC address yesterday because our Chinese version is blocked. We have not asked for any donation before yesterday.
As for the pagerank, you could easily verify them by yourself. I also added media coverage to show it's not a fake page rank

Ok.  It looks a bit odd and there are many people that come fishing for funds here.

You might take some precious 2 minutes to actually use our website to see if we could do what we claim

google.com and all search results through it is 100% blocked.

Where did you get that info? For example, "hello" is not blocked. https://en.greatfire.org/www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Dhello

https://en.greatfire.org/keywords  This only shows blocked keywords.

Actually, I have another more credible account in this forum. However, I don't want to link it in any way as Chinese authority might track it back to my real identity.

If that's really your site, change the "FAQ" anchor text at the bottom to "F.A.Q."

Erm by using your site search bar: google.com , it then shows google search results all being blocked in recent days.

If that's really your site, change the "FAQ" anchor text at the bottom to "F.A.Q."

The BTC address in the OP is listed on the FAQ page.

Doesn't prove that the poster owns the site, but does suggest that your donations are going there.

For the first page, yes. You could visit the 3rd, 4th page and discover some are not blocked

I've changed the FAQ to F.A.Q It's cached though and will not show up immediately.
The change has taken effect. See the lower left corner of the index(https://en.greatfire.org/)

Why is this in lending? Will you pay back the donors?

Sorry. Donation means your BTC won't be paid back.
Your pay back would be more internet freedom we fight for.

I also posted the thread in project but admin collapsed them and I move it back to lending.

Just to know, in China, can you use google in https mode?. Do you have end-to-end encryption or the govt firewall decrypts, filters and re encrypt?. That's a question that's killing me.

https://www.google.com slow
https://www.google.com.hk normal
https://encrypted.google.com blocked

If you use https, government firewall cannot decrypt your data(they can block you altogether though), as this is the very nature of secure transport layer.

You have post a Chinese post in the Chinese sub forum. Please delete it yourself. It's bad for the bitcoin movement in China. The GFW will detect that post, and then 98% people in China who don't know about dealing with GFW will not be able to visit and join this community. You are doing very bad things for the bitcoin.

I'm a anti-gfw fan myself. I know that the post you made there is not write by yourself. you just copy from some where else.

Please delete that post. you don't even want to use your the other frequently used ID, which is to protect your identity. I urge you to protect this bitcoin community forum as you protect yourself.

This post is totally irrelevant and bad for the bitcoin movement. the GFW will ban this forum if you keep posting things like this. You damage the bitcoin movement in China, you damage the long term fund raising ability for all the libertarians in China.

Just delete the Chinese anti-GFW post and do your job in English. protect the possibility for the average Chinese people to visit this forum.

I've removed the content for now. However,I don't think it's a good idea to impose self censorship when you have the freedom to say the truth which is protected by Chinese Constitution. It's even worse than the case where one is forcefully silent by an external force.

I noticed that you use the word "protect" many a time, which practically means don't say any thing the Chinese Gov. doesn't like. It's pitiful that netizen can't post freely on Chinese forum. But even to do so when you are free of that restriction and continue to keep silent is the worst decision ever. You are not believing that one hand has four fingers and five fingers simultaneously right?

There are other technologies that can be used for people to speak without self-censorship without fear of retaliation, like Freenet (http://freesocial.draketo.de/).

That's not what we're talking about. I post a thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=104643.0) on Internet circumvention in the Chinese section to help Chinese have better access to Internet including many bitcoin related websites. HorseRider asked me to remove this thread because he fears that Great Firewall of China will block this forum. So he rationalized his decision to self censor himself and asked me to do the same even though the external Gov. force is not present.

PS: Freenet is subjected to throttling in China. I just tested it on our system. Here's the result https://en.greatfire.org/freesocial.draketo.de

Fang Bin Xing, who was the lead developer of the Great fire wall, recently is ill. Rumors say that he has a cancer.

 ;D

Lots of the internet users in China are happy about this news and curse him to have a death soon.
