What makes Neos different?  Why should I choose it over another?

This is question I was asked recently by someone and I thought maybe it would be best to address it here so that newcomers and veterans alike could be answered officially.  Quite simply put, you shouldn't choose Neos over another project but rather consider it as an addition.  There are many projects within the crypto space that have immense talent behind them and great teams of dedicated people.  Crypto isn't (to me) about which is better than the next. It's about how we as a community can enhance, improve and strengthen crypto.

With the aforementioned being said, what makes Neos different in the most fundamental way is our lack of creative boundaries and our willingness to go explore.  Consistently building Neos and supporting it from the first day of launch is something we're known for and very proud of.  The relationship we have with our incredible community allows us to receive feedback on a daily basis and materialize what were once only suggestions or ideas.  As I've been known to say many times before this - we love crypto and believe wholeheartedly in it.  We're here full-time, working on Neos and Neos alone.  If something isn't working for you, just let me know and I'll make sure it's taken care of.

The focus with this release and moving forward is ease-of-use/user-friendliness.  Development starting instantly will be on the second portion of what's coming in 2.1 (the next release) which will contain all of our security mechanisms and a few other features that are a bit complex and not ready for production yet entirely.

Some key features of Neos

In-wallet trading - One-click withdrawal and deposit, order history, buy and sell Neos at supported exchanges

Configurable settings & much more come see for yourself

Changelog

These are some of the changes I noted along the way of development for those interested between 2.0.1 and 2.0.2:

  • Grand total of all your Neos displayed gathered from exchange balances and your local wallet balance
  • Fixed twitter time on the dashboard
  • Removed ccex from neos (also be sure in the default.wallet.conf for all systems ccexAPI is removed)
  • Decreased timeout values on initial connection and transfer timeout for exchanges which were previously causing the wallet to hang due to waiting if an exchange was down.
  • Exchanges are enabled by default, but can be disabled in settings based on preference if you don't wish to view that exchange's stats/info.
  • Fixed sending functions so that if in the event the wallet is locked and a send was attempted without unlocking first it didn't attempt to initiate a send regardless
  • Fixed sending functions to disable the send function unless all required criteria was met (spendable amount, proper destination, unlocked wallet)
  • Transactions can now be exported to an excel spreadsheet, csv file, or json file.
  • On alias registration, the registration function is disabled if the wallet is locked, until the passphrase is entered correctly whereas before it would just cause an error.
  • Added address validation (works for neos aliases as well) to prevent possibly adding an invalid address to your personal address book
  • Added search/sort/delete ability for your personal address book
  • Lowered alias registration fee from 15 NEOS to 10
  • New feature 'bulk address generation' - generate multiple receiving addresses on-the-fly
  • Neos tools area:

a) Address validation tool
b) Private key import
c) more to come after launch via in-wallet updates

  • Password dialog disappears after entering in the correct phrase for sending instead of lingering
  • Added in a maximum character countdown while sending a message to avoid incomplete/partial message sending
  • Added unconfirmed funds to the balance bar on hover
  • Added support for multiple recipients
  • Modified the worth/balance verification scripts to support multiple txs
  • Updated all files referencing arbitrush
  • Removed legacy information from the stats page (algo stats, etc.)
  • Fixed typo in dropdown class for currency selection (the proper style now applies and looks much better)
  • Added network hashrate to the dashboard
  • Changed 'SHA 256' on the pools page to read "neos-sha.kickasspools.net"
  • Added ability to set custom timezone in settings
  • Automatic backups of your wallet and neos data (address book, aliases, messages, etc.) are now done every 24 hours
  • Added message/clarification regarding the Bittrex 0.2 NEOS withdrawal fee as it was causing confusion for some
  • Added in neos multipool stats and personal stats into the pools section
  • Styled all tables in a more attractive fashion and also more legible via highlight on hover
  • Added in-wallet updates - one-click and your Neos wallet is updated.  If a new feature is added or updated, or a bug is fixed, you will be notified in your Neos Inbox and then can update right from within the wallet without restarting the interface.
  • Changed personal history and market history from 20 records back to 50
  • Polling now handled by one main controller instead of several.  performance enhancement.
  • Removed some old lingering files from previous releases of Neos that are no longer necessary
  • Fixed order book sorting on bleutrade
  • Changed order book depth from 20 to 50
  • PHP renamed to neosphp to avoid confusion
  • neos control script updated for linux
  • Upgraded php to latest 5.4.37 to address security updates
  • Upgraded the core wallet to address using TLS over SSLv3, rpckeepalive added, getwalletinfo command added - phark
  • Fixed the datatables warning when encountering invalid json dynamically
  • Included a bootstrap with new installs
  • Launcher updates php, the daemon, and wallet interface for you. (go into more detail on this)
  • Changed the wallet install location ~/.neoscoin on Linux and require privelege escalation only for lib, program, and config files install on both osX and linux, but for control script on linux as well (/usr/bin/neos)
  • Neos control script for linux if just 'neos' typed brings up the launcher, 'headless' as an argument starts the wallet but not the interface
  • The wallet files on linux are no longer contained in /usr/local/neos/wallet, and are now created from a skeleton directory and copied over on a per-user basis, enabling multiple users on the system to have their own web wallet and for privacy/security.
  • Resolved the 'blank white page' when the daemon isn't fully initialized.  now explains that neos is initializing instead and automatically brings up the wallet when it's ready.

We really hope you enjoy Neos v2.0.2 and thank you for your support.  If anyone is in need of assistance, we can help through the following methods:

1.  https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#neoscoin
2.  Clicking the support icon (question mark) and sending a message to support through your wallet
3.  Teamviewer
4.  Telephone
5.  E-mail

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

     Sincerely,

syntaks

Just saw this! Wondered if there is a reason why there is no update on the "standard" Neos-Thread ;-))

And yes, 2.0.2 is awesome! Much faster and very elegant!

And the launcher is great! My grandma could install Neos! :D

Looks like great things are happening with Neos!

I've still got coins in an original wallet from the pre-web version. Can someone direct me to some upgrade instructions? Many thanks.

Hey kenny,

After you install 2.0.2, run the Launcher, then click File, then Import, and choose the old wallet.dat from the original installation.  Once you've done that, click "Start Neos" and you should be ready to go.  If not, let me know and we'll figure out whatever the issue might be.

Cool...! So many improvements over previous version.

I am currently using v2.0.1b on Windows
Is the upgrade process as simple as downloading the latest executable and installing it?

One click for the download
One click for the installation of the launcher
One click to start the wallet

ca. 20 seconds... and foolproof ;)

More or less, but be sure you don't run/install the new Neos as administrator.  That was one of the focal points with this new system was to avoid requiring admin at all.  The launcher removes that necessity.  Just let me know if you have any issues whatsoever and we'll straighten them out.

Installed v2.0.2. Everything working perfect. Great work.

Just a little annotation.

The launcher is a little bit small and I can't extend it. Have Win7 64  ;D

By chance, are you using IE to access Neos?  I'm glad the new launcher works better for you.  I've repackaged it with the Windows installer.  Thanks for the feedback it's appreciated.  Edit: just saw your stress comment.  There's no stress in letting me know you're having an issue with Neos.  It's my responsibility and commitment to you and the rest of the community to address any issues and rectify them.  I'm here every day, all through the day and night.  Make no mistake, reach out if you need a hand.

I just pushed an update out to resolve a glitch in the backup function for Linux-based wallets (but all systems should update just to keep with current releases).  Just click the lightning bolt in the top menu and you'll be updated within a minute or so.  No need to shut down or restart anything.

I'm not on linux, but I am amazed at how this all works.
How many times do you see a wallet that provides on-the-fly updates from inside the wallet?

NEOS has the best wallets in all alt-coins I've come across so far.

Good job, syntaks! A dedicated dev will always have a dedicated community.

I couldn't ask for a better community, really.  The updates that show in the wallet are platform-independent.  The wallet detects the OS you're running and it's best to always update to keep with the latest.  If it's critical, it'll say it in the update notes.  Thanks a lot for the compliments, we're just barely getting started.

If you would like to mine other coins for Neos: http://mp.neoscoin.com

What is your long term goal for this coin, and how do you plan on marketing your product? I just want to know where this coin is headed. Thanks!

Long-term I'm really wanting to go into a more supportive/functional role for merchants and usability in terms of being able to buy products using Neos.  This isn't something that'll happen overnight, but as we gain more visibility in the crypto space and continue development, it's definitely an achievable goal.  There are a few keystone details that need to be in place and they've been getting developed each piece by piece daily.  In the past I've mentioned we needed a more stable way to operate/control Neos that was more directed towards new users and veteran users alike so I wrote the launcher.  That being said in the past it was more a technically-inclined product if you want to label it that where it was "if you are familiar with how crypto works, you'll get around these glitches".  I'm trying to completely eliminate all of the "guess work" for anyone coming into Neos so that they can not only have a smoother experience with Neos but get a better idea for what crypto can do and what it's capable of.  We're trying to get supported by Casheer, whom I've heard as a really nice API which I could work some wonders with.  Currently, coingateway.net's API isn't ready just yet but given their track record I'm more than confident they'll be a viable option for bridging that crypto <-> merchant gap.  We have mobile development being explored by believe it or not - community members.  The future of Neos as I see it is bright if for no other reason than the community we have involved.  I'm just another guy stuck to his chair coding, but the community is really the lifeblood of Neos - they keep the heart pumping.

Right now my focus is on the security mechanisms I've already touched on and displayed in the youtube video.  I've just been layering a stronger foundation to enable that to happen as seamlessly and painlessly as possible.  There are a few hardware development prototypes as well but those details won't be released until we have a functional prototype that I can actually give away to some community members for testing.  We have a lot of exciting things going on behind closed doors and for no other reason we're not going into details because we want to be sure of them instead of just talking about them.  I'm really excited though to say the least because this has to be the most enjoyable time I've ever spent at a keyboard throughout my time.  It's being a part of something bigger and the ability to let our creative juices flow freely is a beautiful thing.

As it stands I'm just working on a list of kinks that were submitted to me by people that while they're not "critical", they're annoying and I won't be able to sleep unless I take care of them.

     Best regards,

syntaks

It's all great, but this...

I'm trying to completely eliminate all of the "guess work" for anyone coming into Neos so that they can not only have a smoother experience with Neos but get a better idea for what crypto can do and what it's capable of.

...is the "basic-key" in my eyes. Currently maybe too less people in Crypto recognize how important stability and user-friendliness will become.

Cool...! So many improvements over previous version.

I am currently using v2.0.1b on Windows
Is the upgrade process as simple as downloading the latest executable and installing it?

More or less, but be sure you don't run/install the new Neos as administrator.  That was one of the focal points with this new system was to avoid requiring admin at all.  The launcher removes that necessity.  Just let me know if you have any issues whatsoever and we'll straighten them out.

I am trying to install as standard user, but it asks me this every time:

Select a location outside of Program Files for your wallet. For example: C:\Wallets, My Documents\Neos etc.  Program Files is "special" on Windows.  Let me know if that solves the issue for you.

Well, it won't get past that screen until I let it have admin rights, so the folder choice was at later stage.

So I went ahead as admin, then in next steps I changed the installation location  to C:/Neos...     Then after installation I ran the launcher with standard user rights.

It is working but I don't know where it is fetching the wallet from, because when I launch wallet using new launcher, it still says v2.0.1b at the bottom.
Since I have used many older versions, i have wallet data in 3 different locations now:
C:/Users/username/app data/roaming/neos
C:/Program Files (86)/Neos
C:/Neos

Really confuse on how to uninstall the older versions

The whole move from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 has proven a pain for some folks.  I'm considering writing an "uninstaller" for the old version.  Could I teamview in and clean this all up for you?  Not everyone is having these issues, but even for the few that are I'm probably going to end up putting together a guide for migration.  This is one of the things 2.0.2 was built to avoid, it's just a matter of moving away from the old structure and onto the new so that future updates are smooth.

I think I've found the cause for this as well as some other issues some users noticed.  Are you around by chance today to verify a new installer build I just put together that it doesn't request admin first?  I'll be posting my updates and details after I've put this through a few trials.

I can confirm that the wallet works fine on Windows 8.1

The installer still asks for admin rights, but I can change the installation folder to standard user location and can run everything fine as standard user after installation is done. So not a big issue.

I think the only problem during my all previous attempts was that NEOS services were running when I tried to install a newer version.
This was taken care of by help from syntaks, by running following commands as admin in a command prompt:
  sc stop neosd
  sc stop neosui
  sc delete neosd
  sc delete neosui

I'm on version 2.0.2 now and the wallet works great!  :)

http://forum.neoscoin.com/t/do-not-use-the-import-wallet-feature-in-the-launcher/349 - please read if you are shifting from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2.  If you've never dumped a privkey on a wallet before or imported it, I'd be more than happy to assist.

New feature added in by community request - mining calculator/profitability - http://forum.neoscoin.com/t/mining-calculator-added-into-the-tools-2-18-15/351 Neos will alert you of new updates via the indicator in the top menu.  The icon is a lightning bolt.  After clicking it, the details of any updates are presented and you can then proceed by clicking "Update Now".  It's near instant and requires no shutting down or restarting of Neos.

Good morning everyone,

I've just written a post on our forum regarding Neos development, and some clarification on what lies ahead and what is involved.  It can be read at http://forum.neoscoin.com/t/the-neos-2-0-2-branch-is-officially-frozen-2-1-ahead/352/1

I just wanted to jump in and update everyone that we're nearly there for Neos 2.1.  In testing I found a few oddities which I've been working on and refining.  So far, so good.  I'll keep everyone posted regarding the status and if anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Making necessary updates to the in-wallet updater, launcher, and setup process. Following that, some rigorous testing. Almost there.
