I thought Id leave this here.

My house had a large (~50K liter) old and neglected pond, that looked like this:

Its rather nice, but the water was clear as mud. There were supposedly some fish in there, but you wouldnt be able to spot the Lochness monster  :)

I decided to clean it up last year.  A hellish work I tell you.

And to prevent it from becoming a mud pond again, I wanted some filters. Pond filters for a pond this size are exuberantly expensive, think more expensive than a small car, so I built a cheap DIY bio filter from plain rain barrels and some plumbing material.

I didnt expect it to turn the pond in to a crystal clear aquarium, the pond is surrounded by trees, and really, from everything I read, I would need at least 3-4x more barrels for a pond this size.  I would have been content just being able to spot my fish, but the results surpassed my expectations.

This is the result one year later, pics taken this morning; granted, its not an aquarium, I have certainly seen more clear water, and the water has a green/yellow tan, but boy am I happy with it!

So did you find any fish in it when you cleaned it out?

Plenty. The largest brown Koi is one of them. As are the non Koi (the goldfish, those grey, I dont know what, I guess half goldfish half shubunkin or something?). Basically all the ugly fish :)

I was thinking of adding a small "preformed plastic" pond in my front yard..... One of my customers breeds Koi........He offered me some for free....

Its hard/impossible to keep Koi in small preformed pond. Koi grow large (up to 80cm), they eat like pigs and they are difficult fish to keep, as they need excellent water quality (free of ammonia, nitrite etc) while they pollute it a lot because they eat (and therefore.. shit) so much. Its also tough keeping plants to help with the water quality because koi eat everything. For Koi, rule of thumb is one adult per 1000 liter. You can get (much) higher density but then you need really professional filter installations.

If you want a small pond in your garden, go for gold fish (there are really pretty ones) or shubunkins. Then you can get away with small, affordable filter installation., because they dont grow so large, and they can stand much higher levels of ammonium and nitrite pollution, are less susceptible to parasites and other infections.

okay maybe I'll get some little gold phish :P

Their pretty nice looking for goldfish... They probably wont die as easy either :)
