Title: Are you ready (not just willing) to make payments in Bitcoin?
Post by: Klestin on February 12, 2015, 04:00:30 PM
We all bemoan the lack of retailers currently accepting Bitcoin.  But I wonder - how many of us are really ready right now to pay with Bitcoin?  If not, what are we waiting for?  How do we expect retailers to begin accepting a currency that even some of the most devout adherents don't carry in their wallet (or smartphone)?

My Trezor is great for storage, and for spending via online, but not so useful at my local coffee shop.  Not that my local coffee shop takes Bitcoin, but can you blame them?  I'm (one of) the biggest Bitcoin fans they serve, and I don't carry any with me.  :o

I realized today that I have been contributing to that issue and pledge from here out to always have a hot wallet installed and ready to spend on my phone.

I don't trust smartphones. I'm doing all my online financial activities sitting in front of my computer, with a full keyboard and a cable connection. Still, I may consider BTC for some special purchases, but if I just want to get a soda, nothing beats cash.

I spend it all the time. Anything you want online you can buy with bitcoins.

This weekend I'll be taking a trip to Milan and plan on visiting a nice pizza place that takes bitcoins.

This is a great question. Retailers can listen to Bitcoin experts and read news about Bitcoin and decide to make this payment option a reality but if consumers don't use it the retailers won't have any incentive to keep the payment option available and subscribe to greater Bitcoin use for their own business.

I'm seeing BitCoin as an investment now as I expect the price to go up. Buy low, sell high. Not using it as a currency currently, but when it becomes less volatile I'll do that.

I am ready and willing to make payments in bitcoin.
It took some setting up but now it's so simple.
I have the bulk of my BTC stored in my multibit wallet on my laptop and when I decide I want to buy something I send the funds to the mycelium wallet on my phone.

The hardest part was getting the mycelium receive address from the phone to the laptop, I just ended up emailing it over via the share link in mycelium.

Anyway, now I can complete a transaction in seconds my scanning. The Qr code.
The decreasing price does bother me a bit but, hey money is for spending right?

I barely have 1 BTC and i would feel pretty stupid using it to buy sodas if a couple months later it goes to 1K USD. Thats the problem.
Im treating it as an asset, like gold. I dont use gold for sodas.

Do you use war money to buy sodas?

What is the difference between that and not buying bitcoins with that money?

Thats like storing it as gold, waiting for the price to increase over time.

Why not buy extra intended to be spent now?  For your investment, the end result is the same, and you help to further bitcoin acceptance in your community.

Of course I am, but that doesn't mean I spend it a lot, I am still trying to hold as much bitcoin as I can get my hands on.

Until now i haven't payed anything with BTC.
I don't have very much as well, but keep it for the long future.
I will see what happens in a few years.
I have a lot of patience.

I pay with Bitcoin whenever I can, I wish my usual stores would hurry up and accept it already.

The hoarding mentality is still deeply in place, this isn't entirely a bad thing. There are however a steady base that continues to spend their BTC's.

I'm ready and willing provided I don't have to wait 6 confirmations for a larger purchase to go through.  I know for smaller ones, the payment processors can set it to zero, since there's less risk, but if I'm buying something substantial, I need to know it went through sooner.

Otherwise, I'll have to look into Gyft, Purse.io, and Brawker to act as a middleware of sorts, since direct purchases are still not quite ready for primetime.

To me Bitcoin is not for a coffee purchase or cigarettes or anything small and never will be, maybe litecoin or doge will be good for that.

Bitcoin to me will be for anything you would usually buy online with a creditcard, its safer to not have details all over the place it is quicker and with smartcontracts could even buy a house or car, holidays etc

But i will not be spending the in the local store of coffee shop  ;D :D ;D

I feel like gollum and will not be giving up 'my precious' for quite a few years yet, this is an investment for the long term and i am sure would regret spending my coin on small bits and bobs when a few months later it would work out that i paid $50 a coffee or something lol I have invested in this like you would investing in stocks, you do not go spend stocks on a regular so i will not start with bitcoin thank us hoarders we help the price rise threw lack of availability.

Paying with Bitcoin has several disadvantages now. If I use my credit card, I get 2% cash back. if I use bitcoin, I have to pay 1% because at some point I need to convert my cash to Bitcoin.

If Bitcoin is better for merchants, then they should be willing to offer users a discount to buy with Bitcoin. If merchants gave me a 5% discount to buy with BTC, I would. Assuming the percentage they lose to chargebacks is at least 2%, this could be profitable for them (2% for chargebacks, + 3% to the credit card companies that they're saving).

I carry a small amount in my phone and have so far made online purchases. I'm the type that hoard my coins not selling back to fiat but spend at the same time. When price is low i buy to increase my stash size.

I reckon that the more btc gets accepted the less the price will be as will be well recognized
