If it really was a cold wallet then it probably was an inside job, also i think the person who finds 7000+ btc would rather keep it instead of exchanging it for 720 btc. Maybe they offered this reward on purpose to prevent doubts from people thinking bter was behind it, i could be wrong but one thing im sure is that trust with bter is mush less now and people won't be using them anymore, i think Bter is done.

no one, no robber will give 1.7 million dollars back for a 180K dollar reward!! that is so stupid
and also i find it extremely suspicious that this muck BTC was "stolen" from "cold wallet"

I agree on all points. Very likely an inside job though maybe the owners don't realize it, though I'm sure this is just an excuse and attempt at trying to look innocent. Bter is done. Why would anyone use them, not to mention they'd have to pay people back which isn't realistical.

They probably won't, and they might just declare having lost everything.

After BitBay scandal owner just retired from crypto business with traders money, thats how I see it.

If you didn't lose  there and were about to deposit , then you should be rather happy you didn't

Well I feel relieved. Similar thing happend to me when Mt. Gox collapsed. I sent an application form a few days before they went publicly bankrupt.

So all in all I could have been completely broke now  :D

Might be different in China but in most of the world there is a statue of limitations and for this sort of crime it is 4 to 10 years dependent on the jurisdiction.

BTC could go down to $0 within 5-10 years
You collect the $180K bounty and return the coins, but risk them double crossing you (jail and no money)
BTC remains stagnate in price (you walk off with $1.8 million after 4-10 years)
BTC goes up to $10K within 5-10 years (you walk off with $70 million after 4-10 years).

That is if you think these are real thieves, which they usually aren't.  You know this is going to be a repeat of the NXT hack, the hacker will come out last minute and "give back" 80% of the coin and BTER will once again hike up their fees.

I think it's more to try and find the person responsible rather than offering the reward for them returning the Coins.

BTER is done though, I can't see how they could possibly pay back that amount

There goes my 0.05 BTC  >:(

Wow that is a huge amount of BTC that was robbed by those cyber thieves , I do wonder if it is an inside job.
Will bter.com be finally shutting due to this?

They haven't commented yet . But it does seem so. After if being the second time, no one will give them a third chance.

after the bitbay scam debacle everybody knew that bter was ran by people who would not hesitate to scam if profit could be made.
The real question is rather why people kept 7000btc on that exchange after that event ?

Also considering bitbay didn't go so well for them (I mean all the scammers involved), it was obvious they would try something else...

id agree that is an inside job, to rob from cold wallet is pretty impossible things to do , well unless you got some information from the inside, or perhaps bter is ready to unplug the wire?  ::) ::)

I agree on the inside job also , but theres another possibility that also might of happened. Even the cold storage funds can be stolen judging by the news from not so long ago.

Eventually, the attacker will hit on the signatures signed by his handiwork, allowing him to discover 'k2' and ultimately derive the addresses' private key.

"He can now store the extracted private keys and watch the addresses' balance. He can use them to steal money at any point in time," Verbücheln said.

I'm not from BTER, but I read news about how they're planning to return the 'stolen' Bitcoins to their users:

They screwed up key generation, old storage should be generated on a permanently offline system, and signing done on that system where needed, with signatures relayed by thumbdrive or similar. Generated on an Internet-connected device (or worse, on cloud hosting), or printed over wireless, or not enough entropy in the random source, or too many people had access to the keys.

Now if they just employed your services they would not have lost so much of peoples bitcoin and they also would not be about to shut down because of it, i can't see anyone trading there again after this although i maybe wrong but i won't be putting another coin on that site not even for a quick trade they have lost all credibility from security to customer service f- all the way..
