PGP is 'pretty good privacy', encryption software. And most users use GnuPG, opensource implementation of it(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Privacy_Guard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Privacy_Guard).)

There are basically two things you can do with PGP:

1. Encrypt/decrypt messages between you and somebody else.
2. Prove that you or somebody else are who they say they are.

I agree with the posts above the best way is to find a use for it for you and fro there you build how familiar you are with PGP. start with using thunderbird as an email client and install engimail plugin which will make it very easy to encrypt. decrypt and keep track of your cryptographic identites.

Also don't forget to go for encryption eith higher number of bytes as it's more secure
