The Americans and Brits made sure that there will be no real army. However, the GDR had an army which was capable of defending the nation. But it disintegrated in the 1990s.

Honestly an all out world conflict is not possible with todays weaponry. It would've ended up in a nuclear winter, so countries are rather focusing on special forces.
