Has anyone defined what 'old' means?

Are we going by year or generation of technology?

Perhaps Pre-Internet vs. Post?

Let's go with pre internet ~1995.

I'm playing FF3 for the first time right now, its pretty good, a nice blend of the original and snes versions.

My favorite old school game is prob SM 64.  Pre-N64 I'd say it's Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana.  Of course all the super hard NES games are fun: Battletoads, TMNT, Contra (without the 30 lives code).

No one mentioned Wipeout yet. I don't like racing games. But used to play that a lot. In phantom difficulty with the fastest ships the game was stupidly fast. Then add to that the weapons. There were games where half the racers were killed off. Fun times. Another great one was Dungeon Keeper. Spent days playing that.

I feel very old when people include Starcraft and Command & Conquer on list of old school games... But I guess every game prior year 2000 is old right now. So I will go with Original Tomb Raider and Blood. These games were mind blowing for me at that time.

They released the source code to the game in 2002. Someone took that and made The Ur-Quan Masters. A remake of the original with some additions. It's at version 0.70 but "The only missing game feature at present is namable savegames". So now you can try winning it again. If you can cope with those graphics. :) http://sc2.sourceforge.net

It's at version 0.70 but "The only missing game feature at present is namable savegames". So now you can try winning it again. If you can cope with those graphics. :) http://sc2.sourceforge.net

I did try about a year ago. No dice :)

You know, the Interstar Credits (that the Melnorme transacted with) reminded me of Bitcoin quite a bit...

I'll toss a couple of oldie goodies out that I was hooked on that I have not yet seen mentioned.

Empire:

And Empire Deluxe:

Stunning Graphics.

And a few years later:

Master of Orion and MOOII Battle At Antares:

Babe-o-licious Elerians:

I recall having to upgrade the rig to play both of these state of the art games.

And something a little more recent that is still playable. This one soaked up many, many hours:

What's the best old school games? Even if they are new games but play like an old game for one example of this would be dynasty warriors 8 it's the same game but got that old feeling that I love. Been playing since dynasty warriors 2.

Step slip attack ? May be you dont understand, its not your fault either. In this game we used to 'slip' by stepping forward as much as we could and if we would touch the guy with still foots (having just one chance to move) , the attack would be successful.

The real "classics" would have to be games that started genres on their own, like Quake, Silent Hill, GTA III, Half-Life, Starcraft, Legend Of Zelda, Mario, Pac-Man, Star Wars KotOR, etc.

FF4 (SNES version, ditch the remakes; a little cheesy at times but so frickin' epic, incredibly fitting music)
FF6 (need I even comment?)       (SNES version of course!)

The rest are mere games, but very good:

FF Tactics (PS; best strategic battles)
Dragonquest 3 (the SNES remake; fun, great use of randomness)
Dragonquest 4 (NES; best RPG of this type)
Dragonquest 8 (PS2; fun, long, graphic style ages well)
Soul Blazer (SNES; cute, fun, feel-good action-RPG)
Secret of Mana (SNES; fun, neat Bali-inspired music)
Lost Odyssey (XBOX; spiritual successor to Final Fantasy, emotionally powerful and "makes you a better person" (like FF4/FF6))
SMB3 (duh)
Super Mario World (duh)
Super Dodgeball (NES; hugely fun game back in the day, especially 2-player)
Kickle Cubicle (NES; obscure sleeper hit, great puzzle game, makes you smarter)
Zelda 3 (duh)
Tetris Attack (SNES; dumb name, absolutely classic game, nothing to do with Tetris, makes you smarter)
Dungeon Crawl (free PC game but feels old skool/roguelike, extreme hardcore, ultra-addictive, can play for years)
Super Bomberman (SNES; fantastic party game, never found a better game for 3-4 players besides maybe Mario Kart battle mode)
Twin Seeds 2 (obscure free PC "bullet hell" game)
Street Fighter 2 (arcade original version and Champion Edition; after that they fell off a lot; need a very good joystick)

I was always a big Flight Sim guy.

I loved Red Baron by Sierra/Dynamix 1990.
I've had just about all the Microsoft Flight Simulators.

From NES I would say Ninja Turtles Arcade was great.
SNES I recall playing a lot of Joe & Mac and really enjoying it.
N64 Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey, MarioKart and of Course... Smosh Bros.
Xbox I thought Return to Castle Wolfenstein, specifically for the online gameplay, was the best there ever has been. I've yet to play another online FPS that requires everyone to work as a team for victory. If everyone is a medic they can constantly heal, but they'd run out of ammo, and vice versa for the Lt. I really wish they would just make a brand new one and base it off the maps and gameplay. Bring back elimination as well.

I miss RTCW soooo much! It's one of my all-time favorite games. I played the pc version. The 'Penguin' server held matches with up to 64 players. I played RTCW: Enemy Territory after that and I even went on to play Quake Wars, but it wasn't quite the same. You should try 'Heroes and Generals' (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1033511.0). It's not as good as RTCW was, but still pretty good and F2P.

Depends on the system..

on the Atari 2600 Ms Pac-Man and Yars Revenge still hold up
on Intellivision - Lock 'n Chase, BurgerTime, AD&D are very good
NES - there's many just depends on your taste :)

You can still play some of the old gameboy games (Pokemon etc.) on your phone or tablet.

If you have an ios device go here: http://www.gba4iosapp.com/download/

If on android, just search up "gameboy emulator" and there will be a lot of results.

As for some of the best old school games, I would think Pokemon, or Final Fantasy.

If you're not playing Landstalker (Genesis), Wizardry V (Super NES), or Dragon Quest VIII (PS2) on the appropriate emulators then I don't know what the fuck you are doing with your free time and you should probably give it back.

I will accept Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (PS2) as an acceptable backup, but that's about it.

My favorite will probably always be Half Life1. While I was blown away by the second game, the first game really solidified me as a gamer. It was just so, so, so much better than anything else out in the FPS genre at the time.

I thought the Gearbox expansions were serviceable and the HL2 episodes (especially ep. 2) were often brilliant, but the two main entries in the franchise are the only ones that really shook things up enough to be considered classics.

I know that in every country people have some different old school games and here are the games that we was used to play in Macedonia... :)

Hide and seek was definitely on of my favorite old school games that we was playing. We never watch on the clock, we just know that when the sun goes down, we should be outside and prepare for the game. I remember know that I was one of the fastest kids and usually when I have to save the group I do that 9/10 times! :D

There are also other games that I can't remember of their names but was very popular in our country like... One of people in the group should close the yes and by touching the face of their friends should guess which face is it. The rules are simple. You have to guess all the faces if you like to win the game! :D

What's the best old school games? Even if they are new games but play like an old game for one example of this would be dynasty warriors 8 it's the same game but got that old feeling that I love. Been playing since dynasty warriors 2.

I'd suggest you check Amazon for these types of games.
The best older games are probably the ones developed by Nintendotm.
You may find some good emulators by searching Google that have games that are already programmed that you can play.
This website http://inventwithpython.com/, if you have Python and Pygame, would be quite good for simplistic games. You could also chane them to whatever you want for the games too. It has games that you can download such as Tetris and Snake.

Planescape Torment , Fallout 1 & 2 , Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, The Temple of Elemental Evil , Icewind Dale 1 & 2 , Neverwinter 1 + 2 + expansions. (a bit after 90's but feeling a part of 90's old school gaming)

beyblade  and Mario are the two games during my childhood.

Mario has always been a great game! There are also many variations of the game with similar stories throughout (Mario always tries to find the Princess Peach from Bowser)! All of the games are different and have different difficulties of levels (Excluding Mario Kart).

I would play them all, but they require different gaming systems: Gameboy (older), Gameboy (newer/original DS), DS (generic, i, iXL), 3DS (also 2Ds), Wii, WiiU.

So you would need 6 games consoles to play them all.
