Title: Users who sign their post
Post by: twister on February 23, 2015, 08:14:36 AM
I see some people sign their post and was just wondering why they feel the need to do that?
It annoys me just-a-wee-bit  :D

I mean what's the point?
Would anyone really think that this post was not made by me if I don't sign it?

Maybe they do it just to annoy oversensitive people like you?  ;D

signed sincerely,

I don't get it either. Isn't this what the signature area is supposed to be used for? it must be annoying typing out that signature every time.

Guess they do that to post looks more official lol. Sure it looks funny but dont bothers me.

But what is the use of a signature area if all of the author info is allready available. I think the name should be changed to something else, it is not a signature, it is pretty useless even. Other than signature campaigns or spamming you own site :)

It is unnecessary and redundant really.

I don't get it either. Isn't this what the signature area is supposed to be used for? it must be annoying typing out that signature every time.

I don't really know why they do it either but must just be their 'thing', as annoying as you may or may not find it (though I agree it must be a hassle to write or copy and paste it with every post).

And yea, it annoys me just a bit as well lol.

Yes. It gets on my nerves. I've seen it on plenty of other forums too where every single post has been signed for years on end. I assume they immediately kill themselves if they forget to do it one dark day.

Wait til you get hacked. You'll sign every post you do then. I'm going to from now on once I get in my Coinbase account. Believe me you don't need to do it all the time, but every now and then you should. This way everyone will know it was at least you at this point in time. Take my advice, with the rise of stolen accounts, you won't regret it.

I should end every post with something like..
By F.E since people calls me like that on PD or other places.

When you sign a address it shows that you are the one signing it. It verifys the ip address its coming from.

That's the problem:
let's say an hacker steals an account of someone who does that.
If he is a good hacker(or smart and not a script kiddie) he will just copycat your older posts. Lets say from now on I sign my post with F.E.
And I get hacked, but the hacker will just take couple of minutes to study your old posts and copy that. So, an hacker would just copy the fact you sign your posts.

Exactly, signing the end of your posts is just a habit some people have and if your account gets hacked the hacker just copycats and everyone else is none the wiser. What's this about it verifies the IP address it comes from  ???

From my understanding, when you sign a message with your signature, it verifys that you was the user that created the address. So if someone else trys to sign a message with your signature, it won't verify because the ip's don't match.

the only acceptable method of proving ownership is by signing a message (including current date and desired new email address) using a Bitcoin address or PGP key associated with the account. A Bitcoin address or PGP key is associated with the account only if the account posted the key/address

If the original account holder did not post BTC address or PGP key then there is no association in existence.

Actually signing the message? Or contact info in the signature? Actual PGP signing is sorta rare I guess but useful in certain occasions.
