Title: Power Supply 700w
Post by: nicolocado on February 24, 2015, 10:16:55 AM
I bought a SP20 Jackson. I use 2x700w PSU but they keep switching off after 5min mining. Why?

Many thanks

Do the PSU's shut off immediately? Assuming the miner is fine, the PSU's could be going into protection mode. I had this happen with an old PSU.

you either have the PSU hooked up incorrectly, or the PSu you bouht cant handle the loads. make sure no wires are crossed, if you clip wired them make sure you used good clips, if you hardwired them make sure no single threads are touching anything they should not be. If its all hooked up correctly using the correct wires then the PSU is no good and needs replaced.

this situation happens whenever its hooked up wrong or the PSU cant provide enough power for the miners.

Make sure they're at least 85% Bronze rated PSU's.

Had that happen to me before with some generic power supplies I just ripped off a rig, and it shut down because it couldn't handle the load.  If you get eVGA, Corsair, Seasonic, etc these brand name ones usually are at least Bronze rated or higher.

They probably can not handle the load, you could get better PSUs or lower the max watts on your SP20s config.

I am guessing you bought some crappy PSU's which were overly cheap and they lied on their loads.

You are right. They are relatively cheap... MARS MP700, i though they were going be more than enough but...

I have 3x SP20 Jackson and I found that if I increase w more than 100 the PSU goes off... I should have been able to set the PSU to 280 to exploit the full potential. However, if I was lucky enough to have a good PSU, cables would not have lasted more than 1 week...

I don't think you can lump all cables in one group.   Higher end PSU's depending on what you get have much better cables (and quality psu, etc).

I suggest for most do not get very low quality PSU with mining.  The PSU will be put through a lot of use for long periods of time.

My 3 I seem go go for are RM1000's, Lightning 1300, and EVGA 1300.   They are all kept and will be used for future miners.  Recently got rid of some S3's and now have stock again for if/when I want to expand more.

Next

 sp20e is not   a 1700gh miner
sp20e should only be run at 1600gh with really good psu's  and sucks power like a mad dog.
 you should not attempt .

unless you have a very good psu and your power price  for  kwatts needs to be  very low 6 or 7 cents.

your goals should be return that shit set of psu's and buy a good one.

where do you live USA ?

you should  try settings like this once you get a good psu.

Use only psu brand like corsair, evga or seasonic for miner. Miner is power hungry beast. Cheap psu only will cost you more money.

What about silver-stone and uranus? What if I put two units of 850 or 1050 in each miner?

Silverstone ST85F-GS 850W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256100) is good based on jonnyguru (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=365)
But before that try to give some load +5V rail. Old cdrom maybe. Some psu require some load on 5V rail.

I would purchase a Server PSU with a breakout board, they are quite reliable and cheap from what I have heard.

Speaking of which, there's a goldmine of PSU's to be found at a reasonable price right here in this forum:

You just have to know where to look or whom to ask.

Can you ask the support of this SP20?

It's his PSU, Spondoolies will say the same thing.

Yes, you are right.  I bought today 2 second hand Uranus 850 (bronze) for 70euros from an outcast shop! The guy had in store at least 25 Radeon graphic cards and 20 PSU for sale. I thought he used the graphic cards to mine in the good old times. However, he was using them for phone unlocking :D

He have an Uranus 1050 for 60 euros on sale. Should I buy it?

Thank in advance for everyones help!

I've been using FSP PSU's. I have their gold in my main system, a small bronze for one miner and a larger platinum for two other miners. I've also used Antec PSU's which are good. As long as you get a PSU which has good power across all rails.

I had a PSU rated at 54A on the 12v+ rail. When I tried to run ONE S3 miner, it blew up.

I think silver-stone make some good quality PSU's, I'm not too familiar with uranus. However, I know for sure it stinks.
