Title: Which is the best mobile wallet?
Post by: bigblind on February 25, 2015, 09:43:31 AM
Hello guys,

Which is your favourite mobile wallet?

Until now I have been online using bitcoin core on my PC, as it felt the safest way.
What are good alternatives, not always have to synchronize the blockchain.

Especially for iOS. I am fuddling with Coinbase and Blockchain mobile Apps right now.

I would only use a popular wallet.

MyCelium is my android wallet.

Electrum and Bitcoin core for the PC.

Why don't you make a poll ?

Without a shadow of a doubt, it's breadwallet (https://itunes.apple.com/app/breadwallet/id885251393). I don't get it how people can still favor Blockchain.info's (cr)app.

That's for iOS. For Android, it's Mycelium (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycelium.wallet).

For Windows Phone, I think there is no wallet app yet?

Probably you should check out some of the reviews posted over here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=967273.0
If you are on android, the best would be mycelium. Hive is also cool if you are into social networks kind of thing. Anyway, if you are on IOS, there's only like 4 options available to choose from and among those, Hive is one which I've seen works the same both on android and ios.

I've become a big fan of GreenBits (from GreenAddress.it (https://greenaddress.it/) guys) myself. In my opinion it has the best security (after dedicated hardware wallets) for keeping your coins safe.

blockchain do have a mobile wallet as well https://blockchain.info/wallet/android-app i am using this most trusted and very lite

but the amount is way off, the online version states my correct balance, the app does some strange calculation. Varying everytime I check, balance way up or way down, always off by 0.02 BTC/5 euros

but it works for paying and getting paid, the last transactions are visible, that is what matters. And my phone needs replacement soon, so not going to bother installing but on my next phone no more blockchaininfo wallet.

Breadwallet. Look no further. It's absolutely the best.

Oh, and on Android, use Mycelium. It's SO much better than blockchain.info's app.

Yes, you can import the private key from your blockchain.info wallet into Mycelium.

For Windows Phone, I think there is no wallet app yet?

Actually for Windows Phone there is this wallet option:

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/bitcoin-wallet/6beb6013-ec4c-47e2-80c8-4b5f9dc4a307
Ah nice, that app has been around for a long time, but it used to be restricted to testnet only. Great to see it now supports the actual Bitcoin network. Too bad it's a paid app :-\

I've also seen people using this one for a long time:

https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/bitcoin/ca65fc5b-14f0-4da4-8e39-e2d4b702b2ea

But for some unknown reason, this was changed to "no longer published" a few months ago. Sucks.

I also hope Copay (https://copay.io/) (by Bitpay) will soon be officially available in the Windows Phone market, right now it's still in Beta.

Agreed, Breadwallet is the best for iOS. HD, open source, free, very clean and secure UX. I had one hiccup some time ago where I couldn't send BTC and I had to reinstall the app, but it has since been updated and now works fine.

I like Mycelium but not as much.

Disadvantage of Coinbase: you need to register an account with some 3rd party. With real Bitcoin wallets, you are your own bank and you don't have to register anything, anywhere.

That's more dangerous, since you have to rely on 3rd party. As long as your wallet are HD wallets, you just have to write down 12 words in order and secure it. When you lose your phone or someone steal it, you can use 12 words to recover your coins. (Mycelium supports PIN to protect from unauthorized actions)

Hive iOS version isn't decentralized AFAIK. I recommend using Breadwallet or Mycelium over Hive. I, however, use Hive as LTC wallet because of the lack of good LTC iOS wallets. ANX is there but it is less secure than Hive.

* Hive use similar deterministic tree structure (BIP39) to Breadwallet, so you may be able to use Hive backup phrases on Breadwallet and vice versa.

MyCelium is great for beginners and expert alike but my favorite android wallet is wallet32, it's a HD wallet and has just about everything you need, not sure about signed message option, only just thought of that I will check now and update.
Green address is also a good wallet but has been a bit slow for me lately.

Edit: wallet32 does not have a signed message option, pitty because it's the only thing missing for a good android wallet.
