Sorry if this is a stupid question but what is the volume number representing on mtgox? How many coins the site currently has or something else?

Number of bitcoins traded through the site (in the past 24 hours, I presume).

You can go to bitcoincharts.com and see 30 day volume is over 1,000,000 BTC.

That is an important number to keep track of, however, an increase doesn't directly translate into more customers, just more trades. You can do some statistics to come to a closer approximation of "new money".
