Title: Since TrueCrypt died, who is the successor?
Post by: FanEagle on February 26, 2015, 02:56:20 PM
Wikipedia says there are 2 forked applications, VeraCrypt and CipherShed.
From the features VeraCrypt ispires me more, but if you have any hint for something that does a better job, I'll be glad to hear your opinion 8)

VeraCrypt is a fork of TrueCrypt. It's essentially TrueCrypt 8.0.

I still don't see a problem with TrueCrypt. The devs suddenly dropped it with no real reason. A security audit was performed and no security issues have been found.

Only phase 1 was completed and it was a success but phase 2 is still needed

there is speculation that the devs were approached by an agency and rather than help they dropped the project.
The no comment is pretty much the canary in the mine though. If it was anything else I'm sure they would
have spoken more openly on why they stopped.
There were rumors that an agency has backdoored the 7.*version again just rumors and everyone just says
be vigilant. I'm sticking with my older version of True Crypt for now though.
example ubuntu privacy team found no issues with 7.0a in their audit

From what I read, even the latest version released extract only, is clean Too.
Yes I find very difficult to believe they dropped so easly without a real word, faking security issues, and Yes,like dverything good, seems like agencies want to give the touch for being in control of every kind of situation, like for example I red some cases on Wikipedia where they tried to recover files unsuccessfully.

It's still only 1 piece to the puzzle though. Probably wouldn't matter if your HDD firmware was compromised.

I used to use Truecrypt, but immediately stopped after news broke that they stopped development. Now I use DiskCryptor (https://diskcryptor.net/wiki/Main_Page).

Is it able to encrypt single files/folders?

I heard it's still uncrackable, and that the developers where pressured by agencies to state that there encryption had been comprimised, maybe it's was just that good!
