Title: Tipping May Be Bitcoin's Next Killer Application
Post by: Paleus on February 26, 2015, 08:49:14 PM
The next killer application in bitcoin may just turn out to be micropayment tipping through social media and online communities. In what is increasingly being seen as a ‘tipping revolution‘ internet users are now using bitcoin to send small payments to businesses directly online for their work. This viral growth of the emerging digital tipping industry could very well be the next application in bitcoin and blockchain payment technology.

Why is tipping with digital currency a big deal?

Tipping allows for the very first time content creators to be compensated directly for their work on a micro-transactional level, something which analog payments systems were too rigid and slow to perform previously. Digital currency systems such as bitcoin however, operate with no intermediary businesses and only need to be registered through a ‘tipping network’.

ChangeTip who has grown to become one of the market leaders in the early bitcoin tipping industry in a span of less than 6 months for example, uses off-chain, and possibly soon, sidechain transactions to clear their inventories. Because of this, not every small tip needs to be recorded fully into the main bitcoin blockchain, but only references to the main network need to be made to ensure integrity among funds.

I like how ChangeTip works, it's ease of use, and the way it pretty much works across all social media platforms.

Great for Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter, and really is a great way to get someone that's new to this to actually to be interested in Bitcoin.

I thought changetip already is the best app/service for bitcoin, which also applied to the general population, if they wish to try it out.

Resturants should have a QR code on the tables or menu cards that people can use.

That actually is a cool idea, but bitcoin isn't that widespread yet. But I am sure, waiters, can already chose to accept tips through bitcoin.

What's important is when if you send a tip via facebook or even reddit, indirectly that person receiving the tip will be interested to check out what it is all about and decided to find out more about bitcoin. I see this as the next big thing that could really help to lift bitcoin into mainstream adoption. And this is the right direction we are moving.

The Changetip app is good, but for tipping to really work you need a focused community.
The only two coins I see that really have an active tipping community are:

Dogecoin - tips for internet content
AppleByte - tips for artists

Actually not first attempt to make off-chain zero fee micropayment solutions. It works until someone transfer all ballance and disappears. TradeFortress is one example. This is always risk with any centralized service in my opinion

It seems very trivial but micropayments focused on tipping has the potential to unleash massive entrepreneurial and creative energy in new and exciting ways

Like this is my IDEA! HERE: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=962295.msg10524828#msg10524828

I've already figured everything out! I'm trying to tell people that this will change the world but I can't seem to find people to create the website for us!!

Gosh this is irritating.

I don't know how I can find people to pitch the idea for!!

The responses in this thread kinda show just how dumb the average person in the bitcoin community is....

Bitcoin cannot handle microtransactions. Hence, using bitcoin for tipping will never, ever work(On a large scale).

Tipping is not also ideal as it will generate dust outputs that can be a problem to the receiver and the sender as well. The thought of tipping is good, but the implications are rather not good :(

Good topic. I've been working on someways to solve somethings with a customized changetip bot.

I read what this guy had to say, (even got him using it ) http://mindbodymash.com/running-on-empty-experiments-in-pay-what-you-want/ .

My changetip bot is called TipHound and runs on the r/tiphound reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/tiphound).

You turn your links into tippable content at : TipHound.me (http://www.TipHound.me) .

Now your asking what is the use of it ? I don't have all the answers , but I'm starting to get a better idea as time goes and will come back here and write more about what I've discovered.

Just wanted to say tipping can change things no doubt. Thanks all.

The dust issue is resolved by people using off-chain services (like changetip that was mentioned in the article) to tip others, and once there is a large enough amount of accumulated amounts of tips received, they can then 'withdraw' to an address of which the user controls the private keys too.

I however really do not understand the concept of tipping, at least in the way that most people tip on places like reddit. I would say it would be more appropriate for people to receive a tip when they give a good answer w/ explanation that someone is looking for, not for making a good point, or for providing information that was previously unknown and was not being seeked

Well tipping would definitely help grow the Bitcoin user base and if implemented right could be a boon to content creators.
This is one area however where I feel competition is not a good thing. Ideally it would be an application developed by the core Bitcoin team with profit not being the motivating factor. And if this could be spread internet wide, I believe we would have a winning strategy for Bitcoin adoption.
