Title: 1 block / 10 minutes yet blockexplorer shows 278 blocks in the last 22 hours? Post by: w128 on May 24, 2011, 10:13:40 PM Can someone explain and make me feel dumb?

Difficulty only adjusts every ~2000 blocks. Title: Re: 1 block / 10 minutes yet blockexplorer shows 278 blocks in the last 20 hours? Post by: w128 on May 24, 2011, 10:27:50 PM I've seen this several times and only now comprehend what it actually means. I see a misguided uproar followed by a glut of cheap, barely-used GPUs on the secondary market in the near future. Gamers rejoice! Sure. What's puzzling me now is the change in block generation rate between yesterday and today. Yesterday ended with 298 blocks or about one block every 4 minutes. Today we're at 102 blocks in just under 17 hours or one block every 9 minutes. However, most estimates of total hashing power have only gone up. Did some massive "dark" array go offline overnight? Would it make sense for a large pool to throttle itself in order control the rate of difficulty increase? Title: Re: 1 block / 10 minutes yet blockexplorer shows 278 blocks in the last 22 hours?
