Title: What do you guys think about this Whole Newbie system?
Post by: lolballer73 on August 01, 2012, 07:23:58 PM
I know what they are trying to get at, stop new users from spamming the threads but i also think it is kinda pointless because we have to waste our time on these newbie threads for a while before we can get to the "big boiii" threads. I think all new members should be given a chance to post on all the threads and if they fuck it up by spamming or something else, they should be kicked to the newbie threads until they know more about the bitcointalk newtwork.

I believe this is a reasonable restriction which helps to prevent people from spamming and trashing on forum.

Your argument
we have to waste our time on these newbie threads for a while before we can get to the "big boiii" threads.

You can go to the other thread, you just can't post there yet.  There's a difference.

For exceptions, there is a whitelist request thread.  If you can show that you've helped others here, have been constructive in some manner, or have a specific need then often that will help towards gaining post access to the forums.

Read for 5h and post 5 post, I think it's reasonable.

I made an account here a year ago and this wasn't here. I don't mind it. People are still helpful on this board.

I dont really mind. Ive been on a lot of forums where theres no reason to post in the "intro" thread. At least now theres incentive ;-)

I dislike the current system strongly. There are still people on the internet who'd never post stupid questions but rather lurk, then lurk some more and finally submit only a few well thought-out contributions. At the moment I really can't motivate myself to create meaningful content in a spammy sub-forum just to increment my post count. There are more pleasant activities to waste time on. Getting back to the lurk cave.

The restrictions should be lowered.

I found other threads outside the newbie forum where I could add something constructive.

It were be awesome if a better solution could be found. How do other big sites solve this?

Yep, it's crap. (Woot, now I'm one post closer to "big boii"!)

It's lame, but something in place at these forums is probably a good thing.

Its not that bad, other sites require you are on the site for a week sometimes. And it keeps the spam out.

If you just look around Newbies, it's a mess. Most of the spam and garbage and trolls with 1-post accounts saying "positive paypal trade" doesn't make it to the rest of the board, and that's good.

I dont know about everyone else, but I only looked at bitcoins because paypal is possibly the single worst company for customer service and addressing issues.

Well, if you put all new accounts into a subforum and force them to post, then you're obviously getting a mess. Maybe you're co-creating something that wouldn't exist otherwise. (See? In my right mind I wouldn't make such a pointless circular argument, but the voices rules made me do it. Second post, heading north.)

So the volunteer moderators should be on top of every thread in the forum with a "ban to newbies" hammer at the ready?
I dont think they get paid enough

What I have noticed is people with good projects or comment be whitelisted from this forum early

Think on it 1 forum to watch over and the ability to set ppl "free early" or heavily moderate all the threads and weild the ban hammer of relegation?
hmmm

When the mods get paid nothing...to me it makes a pretty obvious choice :)

No, it was a mess before the Newbie jail was enforced. Lots of spam etc

It's okay. I'm a lurker so I didn't mind. Was kind of annoying that I lurked for quite a while before even making an account, so had to do it some more when I was ready to post.

Not perfect, but it is necessary. There are a few spammers (manual, not bots) that hit the site regularly. Nothing really stops spammers dedicated enough to do it by hand, so we have to contain it.

I've been lurking around for a few months and it is taking some real effort to actually get in the mindset to post instead of lurk.

It would be nice if we had access to few more part of the forum like Off Topic or something that doesn't need to be contributed directly into the Bitcoin.

yes it would be nice

it would also be nice if people put their brains in gear and took a few deep breaths before posting, didnt spam forums. didnt troll others, only posted facts, spread peace not war... I could go on, lots of things could be nice.

Unfortunately in life we meet things that appear "unfair" to us, usually this is a result of "a few bad apples spoiling it for the rest".

bad apples have been here.....

i guess this rule was made after i made my account cuz i have posts in other forums but now i can only post here :)

def dumb but understandable if they had spam problems.  if they really want to fight spam there should be a demonoid-esque system of invites/vouching where you get in trouble if you give somebody an invite and they spam.

isn't Gox in serious danger being at a .com address?  i fear governments are gonna seize Gox like the poker sites when btc market cap increases.  then the US DOJ will have a money grab incentive and they can freeze almost any bank account in the world...

That's actually already in place, however the users can't do it directly like with Demonoid - they have to ask one of the staff members or post in the whitelist request thread.

The community is significantly being effected with trolls and people set out to discredit Bitcoins as a whole, any deterrent is a step in the right direction.

I've been a fairly long time lurker myself and find the "newbie jail" to be an annoyance, but given the way Bitcoin attracts troublemakers, I can kind of understand it.

Even though I'm still a newbie, I can appreciate the system. Some other forums get flooded with worthless posts in every section, and leeched and spammed by worthless accounts. So honestly, I'm happy this forum has the newbie system.

This forum is unique because it also provides a history for the users which supports their reputation.  How long you've been here, how many posts you have, how many +1s other users have given you on transactions all provide some insight to the user behind the alias.  I can't think of any other forum where the alias matter as much.  I think the rules make sense.
