I remember years ago someone telling me authorities looked at your power bill to try and find people growing. Because of all the legitimate reasons for your power to go up I'd put it down at the time to paranoia from them smoking too many cones :D.

(Frequently the remarkably high current consumption led the police investigators of the project group cannabis on the trace of the greenhouses.)

dialogue during police raid:
"are you mining bitcoins ?
no, sir. just growing marijuana and make child porn.
ok then."

That's pretty stupid, the cops see high power usage, the first thing they'll assume "WE FOUND A MARIJUANA GROWER!", and not "Probably just some gamer with a powerful computer.", I really never thought they'd think you're growing weed just because you're using a bit too much power.

They should have used this as a plot device in Farenheight 411.

"We noticed you've had a light on for most of the night. You aren't reading books are you?"
"No sir, those are grow lights. These are my hemp plants."
"I heard you can make paper from that plant. We'll be keeping a close eye on you."

Thank god nobody got hurt... plenty of videos of over-zealous police on pot raids going in guns blazin.

I wonder how that went?  "Sir, what is this contraption with 8 video cards sticking out of it?"

The Canadian town of Mission, BC has a bylaw that allows the town's Public Safety Inspection Team to search people's homes for grow ops if they are using more than 93 kWh of electricity per day.

This so-called "bust" is an urban legend that almost certainly didn't happen.

Someone wrote an article about a blog post about an IRC chat where someone said something that supported a rumor about the situation where a minehouse could be mistaken for a growhouse.

There's more evidence for the existence of so-called "gods" than for the existence of the raid being discussed here.

excessive electricity consumption is often an indicator of a serious safety hazard.
Properties, which exceed the mandated threshold of 93 kwh/day, would be reviewed and inspected.

The PSIT inspects homes which are using more than 93 kwh/day of electricity and are observed to show signs of being a controlled substance property.

If the three-person inspection team reaches a consensus that there is no obvious reason for the property to be consuming abnormal amounts of electricity, or that the property exhibits one of the obvious signs of a controlled substance property, a notice of inspection is posted to the door of the property indicating that the PSIT will return for a home inspection in 24 hours.

24 hours later, the PSIT returns to perform a property inspection – for safety reasons, a RCMP officer is within sight distance (typically at the end of the driveway).   If the resident of the property grants access to PSIT, the team performs an inspection, which typically takes between 30 to 90 minutes.  If PSIT is denied access the team leaves and returns the next day with a warrant from a Justice of the Peace. If the warrant specifies, an RCMP member may accompany the PSIT inside the property for the inspection.

This is not a raid

Grow a crop and turn it into biomass to fuel a generator to mine bitcoins ?

The only thing this story is missing was the cops shooting some guy's dog - oh and the truth.   :)

Claims some guy in IRC  ::)

Indeed. This entire story is a prime example of Internet hysteria.

I explicitly remember someone on either this forum or Reddit/r/bitcoin saying 'oh- wouldn't it be funny if the cops started raiding these bitcoin miners under suspicion for growing?' A day or two later this story appears, judging from some guy on IRC who got picked up by a low-level blog. From there, much like fractional-reserve banking, the story was pyramided up by more and more legitimate news sources, each one sourcing the one below it. This story was on Slashdot. All from one guy's probably-false statement on IRC.
