Post by: mavericklm on March 07, 2015, 09:14:50 AM
helloooooooooo!

any ghetto or not ghetto mods done on sp10?

any idea if it's running without the 6 normal fans plugged in?

how about the psu, if take out its fan will it still run?

thx!

No mods, put it somewhere either no-one can hear it (soundproof outbuilding), or where no-one cares (datacenter)

You could take the entire thing out of the case and point large fans at it I guess. But you would need to clock it down to its minimum speed before testing and be ready to switch it off pronto.

As for the PSU, which I think is where much of the noise comes from anyway, I think you are a bit stuck.

You could go down the immersion route, but thats a waste of money really.

DC is not for me
immersion is too expensive

got 2 posibilities: place it in the basement or garage
                             make a duc for 4 12cm fans

....

A large amount of the noise from the SP10 comes out of the PSU, particularly at highest speeds.

heres my advice:

1) use 200-250V power when possible. this is probably 10% quieter than on 120V
2) set the system fans to the lowest possible so that the exhaust temps are <70C. if undervolting you can go <40% using ssh.
3) undervolt. running at 100-400GH slower speeds can reduce power consumption by 150-500W

If you want the minimum noise, this is the best way:
use 200V+ outlet.
use SSH, login (root, root), and type:
Code:
vi /etc/mg_custom_mode
hit enter.
in the file, press 'i' (enters insert mode) and change the file to:
Code:
FAN:25 625 625 635 820 50
. press 'esc', type ':wq', and it will bring you back to the ssh main terminal.
In the web browser, click the 'restart minergate' button on the main page and wait the 30 seconds. it should drastically drop in volume.

this will limit the system, causing it to run at about 1050-1100GH/780-840W and is about the slowest speed at which the device is stable. you may see one or two chips disabled on the stats page. if more than ~4 disable, change the file so that instead of 625mv starting, its 628mv. you can also go lower if you want a bit more efficiency, but <610 the system might try to reboot if too few chips initialise correctly. at the stats above I get 1090GH/810W and is reasonable for use in a basement or behind a closed door.

replacing the fans wont make much change, since the majority of noise is the PSU fan (its like 20mm or something insanely small)

There is an absolutely dirty, dirty mod that I prepared but never attempted. Remove the entire thing from its case and lay the hashing boards out flat (ON SOMETHING NON CONDUCTIVE!) and slightly raised. Get box fans and rest them on the hashing boards.

You're still going to be wrecked by the PSU's fan noise though, which is the main problem on SP10s.

I just set up two of these in a datacenter and yes they are loud.  They produce a distinct high pitch whine can be heard over all of the other servers.  I'm running at medium setting and getting temps in the upper 50s / low 60s, I suppose I could try dialing down the fans a little but that probably won't make much difference...

running turbo mode: Mining Rate: 1545.74Ghs
today i thought the washing machine was doing the las spinning of the laundry ;D

i got used to it, not so much when i'm close to it. in the rest of the house i simply don't care about it

happy to have it in my house ;D
