Title: Is post like these consider a spam or not?
Post by: Muhammed Zakir on March 07, 2015, 02:51:53 PM
Hello,

Is a post answering to a question which is already answered considered as spam? I reported a few posts like these but it wasn't deleted except 1 or 2 IIRC.

Example:

Question:
Was looking around for this. Although when I just logged in, haven't post anything, I tried to send a PM and it said my last activity is less than 360 seconds ago. Doesn't make sense... Does sending PM count as 1 activity?

First post:
Yes and so does logging in and attempting to post. Make sure you wait the full six minutes before you try do anything and you should be fine. The time you have to wait goes down drastically the more activity you get so you don't have to bare it for long.

Second post:
In the beginning you will have to wait some time to post, send pms, and other things

As you go up in rank this requirements dissapear

If you look at above posts, you can see contents of second post is same as first one. So shouldn't such posts be deleted?

Sorry for my poor English!

RD965 is doing so because he wants that "post" count, so also if someone else has replied to the question it is obvious that it will arrive another 3-4 users reply to the same question (but the question has already an answer).

maybe low quality post, as hilarious already answered the question and all the second guy did was rephrase it.

I don't think that should count as spam though.. unless the second guy does that a lot.

If the second post ended with something "extra" that added to the conversation, then it would be much better.

It would actually be reay helpful to know what is really considered as spam, lately i have seen senior members and hero members get banned for spamming or low quality posts wich is kind of scary

Thanks for posting but still I haven't got an accurate answer to my question and please don't concetrate on the posters. I just gave an example.

This is common nowadays. People read only the first post, ignore the answers below and write their own to raise their post count.
There's a lot of dumb and ignorant answers in almost every thread, but what can you do?

Report them.

Because lately we had an increase in the number of well paying campaigns and a spam fest started.
I know that a lot of posts in "Off Topic" in a short period of time can get you banned, same as short posts with a paid signature.

But short posts can be helpful aswell, short posts =/= not quality posts. Of course posts like "lmao this is good" should be deleted but if someone asks for a good exchange for example and you tell him, yes use "x" echange is really good and trusted. That obviously shouldnt be treated as a bad or spam post

Isn't spam considered as sending/posting the same message to multiple recipients ?

Maybe the posting you're referring to is considered to be unrelated other than a spam post.

Another definition: 'Unwanted or intrusive advertising.' Search google or check in dictionary.

Maybe the posting you're referring to is considered to be unrelated other than a spam post.

Nope, if you check it fit the above criteria.

True, still doesnt make it intrusive or unwanted since thats the purpose of signatures

I understand you frustration, I do see  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=956738.0)that kind of posting thanks to ultra high signature campaign payments, people are just reposting the same shit over and over again, but there's nothing to do about this, only a self moderated thread can deal with this since I don't bitcointalk has the manpower to check those kind of posts since it's not enough to see the reported post alone but to check for all the latest post made by him or others..

I agree. It's ok to repeat or reassure something but only if you can add something extra really. Answering a question that has already been answered is unnecessary in my opinion and it does make me roll my eyes when I see it like I did with the post quoted in the op but it's not currently against 'the rules'.

This is common nowadays. People read only the first post, ignore the answers below and write their own to raise their post count.

Whilst I don't doubt most people are doing it to raise their post count and a signature does contribute to this behaviour it's not just limited to this forum. Look at any forum or even yahoo answers etc and you'll find the same behaviour but a paid signature sure will encourage it but I'm not sure whether the posts should be deleted or not. It can be difficult to decide what constitutes a unnecessary post and will differ from mod to mod, though in the quoted case in the op clearly it adds nothing and is unnecessary so it could be seen as spam (and if that is the case, removed).

It would actually be reay helpful to know what is really considered as spam, lately i have seen senior members and hero members get banned for spamming or low quality posts wich is kind of scary

What Hero Member was banned? Just contribute relevantly and put some effort in but lots of short posts in quick succession in large volume is asking for trouble.

Thanks for posting but still I haven't got an accurate answer to my question and please don't concetrate on the posters. I just gave an example.

It has been discussed before briefly in the staff forum but with no concrete answer so I think they should stay for now but it's up to you whether you want to report them or not (just like with poor quality posts - mods opinion of what is spam or useless differs). I think these posts should be discouraged but taken on a case by case basis but when they're spotted (or reported) their other posts should be investigated -  which I usually do - and if the rest of their posts are poor they should be dealt with.

No frustration! ;)

Reporting can do a lot. Yup, you are right! latest posts should also be checked.

@hilariousandco: Thank you! If it's not hard, can you please start a discussion?

Yes I agree with you, but at the end he didn't spam it is only another form of "publication/posting". Everyone try to boost his post count, there are a lot of technique and the spammers will be always banned (just report them).

The person mentioned in the OP has been banned. (RD965)

IMO, MZ, I know it's not your job, but maybe it would be more constructive to send them a PM warning them that they are spamming instead of reporting/creating a thread. I'm pretty sure that these people don't want to hurt the forum, they just are tempted by the big post money bit-x has to offer. I'm pretty sure that they would abide by the warning. If they don't, then they deserve to be banned, and should be reported.

I'd like an opinion from the community about a similar hypothetical situation: Let's say you spent 30 minutes creating, editing, and proof-reading a detailed reply only to find that someone else posted a similar reply that also answered the main points just seconds before you did, would it be best to scrap the post or not?

It would actually be reay helpful to know what is really considered as spam, lately i have seen senior members and hero members get banned for spamming or low quality posts wich is kind of scary

I'm almost certain that he's talking about marcotheminer (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=147773). See the message in his sig.

If the post is significant enough to where it was probably started before the previous reply was posted, I tend to give it a pass, I do look at the post times. Otherwise it does send up a red flag about that poster, and I'll take a closer look.

I have said it earlier. I didn't create this thread to tell about RD965, I gave it as an example. Repeating, "please don't discuss about the person, discuss about the post".

I will try to tell if I find any. I have told a few people but they didn't listen.

Ah, OK thanks. I guess if it ever happened that it wouldn't hurt to edit the post a bit before pressing "post" again - i.e. perhaps add an analogy that might explain things in a better way, etc. so that it brings something new to the discussion.

I have seen members who are warning everyone in the currency exchange section. Same words which are rephrased in every thread. They say PP transactions are reversible and tell the buyer and seller to be careful. My question is that when he/she is not interested in the exchange then why warn to just increase post count?

I think people warning of potential scams - especially ones involving PP - is ok but maybe not if that's all they do and it's obvious why. A user was called out recently for repeatedly just asking if sellers used escrow every-time but I'd take them on a case-by-case basis.
