Farting not only releases the gas, it also relieves the discomfort. So I have now made a connection between the smell of my fart and the discomfort relief. Bad smell + good feeling = bad smell not as bad after all.

I don't think animals enjoy the smell but they sniff it for information and farting only marks your 'territory' for about five seconds until it dissipates. They all thought their own baby's nappy smelt less bad than all the other women's. Your own farts probably work in a similar way.
