It would be a HUGE help if they did this, even just to make bitcoin a credible currency. Any store with the readers, you could use bitcoins. Of course you would probably have to deposit them into a Google account first, and your anonymity is gone, but it creates a way to finally use bitcoins in a brick and mortar store. Considering a Google employee has worked on bitcoin, it shouldn't be too hard to get it implemented. Actually it might be their only chance to really make it a real success.
