Title: Motherboard question
Post by: TradersEdgeDice on May 25, 2011, 04:36:15 PM
I'm looking at the MSI 890FXA-GD70.

Quoth the specs…

PCI Express 2.0 x16: 5 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 (2 x16, 2 x8, 1 x4)

In terms of mining, what do I lose with each additional card?  Do I lose anything at all as I am just hashing with the GPUs?

you will be better off getting a regular board.
the extra high price on that board is just not worth it.

By regular board, do you mean two PCI-e slots?

There are a number of options at $130

Get the board, runs 4 dual slot cards great.

I personally use them and they sell for cheap (for a 5slot which is mostly 4slot since most cards are dual slot)

Can I run 5 cards on there with just 1 PCIe extender?

Also I'd be using 2 PSU and I don't really know how to set it up. Can some one point me in the right direction?

I initially wanted to get 2 rigs with cheap set ups and now am turning to this Mobo for 1 rig with more cards as the savings there justified itself with an extra GPU.

Options for greatest investment:
Windows (currently 4 GPU MAX):
Buy a motherboard with 4 pci-e slots... x1,x4,x16, doesn't matter... you can even get PCI to PCIe adapters, unless you are running a 5970 or 6990 (dual gpu), in which case you only need 2 slots.

Linux (currently 8 GPU max):
repeat windows but double).

I'm not sure how much those PCI-PCIe adapters cost and PCIe extenders cost. Also, I'm not sure if they are available in my local store. I'm heading over there in a few hours to check it out and see if they are available.

If they are does this mean that I could potentially run 8 cards off a cheapass motherboard that have enough slots total for expansion (inc. PCI) ?

Also, I still need to know how to hook up dual PSU. If anyone would please help with this.
