I spent a ridiculous amount of time building/compiling it for mac, so I feel like I should use it.

I tried to make a vanity, I got lost in the coding compiling..   over my head, and no time..

Since no one, as far as I know, have built support for third party generation of vanity addresses without the person generating the address also knowing the private key I'd strongly recommend against doing this. Not only will people need to trust you, if anything happens later they'll most certainly believe you scammed them.

(Did my build instructions for Mac still work or did they need updating?)

edit: Oops, I hadn't read the vanitygen thread recently - I was wrong. It is possible to outsource address generation, but then Coinabul needs to offer to do it that way. It's called "Split key address generation".

It's thinking. I did tfln, since 5 letter will take about 9 hours.

I'll dig up the link but I was told third party generation was solved.

As for the security of this operation... I wouldn't store my savings on this vanity address... Especially since it's travelling over Bitcointalk's private message box. That being said, this is all for fun. Everyone should assume I'm tweeting the private key immediately after sending it you. ;)

I had vanitygen compiled on my Mac laptop...in my downloads folder, which I emptied literally today. I had been meaning to generate a few more in the near future...I remember what a pain it was to compile on a Mac in the first place. I had the ocl version running. The make files didn't work back then...and I don't know make at all.

These will make great demo keys to show people how fast one can turn a Bitcoin into cash. Imagine if the first time you saw Bitcoin, it was by someone logging into Gox, redeeming a private key and selling at market rate...it would be very fast and quite impressive I should think.

Ah, OK.  My cheap XFX 6770 gets around 12-13 Mkey/s with oclvanitygen for your reference.

You want to use oclvanitygen instead to use the GPU. I get 16Mkey/s with a Gtx 560ti.

Or you already know this and are limited by hardware.

There are Windows-built binaries for oclvanitygen floating around the interwebs somewhere.

Ahh, I built ocl separately. That has boosted it up to 200kkey/s

If you have an OpenCL GPU you can use oclvanitygen by adding -d 0 to the command line to use GPU #0 (or whatever)

I don't know anything about Macs.

I just updated my vanitygen to 0.19 so I could try the new third-party mode. It works and I thought I'd post how I used it here. It would be much safer for those wanting to make vanity addresses for others. And it's fairly easy to do.

1. Client who wants vanity goes to bitaddress.org and generates an address/key pair. Save this safely for later. Plug private key into wallet details tab and see that a "hex format public key" is shown on two lines. Send those two lines of hex to the "guy doing vanity gen".

2. Vanity gen guy starts oclvanitygen with -P option and pastes in the given hex key (one line each combining into one long key, it can't handle the line break). Generate the addresses and send to the client. These addresses have only a "partial key" and aren't usable alone.

(note, I found it easier to put the hex key in a file and use a cmd like " oclvanitygen -d 0 -P `cat keyfile` 1Love " which worked fine and allows for automating the process)

3. Client has to plug the partial key and the original key he saved above into keyconv program to give him the full private key. A windows binary of this utility is available on the vanitygen github but for other OS it's a bit of a problem if the client can't compile easily.

eg.
keyconv -c <originalkey> <partialkey>
(outputs new vanity address and full key)

I don't think the client needs the original key after this - as he has a new vanity address/key that works standalone - unless maybe to request more addresses safely.

I requested a partial key sum function on bitaddress.org so this last step could be dead easy too. We'll see.

What would be a typical command line to do this myself?  Im about to tackle this... :D

But that would take forever. Well, ok just 258759000 years on my mahcine.

For GPU:
oclvanitygen -d 0 1Sitonmyface

Ah, much better, only 2819089 years.

The -d 0 option on oclvanitygen just tells it to use the first GPU device.
You can use -i if you don't care about case sensitive.

oclvanitygen -id 0 1Sitonmyface

Which estimates 5678 years. Much more doable.

All these time estimates are based on 50% chance of finding.

I have 3x 5830s here. But this rate was with my mining still going. So it was quoting me about 4 Mkeys/s and when I shutdown mining I can get around 22 Mkeys/s. So factor in about 5x faster if you dedicate the GPU.

ie. on 3 GPU miner dedicated you get this down to 5678 / 5 / 3 = 378 years.

The character length is super critical. Even cutting off one char makes a big impact.

First, what OS are you using? For Windows there is binaries on the vanitygen github so it should be pretty easy to download and just use. For Linux or OSX you'd have to compile I believe. I just did that again after 9 months when I first did it and it's fairly easy/painless.

Use the 64 bit exe in that zip.
First time you run the exe it will compile an OpenCL "kernel" and download it to the GPU to run. But after that it should have saved the file so that further runs will just download it and go. So first time takes a while.

You don't. Each new address also has a new private key. Start with a simple example to see you have done it right,

For CPU: vanitygen64 1Love
For GPU: oclvanitygen -d 0 1Love

That should spit out an address/key pair in a few seconds typically. If it works then you can try longer ones and other options.

You only supply a "hex public key" as input when using -P to generate a partial key for a third party.

Yup. BTC addresses can't contain a lower case "l". And a few other letters too.
I guess you'll have to use 1TefLon.

But once you have an address you can use firstbits.com for a shortened version and it allows using wrong case. I just checked and 1teflon isn't used by anyone yet so if you send a few cents to yourself on that address then you'll own 1teflon.

1Love - ya, lots of them out there. 4 chars is pretty easy to generate quickly.

question.. what if my computer crashes after I find it..   my setup is unstable..  and I have to goto sleep eventually..  got a 12 hour wait it says..

Now I haven't used Windows for years but I do believe it supports redirecting output to a file.

eg.
oclvanitygen -d0 1Love >>vanity.txt

should write the result to that file. I used >> so that result is appended rather than overwrite the file.

If you add the -k option it will keep searching for multiple addresses.

Vanitygen supports file output without any commandline hacks - just use -o file.txt and it will write to a file. If you use the -i arg, it will be case-insensitive, and -k will keep generated results and keep running to find more. By default, it stops after finding one match.
