Title: Use of smileys/emoticons
Post by: ndnh on March 13, 2015, 08:56:22 PM
Well, if a reputed site hires me as a signature manager  ;) , or while sending PMs to a member here, or while making a post, is the use of emoticons or smileys considered appropriate?

Wanted to know how you guys think. Thanks :)

It depends on the circumstances, the subject being discussed and what you're linking the emoticon to. Not everyone likes to see them in serious discussions, but if you don't overuse them you should be okay.

If you're being hired (read: paid) to perform said task, then I suggest very rarely use them so that to come across as professional as possible at all times.

Dang! I use it all the time. :P

I also paid someone as a co-manager and he uses it all the time too.. Still since this is marketing, may be...

Too many can look a bit naive or childish but sometimes they have their place. I would try to avoid them if you can though as you should be able to convey yourself without resorting to using them. Just my opinion.

If you communicate with people as a part of your job you shouldn't use any emoticons. You can use them in some cases when you know the person you are contacting with and you have a nice and friendly relationship. If you are writing something more casual it is okay to use them but everything has its limits, so do not cross them :)

I think the use of emoticons are OK if the PM isn't too formal. If your co-manager uses emoticons all the time, then it should be fine as you are both using emoticons.  :)

They're fine in some posts when they're needed but too many of them or liberal use can maker people seem a bit childish. I wouldn't use them when trying to do business unless the other person does first.

voted okay.

I use them whenever I made a post that can be considered rude/funny/etc. when I'm actually not trying to be rude/funny/etc.

though sometimes I just use them because I want to.

They're awesome. But there are not too many to choose from and I avoid them because they don't always say what I want them to say. And it depends on the topic, if it's a serious topic, best not to use them as that looks unprofessional.

Emoticons are a good gauge of how balanced the person is you are in a discussion with. 3 smiliefaces after every sentence tells me they have been drinking all the liquids from under the sink a little to long.

If I use too many smiles during a convo then I think it would look dumb as hell. :)

But if I do not use many, then my PM may seem like I am being pompus.  ;)

There is always a happy-medium when dealing with such things in life.  8)

Dont forget to  ;)

As long as you use them horrible Kirby emotes, you will come off as a true professional. (>'-')> <('-'<) ^(' - ')^ <('-'<) (>'-')>

Now using them even in my signatures. :D

It does make conversations lighter, and more fun. :)

Excessive spam of smilies really can transform a professional comment into a degraded piece of junk. It just makes it look obnoxious and childish. If it's to poke fun at something, I would only say a maximum of 2-5 smilies per (long) paragraph. Maybe less than that.
