Title: Running a full bitcoin Node.. Sorta
Post by: Icon on March 15, 2015, 01:13:29 AM
So today's question after reading..

http://www.coindesk.com/chainalysis-ceo-denies-launching-sybil-attack-on-bitcoin-network/

If someone like me whose running the latest Bitcoin Qt 24/7 with only 8 connections and not port forwarding, is it contributing to the network in anyway?
IE: Does it help to deciding who is on the orphan block or who's not, or is it just a leach without help securing the bitcoin network at all?

Thanks

The simple answer is no.  The reason we want a large number of nodes is so that it becomes difficult to isolate new nodes (isolation attack).  New nodes are going to establish outbound connections and would not be able to connect to you.  Still even full nodes with inbound connections don't 'decide who is on the orphan block'.
