Title: When to put my order in?
Post by: solareclipse64236 on August 09, 2012, 12:54:31 PM
I got some money in, when do I put my order in for Supercomputer units from BFL? They don't even answer anymore.

So you're going to pay BFL to work on making you a SC unit?

if you are going to take the BFL gamble, the sooner the better, there is a waiting list and it gets longer every day

if you are into gambling
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=89564.0 might be worth a look also :)

I wont be sending BFL a large amount of non-refundable btc anytime soon despite the number of ppl jumping on the bandwagon :)

As with any gamble do not send more money than you can afford to lose :)

Where else would you get supercomputer units?

What is this a rhetorical question?

My purchase was confirmed for an SC on 7/27 and I'm order number 3936. This is really letting it ride. My argument was something like E[return] = 0.01*(crazy profits) + 0.99*(nothing) = still somewhat crazy profits -or- man all this BTC is really burning a whole in my pocket! Realize they may not come through even if they honestly want to.

What did you end up buying?

I'm aiming for a SC Single before October hits

I ended up purchasing the SC Single. As others have said, if you're going to do this, sooner is better than later. Let's say for example that they ship 100 units in the first batch. If you're order number 101, you may have to wait quite awhile to get in on the action and by that time the difficulty will have already adjusted. If these things end up being real, the first people to use them will get a big benefit.

Yeah it is risky, but if these things pan out with production near target, or even half of what target is, people not on the wagon who are mining now are going to be screwed royally.  This will be the only real viable product to mine with, and if rumors are true, everyone and their mother will get one.  Think the wait list is bad now on say a weekly production of 100 units, imagine after they come out and make GPUs paper weights!  GPUs will be worthless with a massive flood on ebay, and have to wait forever to get a ASIC unit.

Even if the hash production is say that of a 5830, still not that bad of a product.  Performance of a 5830 using what is it, 2watts of power and not that much more money.  Plus I can still keep my GPUs and double my hash rate. :-)

From what I have been reading around, I don't get how they can make these available in October when from what I read, that is when the silicon will be shipped to them. Seems like the turn around should be a little longer unless they expect to have zero issues with silicon, pcb, and other components.  Either that, or those first on the top of the list are going to have a higher chance of having a bad unit.

I put an order in for five of the 40GH/s units back when they first announced that they were taking pre-orders.  Now I'm kind of wondering if it was such a good idea.  I could have just bought a bunch of coins at $5-6 instead and sold them for $14-15.  Oh well.

Oh, I also put an order in on 8/12 and my order number is 5078.

Ordered 6 Jalapeno's.

My suggestion for those programmers among us is to keep the GPUs and try to learn how to do general purpose computing with them. It stands to become a pretty marketable skill in the years to come. If markets still exist in the years to come that is.
