Title: Lost Password To 106 BTC, Encrypted Wallet [BOUNTY]
Post by: BumbleBeeTC on March 22, 2015, 12:54:34 AM
Am I fucked? I had it like this: I use Multibit, but my wallet is encrypted with a 16 character passcode, randomly generated. This pass was saved in a text file on my external HDD. I was ratted, and now the file was deleted. As well, I think my HDD was formatted :( it isn't recognized at all

I don't remember even the first character. Maybe it was a c or f, I don't know :(. I'll offer a big bounty, maybe 6 BTC to whoever can help unlock my wallet. I read about this (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=85495.msg941818#msg941818) but I can't make any sense of it :(

i like this app very much: https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover

you supply it with parts of the password you remember and it tries variants.
i can help you set it up if you need to.

if you search this forum there are also services which are able to do this trustless. they usually ask 10-20% of the wallet amount.

BE SURE TO USE A TRUSTLESS SERVICE never send just your complete wallet.dat with passwor hints!

if you dont remember anything from your password and if its complex you are fucked...

Bumblebee is an alt of Homosexual / Candystripes. (Pretty damn sure)

You're an admitted minor hanging about a 18+ gambling site.

Now you are trying to get some poor sap to crack someone elses wallet.. *shakes head*

Brute forcing that password would be virtually impossible.
Did you re-write the hard drive with new data? If you didn't then you may use specialized SW to recover the files. Or you can hire a professional.
You do have the wallet don't you? Just missing the password? Or was the wallet gone on the HD too?

From what I know, its totally possible to recover the data from any formatted drive (There are many apps around) unless you intentionally wiped data in some irreversible way or extreme hardware deterioration. If you are trying to hack into some1 wallet, 16 characters? You need alot of hashing power to bruteforce something like that(not even the whole bitcoin+altcoins network hashrates combined would be enough) anyway I rather use such hashing power to mine my own coins, not worth that amount of BTC.

So what?

Now that's different.... luckily:

if you dont remember anything from your password and if its complex you are fucked...

and

Brute forcing that password would be virtually impossible.

Agreed: if OP is a thief, or if OP doesn't have any idea of what the password is, then nothing can help.

You forgot to tell us something very important, your password generator, which charset it use?

Doesn't much matter.... even if it's lower-case ASCII characters only, that's still 2616 possible passwords; over 43 trillion billion, putting it far out of reach of any recovery / brute-forcing tool....

If the HDD was formatted best bet is to try and recover from the HDD itself..

I and some others on the forums do this professionally, may be best to send it for an attempted recovery... Whatever you do stop using the disk ASAP as any use risks destroying recoverable data...

Upload a 1:1 backup of your HDD without altering anything in it.

I agree, I'm quite sure he's going after this PD user's wallet:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2yf2nt/are_these_your_1031607744_bitcoins/

Naturally, he has no idea what the possible passcode is much like the other 100 would-be thieves attempting to crack it. All we can do is hope that the owner of this wallet has a secure password.

Wow, that's sad :(

Hopefully that user can transfer his coins to another secure address soon.

It is sad, but you really should be careful on who you send a wallet to even for recovery.

That being said most likely it has a secure password and no one is getting anything out of it, is my guess.

Its so simple. Don't be worry.
If was in your place i'll camly use 'i care data recovery' and i'll recover all my deleted data to another HDD or may be my PC's another drive. Then find that text document and open it.
Some good recovery softwares:
1. I care data recovery, (most recommender for formated HDD/partition/drive recovery)
2. Recuva,
3. Tune up, (recommended for deleted file recovery)
4. Wise care data recovery.

Wait...wait...wait...
Formatted HDD can still be recover
I suggest you to not use that HDD for now, till you can recover it
Because if you use the HDD too much, the file will be struck down and can't be recover.

Offer up a reward % for it I'm sure someone would be interested in helping. Do you remember how long the password was?

... usualy it's something around 15% to 20% of the recovered wallet  8)

It is 12 letters. Second thing is that I used random string generator, with both Lower, upper, numeric,... So bruteforce would be only way, but on so large password I doubt it would be worth trying.

I think anything more than 9 characters is considered pretty strong. I don't have any experience with this (or the raw power needed) but I think it's going to be hard. Hope someone can help you or that you're lucky enough to find the password again.

(26 lowercase + 26 uppercase + 10 digits) ^ 12 = over 3 thousand billion billion permutations (for comparison, that's somewhere around the number of grains of sand on planet Earth). If it was in fact generated randomly, it's completely unbruteforcible.

I think anything more than 9 characters is considered pretty strong.

It's somewhere around there, but it depends on the details. For example, if it was only lowercase letters and 10 letters long, and if it was for a wallet that doesn't use key stretching (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_stretching) (e.g. MultiBit Classic, Electrum), then it would cost me somewhere around $2,500 - $3,500 USD in compute resources & power to brute force, and it could be done in a few weeks. It might be even cheaper to create specialized software that'd run faster and cost less to run, but that's harder to estimate.
