Title: Replied to a private message, no record of it
Post by: HeavyMetal on August 11, 2012, 05:23:12 PM
I got a private message concerning a transaction. I replied with a detailed response. When I was done posting it I saw no record of my reply in my inbox/outbox, however the original message now says "You have forwarded or responded to this message."

Why can't I see the message I sent? I don't remember all of the details of what I sent(like the last two decimals in the price etc) and assumed the forum would keep a record of my reply.

I am thinking perhaps it needs to be indexed before being shown and thus a delay? Can anyone else who has experienced this give me a hint as to what to expect? Did my reply get through, will I be able to read it one day?

No, the PM system on this forum kind of blows

I am glad they are working on replacing it then. I assumed there would be a record of our discussion and am a bit irked. I will have to use a text editor to keep a record of communication in the future.

There is an option to save outgoing pms in your profile. It doesn't save them by default though.

The PM system does kind of blow though, should be threaded.

Grrr, why would such a thing default to off? I have turned it on thank you for the tip. Hopefully the recipient of my message can quote me in his/her response.

I appreciate the quick and useful replies.

Most users of any software never change the default settings (a good many don't even know there are settings). This is why Windows get pwnd on the regular. it defaults to very loose security.

Changing the default to saving the message would resolve this whole thing.

I suspect that they have it defaulting to off so avoid storing too many messages. Otherwise defaulting to off makes no sense at all.

If the forum is properly designed, no extra messages need to be stored. You can send the same message to thousands of people while storing only one copy, so saving a copy is just really sending the message to yourself as well.

Under Profile -> message settings you can enable it so that it always saves your messages in the outbox. Otherwise you'll have to manually click 'save a copy' each time.
