There's just way too much that can go wrong and this is hardly a walk in the park.

He's going to place the flag at 5,000 meters which is really no where near the top. I think the idea is cool if he made it all the way to the top to plant it and would come with a certain amount of infamy within the bitcoin community. Regarding the flag, we should of been notified at least 3 months before so we could of at least put something together like putting funds together to create a decent looking flag. We could've also received sponsorships from major bitcoin related companies/websites, maybe even the foundation could help out here. All in all, it's still something, we should be grateful they put in something to actually get outside and do something unlike us who just sit in front of our computers staring at the forum.
