Title: Bytecoin Roadmap (including CryptoNote protocol updates)
Post by: Ullo on March 31, 2015, 12:28:28 PM
Edit (04 July, 2015): Updated roadmap description up to version 1.1.1
Edit (13 July, 2015): Updated roadmap description, split version 1.0.6 and added new features to 1.0.7

Today is March 31th 2015, which is the 1001st day of Bytecoin's existence, and we are honored to present our new website (http://bytecoin.org/) and Bytecoin development roadmap (http://bytecoin.org/roadmap/) for 2015.

On the anniversary (http://bytecoin.org/blog/d1000) of Bytecoin, we have launched a new website, which embodies our philosophy of reliability and convenience. We continue to gradually implement our mission (http://bytecoin.org/mission) and create a new efficient financial system that would enhance the classical one.

We are making considerable efforts to help in building the new economy, and doing our best to make the world of tomorrow differ from the world of today. Such grand task as changing the economical paradigm requires assistance not only from cryptographers and programmers, but from specialists in social fields, like economists, lawyers and sociologists, as well. These people are the ones who mostly help in creating a cryptocurrency not for itself, but cryptocurrency for other people, for the world.

The presence of large number of teams and ideas that they implement increases possibility for the new economy to be really new. It means that it would not be the 20th century economy + the Internet, but rather a brand new Economy: a system that has never existed before, the one that creates new patterns for people interaction in virtual reality.

And we are making our own contribution to this new economy. A reliable cryptocurrency is a must, but it is not enough. After developing the Bytecoin Core we moved our focus to creating the add-ons that would be convenient for users and businessmen, for all those who will create the new economy by becoming a part of it!

Welcome to the new Bytecoin website:

Bytecoin Roadmap

Bytecoin software is presented with two development branches, Bytecoin Reference Client and Bytecoin Wallet. The first one refers to the original CryptoNote (https://cryptonote.org) console daemon and simplewallet binaries, while the latter is the graphical wallet for end-users. Bytecoin Wallet roadmap depends on Bytecoin Reference Client features, so versioning is the same for both Bytecoin branches.

Here is the visual representation of Bytecoin roadmap. The features are briefly covered below. One thing to mention, these are not some vague plans scheduled for 2050; every feature mentioned in this post is being either researched or developed actively. We aim to significantly improve CryptoNote protocol and give birth to broad ecosystem on top of Bytecoin network.

The majority of the updates has been discussed with CryptoNote team members to ensure that our work is aligned with their philosophy and vision. However, it is completely up to them to decide which of them should be included into CryptoNote's official codebase and become part of CryptoNote's core features.

There are going to be more great features coming out this year. It's high time CryptoNote technology become more user-friendly to ultimately drive mass adoption to the platform and all CryptoNote currencies. Even though the cryptographic protocol behind CryptoNote's anonymous transactions is well-tested and robust, there is still a lot of work ahead. That is why Bytecoin team puts a lot of effort to make whole CryptoNote ecosystem reach a radically new level.

You may follow the progress on Bytecoin website (http://bytecoin.org/roadmap/). The page is going to be updated with each Bytecoin release.

https://bytecoin.org/static/img/bytecoin-roadmap.png

v.1.0.3

Low-level API for ordinary and multisig transactions

Bytecoin low-level API interface provides 3rd party developers with a flexible access to CryptoNote transactions engine. It covers CryptoNote's core functions that allow to create, validate, sign, and broadcast any kind of transaction including multisig.

Instant transaction notification

With this feature CryptoNote transactions become real-time. When Alice broadcasts her newly created Bytecoin transaction to Bob, his wallet will immediately recognize it and update Bob's pending balance before the transaction is included in the blockchain.

Simplewallet migration to high-level API

Legacy simplewallet code is completely re-written with the new high-level API libraries. This allows new Bytecoin simplewallet to process blocks and transactions 20% faster. It also acts as a showcase for Bytecoin high-level API for wallets. As for the user experience, it still the same CryptoNote wallet you're all used to, with a whole new engine under its hood.

In-process INode for applications

INode interface is Bytecoin's high-level API library that provides network node functionality. Its in-process implementation allows to launch an instance of Bytecoin daemon inside any C++ application. As an example, it allows Bytecoin Wallet to run a native network node. What's more, if you have a local Bytecoin daemon running, INode will connect to it rather than create a new in-app instance. This update marks the start of Bytecoin lightweight wallet development, a long-awaited feature in CryptoNote ecosystem.

Bytecoin GUI Wallet

Bytecoin team has designed an elegant graphic wallet. Bytecoin Wallet is much more than just a user-friendly implementation of simplewallet's functions. Our team has spent months prototyping, running A/B tests, and focus groups. The result is the well-polished application focused on user experience.

v.1.0.4

E-commerce solution designed for highload

Bytecoin e-commerce solution offers a new integration scheme for businesses that operate with Bytecoin. It is a robust demonized RPC Wallet that is capable of receiving and sending thousands transactions simultaneously. Designed for highload, Bytecoin RPC Wallet meets the requirements of the most sophisticated business cases.

Daemon refactoring and optimization

The data serialization code among various CryptoNote components is significantly updated. This feature improves Bytecoin code maintainability and is extremely important for future updates. It enhances CryptoNote code modularity and allows Bytecoin team to tremendously increase software test coverage.

Improved console logging

Bytecoin logging module is largely updated and standardized, both in daemon and simplewallet.

Color themes

This update provides Bytecoin users with a new set of color themes for Bytecoin Wallet. Even though our main focus is hardcore protocol features, we believe it's time for CryptoNote to become more user-friendly.

v.1.0.5

Network-wide real-time transactions synchronization

This feature allows Bytecoin nodes to synchronize the transaction pools (transactions that are not in blocks yet) network-wide. It improves network stability by addressing multiple sophisticated cases for newly created transactions. It also lays ground for the upcoming transfer features.

High-level API for blockchain explorer

This API interface provides Bytecoin blockchain explorer functionality for any C++ application. It further decentralizes Bytecoin's infrastructure allowing anyone to easily implement block explorers.

New network library

The network layer is being migrated to a new library. Unlike epee library that has been used previously, the new solution makes node's behavior more predictable in runtime. This update splits network and worker threads and is a pre-requisite for multi-threading behavior optimization.

In-wallet blockchain explorer

A native blockchain explorer is coming right to your Bytecoin Wallet. It improves user experience, since all you may need to know about Bytecoin is already in your wallet.

In-wallet miner

An in-wallet miner is a long-awaited feature for Bytecoin Wallet. It simplifies mining in pools for average users and allows to start getting Bytecoins with a few clicks right in your wallet.

v.1.0.6

Multiple wallet addresses

Multiple wallet addresses is a secure scheme for payment identification. Implemented in Bytecoin RPC Wallet, it takes payment processing to a whole new level. It may well be the largest update to CryptoNote cryptographic protocol since 2012.

v.1.0.7

New transaction priority rules

This feature is a major improvement of transaction rules for Bytecoin network. It reserves a part of each block for specific zero-fee transactions. The latter are likely to emerge as a result of micro-donation protocol implementation and in case a large amount of tiny inputs is involved.

Transactions inputs optimization

As a result of new transaction priority rules introduction, Bytecoin Wallet is capable of optimizing your wallet funds. In a process similar to good old defragmentation, tiny inputs are joined into a smaller number of larger outputs. This is a significant improvement of the CryptoNote protocol, which will be covered in a our new whitepaper.

Tracking key import/export

The access to your Bytecoin wallet address is based on two private keys: tracking key and spending key. The former allows any party to learn your balance and all financial operations. This update extends the transparency-on-demand core feature and introduces a user-friendly way to export your tracking key or import the keys provided by other parties.

8-bit color theme

A taste of good old 8-bit style is coming to our elegant Bytecoin Wallet. This color theme is a tribute to the old Bytecoin website.

v.1.0.8

Instant transaction notifications through proxy INode

Instant transaction notification is coming to the proxying node module. The latter is the INode interface implementation for the wallet to work with the remote daemon. This is an important step towards lightweight wallets.

v.1.0.9

External keys for Bytecoin RPC Wallet

This update substantially extends Bytecoin RPC Wallet functionality allowing third party developers to securely pass private keys of the wallets to its API interface. This is a major feature that improves Bytecoin out-of-box security for various web applications.

Transaction comments

Transaction comments provide a functionality to enclose any message to the transaction that you are sending. Its content is going to be encrypted, stored in blockchain, and available only for the recipient.

Invoices

Invoices are a usability enhancement for Bytecoin Wallet. They allow merchants and services to send an invoice directly to the user's wallet. Therefore, payment for the end-users is simplified to just a couple of clicks required to accept the invoice.

v.1.1.0

On-blockchain alias

Bytecoin team aims to give on-blockchain aliases a new perspective allowing you to create aliases for basically whatever you want.

v.1.1.1

P2P layer refactoring

This update isolates p2p and cryptocurrency protocols to further improve testability, modularity, and reliability. This update allows to create any p2p project on top of Bytecoin's network layer.

Higher daemon synchronization speed

The ambitious goal is to improve the speed of daemon synchronization from scratch by 500%. After this update there will be no need to distribute blockchain files, since there will be no time difference between synchronizing with the network and downloading blockchain from a server.

Higher block relay speed

The updated P2P layer allows to polish the way the blocks are relaid across the network. It ensures that all Bytecoin nodes are synchronized with just a neglectable delay.

Various work in progress

Full daemon refactoring

Another significant daemon refactoring that improves code modularity. It also increases blocks and transactions processing speed by roughly 15%.

Lightweight wallet

Lightweight wallets are able to operate with any network daemon that has allowed external applications access, and exchange wallet peerlists. They minimize the resource requirements and allow Bytecoin wallet to run on a large variety of platforms.

Colored coins and assets

Colored coins are the next big thing in cryptocurrencies and is the next significant step for CryptoNote. They will allow Bytecoin users to create and distribute various securities and digital assets.

Alerts

Alerts are a handy feature to ensure that all Bytecoin network nodes are notified on software updates and important notes from the Bytecoin developers.

SOCKS-proxy for wallet

Native SOCKS-proxy support for Bytecoin wallets connected to remote daemons.

P2P pools

With all the updates mentioned above we expect Bytecoin network to significantly increase. P2P pool is a temporary sidechain that implements decentralized pooled mining, which is important for network decentralization.

Turing-complete language for on-blockchain scripts

This update is on the early prototype stages. We aim to provide a brand new Turing-complete language and an interpreter capable of powering CryptoNote's smart contracts.

Looks inspiring. Seems like Bytecoin has started to shift from just another altcoin into a real long-range project like bitshares, litecoin, nxt and others. I guess it's important for the further development of bytecoin and cryptocurrencies on the whole. I'm gonna follow your further actions, guys. Good luck.

Bytecoin back in business. :)

It was long awaited. Good to see Bytecoin and CryptoNote develop further.

You're saying "back" like it was missing. The website was updated, so I think it was a matter of time until the devs come up with an update. But this roadmap is just awesome. I've always believed that BCN devs are going to come up with something like this. After all, the people standing behind CryptoNote implementation could not have stopped at what they've acheived previously.

I'm really looking forward to the new GUI. Of course, I've got quite used to the old school console, but it's 2015 already.

No, seriously, until todays' newsletter there haven't been any big news for quite some time.

Btw, new website is pretty damn awesome. Actually, all Bytecoin website were awesome, is there a gallery of some sort? :D

Hey guys, the first ever CryptoNote GUI was made by DarkNote devs! Ok. Boolberry may be. But still. You are so excited about GUI wallet like it's the most important feature for the cryptocurrency.
To be honest I'm more impressed by the following things:

Payment gateway designed for highload

Bytecoin payment gateway offers a new integration scheme for businesses that accept Bytecoin. If Bytecoin team develop them all Bytecoin will be the most advanced CryptoNote implementation (I'm sad to tell it, but, yes, even more advanced than XDN). All these technical solutions are very important for CryptoNote and CryptoNpte-inspired projects, so thanks, Bytecoiners, and good luck.

By the way, I wonder what are the differences between old low-level API and up-coming lowlevel API?

I have to agree, it does look promising. Bytecoin future completely depends on how well and how fast BCN developers are going to release updates.

Some great ideas can be discussed for years, but the world will never see them implemented. Look at the Ethereum for example, I've put quite a pile of money in it and release is delayed once more.

All these things that Bytecoin developers has announced are very difficult to implement. Colored coins for that matter... Ullo, Bytecoin team already have a vision on how to implement this or ? Will it look like NXT, Mastercoin implementation or Bytecoin are going to present whole new solution since it's CryptoNote based?

Nice to see a future road map with upcoming features. (A GUI wallet was very well due I believe)
Now it just remains to be seen how well and how fast these features are implemented.

Good luck!
Btw, new website is pretty damn awesome. Actually, all Bytecoin website were awesome, is there a gallery of some sort? :D
At last! Is that the GUI preview on the main page? It looks cute!

Thank you for the kind words! We will do our best to deliver the promised features.

By the way, I wonder what are the differences between old low-level API and up-coming lowlevel API?

...

Any new methods? Where may I see them now (wiki/documentations)?

Previously, only the high-level API interfaces were available, including INode and IWallet. They provided access to all the Bytecoin features, but lacked flexibility. It was impossible to interfere with the way the transaction was created or signed. That is what the purpose of low-level API is, as it splits one "create transaction" method into a group of lower level ones. What's more, the multisig API was not previously available.

The documentation is hosted on Bytecoin wiki (https://wiki.bytecoin.org). However, we are going to significantly update it with the next release.

The Bytecoin GUI wallet is unavailable for download now, it will be released together with version 1.0.3 at the beginning of April, as noted in the description.
I guess everyone's waiting for quite a while already. It's a good thing that Bytecoin developers uncovered the annual plan, there are some major updates awaiting us ahead.

The page is going to be updated with each Bytecoin release.

http://bytecoin.org/static/img/bytecoin-roadmap.png

The result is the well-polished application focused on user experience.

v.1.0.4

Payment gateway designed for highload

Bytecoin payment gateway offers a new integration scheme for businesses that accept Bytecoin. It is a robust daemonized wallet that is capable of receiving and sending thousands Bytecoin transactions simultaneously. Designed for highload, payment gateway is 50 times faster than simplewallet and meets the requirements of the most sophisticated business cases that may emerge on top of CryptoNote.

Even though our main focus is hardcore protocol features, we believe it's time for CryptoNote to become more user-friendly.

v.1.0.5

Multiple wallet addresses

Multiple wallet addresses is a secure scheme for CryptoNote transactions identification. Implemented in payment gateway, it takes payment processing to a whole new level. It may well be the largest update to CryptoNote cryptographic protocol since 2012.

New network library

CryptoNote network layer is being migrated to a new library. Unlike epee library that has been used previously in all CryptoNote currencies, the new solution makes node's behavior much more predictable in runtime. This update splits CryptoNote network and worker threads and is a prerequisite for further multi-threading behavior optimization.

Network-wide real-time transactions synchronization

This feature allows Bytecoin nodes to synchronize their transaction pools (transactions that are not in blocks yet) network-wide. It improves network stability by addressing multiple sophisticated cases for newly created CryptoNote transactions. It also lays ground for the upcoming transfer features.

High-level API for blockchain explorer

This API interface provides Bytecoin blockchain explorer functionality for any C++ application. It further decentralizes Bytecoin's infrastructure allowing anyone to easily implement block explorers reducing the dependence on other CryptoNote service providers.

In-wallet blockchain explorer

A native blockchain explorer is coming right to your Bytecoin Wallet. It simplifies user experience, since all you may wish to know about Bytecoin is already in your wallet.

Various work in progress

Full daemon refactoring

This is another significant daemon refactoring that improves CryptoNote code modularity. It also increases blocks and transactions processing speed by roughly 15%.

Instant transaction notifications through proxy INode

Instant transaction notification is coming to the proxying node module. The latter is the INode interface implementation for wallets to work with remote daemons. This is an important step towards Bytecoin lightweight wallet.

On-blockchain alias

Bytecoin team aims to give on-blockchain aliases a new perspective allowing you to create aliases for basically whatever you want.

P2P layer refactoring

This update isolates CryptoNote p2p and cryptocurrency protocols to further improve testability, modularity, and reliability. This update allows to create any p2p project on top of CryptoNote's network layer.

Daemon synchronization speed x10

The ambitious goal is to improve the speed of Bytecoin daemon synchronization from scratch by 1000%. After this update there will be no need to distribute blockchain files, since there will be no time difference between synchronizing with the network and downloading blockchain from a server. This is the greatest CryptoNote technology speed optimization of all times.

Block relay speed x5

The updated CryptoNote p2p layer allows to polish the way the blocks are relaid across Bytecoin network. We expect block propagation speed to increase by the factor of 5.

They will allow Bytecoin users to create and distribute various CryptoNote securities and digital assets.

Alerts
Alerts are a handy feature to ensure that all Bytecoin network nodes are notified on software updates and important notes from Bytecoin developers.

In line with CryptoNote's philosophy it decreases the dependence on large mining pools.

Turing-complete language for on-blockchain scripts
This update is on the early prototype stages. We aim to provide a brand new Turing-complete language and an interpreter capable of powering CryptoNote's smart contracts.

Firstly, it was "to the Mars" to be precise:

Secondly, Bytecoin is a breakthrough coin already. For one thing, it is the first of all the CryptoNote currencies; Bytecoin team implemented CryptoNote's source code itself. And now they're offering something that almost nobody else seems to be capable of. Smart contracts are huge if you ask me.

I believe so far this is the greatest cryptocurrency news in 2015. The strategy is solid. Firstly, the user experience is simplified with GUI wallet. Second, a lot of work on code quality and, seamingly, re-usability is done. Third, robust merchant solution should further drive adoption. Fourth, tons of refactoring to ensure performance. And, finally, more awesome features.

I wonder the timeframe though.

I wonder, in case of double-spend attempt or transaction cancelation how will the wallet react? My question stands for GUI version also.

Okay look. The simplest situation: user has received block reward, but this block went to the alternative chain. It is an ordinary situation and pools may encounter it.

What will I see in my wallet in this situation?

Common, don’t beat yourself up, I suppose Bytecoin devs expected this. In that situation most likely
1) wallet balance will change and
2) this transaction will be erased from the history.

That would make sense.

There are some people already working on smart contracts. Ethereum will be launched very soon. Of course, a larger number of platforms are good for competition.

However, Bytecoin is nowhere close to be the first here unless they rollout scripts this week. Which I highly doubt.

I need to buy much more bytecoins right now. Besides, what about deadlines? What date is going to be the 1.0.3 version? I’m eager to have a look on first GUI wallet in CryptoNote ecosystem.
... You are so excited about GUI wallet like it's the most important feature for the cryptocurrency...

Of course wallets don’t matter this much. But payment gateway definitely does. I mean, this is huge thing for services/businesses/etc. Now exchanges, shops and any other projects could easily accept Bytecoin and other CryptoNote coins. This does matter.

I just haven’t got it how exactly this would work? Something like CoinPayments or what? How quickly can I implement this on my website, for example?

Bytecoin payment gateway will be based on the Bytecoin reference client source code. After compilation you well get a new binary in addition to bytecoind and simplewallet that you already should know. You will be able to control the gateway through JSON RPC interface. Its methods are going to be provided with the payment gateway release.

Hi!

I see a lot of work done be Bytecoin team toward CryptoNote platform improvement. Good for CryptoNote. There is a number of negative points I want to mention now:

1. Bytecoin wiki is really outdated. I hope that new interfaces will be properly documented before being released.

2. "Payment gateway designed for highload" sounds good but looks to be premature because there is no any highload even in Bitcoin traffic. Does this mean that developers are aware about forthcoming sources of highload? If "no", efforts are probably wasted. Good GUI is much more important now.

3. "Network-wide real-time transactions synchronization" ... really? How does Bytecoin now without it?

4. Simple tools and guides for merchant integration (not for highload and sophisticated scenarios but firstly for lowload and simple ones) are very important but aren't mentioned in OP. Why?

Nevertheless this is an important move from Bytecoin team.

INode's description that you quote is pretty self-explanatory. INode is a high-level API interface that has been introduced back in Bytecoin v.0.8.11. Basically, it is a C++ library that is capable of everything the CryptoNote network node should do. It can be used for other applications to replace bytecoind daemon running in the background and have everything inside one app. You may read more about the methods on our wiki but keep in mind that whole API section is going to be updated with the next release: https://wiki.bytecoin.org/wiki/High_level_Node_API

Actually it is not outdated, as it corresponds to the current technology. However, it requires restructuring and cleanup. Wiki update is scheduled for the next Bytecoin release. We will keep it updated.

It's better to say that we're getting rid of a potential bottleneck. There are some things that should be better done beforehand.

3. "Network-wide real-time transactions synchronization" ... really? How does Bytecoin now without it?

I guess this one might be actually misleading. We're going to make transactions pool synchronized across all daemons. At the moment it is possible for Bytecoin daemons to have different transaction in tx pool (transactions not yet included in the blockchain). We believe that it is important for the daemons to have their pools fully synchronized as it helps solve a number of issues.

Why not make the same feature for GUI wallet?

Why do we need that? Wallet is a wallet, just a GUI. I highly doubt that you will send thousands of transactions in a minute using GUI wallet.

Color themes

This update provides Bytecoin users with a new set of color themes for Bytecoin Wallet. Even though our main focus is hardcore protocol features, we believe it's time for CryptoNote to become more user-friendly.

Would it be possible to make custom color themes for the GUI wallet? I remember good all days when everybody was so proud to develop their own IM-client builds (like Miranda and others) with featured skins. It was cool. I think I have a couple of good ideas for new Bytecoin GUI.

Also, why did you decided to add blockchain explorer into the wallet? Isn't it too complicated?

Of course wallets don’t matter this much. But payment gateway definitely does. I mean, this is huge thing for services/businesses/etc. Now exchanges, shops and any other projects could easily accept Bytecoin and other CryptoNote coins. This does matter.

I just haven’t got it how exactly this would work? Something like CoinPayments or what? How quickly can I implement this on my website, for example?

There are two issues that your question raises. As of version 1.0.4 there will be three different wallet implementations for Bytecoin: simplewallet (largely re-written), GUI wallet, and payment gateway. All three are powered with the same IWallet and INode interfaces, so their network performance will be exactly the same.

The difference is in REST adaptor that is used by 3rd party services to process transactions (e.g. check deposits, pay out withdrawals). Currently simplewallet can process up to 200 simultaneous transactions, while payment gateway will be capable of processing up to 10,000 txs at the same time. We expect payment gateway to become the primary wallet for businesses, as it should be much more convenient than simplewallet in this case. Creating such a sophisticated REST adaptor is not a trivial task, and we do not see any need in the same functionality for simplewallet.

Actually, it would be pretty good to make a special blog for bytecoin where developers will comment on what is happening.

You can use the IRC Freenode channel #bytecoin-dev and the technical discussion thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=718834. Here you can ask any questions about Bytecoin development. And you can write to Bytecoin support (support@bytecoin.org).
Developer's blog coming soon.

Come on, Jypsi. You know how it is important for a user to be able to see tx hash and to know if his transaction was included in the block or not. In DarkNote GUI we made it possible to open chainradar service in one click, but it's still too far from the ideal solution. I always feel myself a bit disappointed, when chainradar.com loading starts in the new browser window (unexpectedly!) after clicking TX hash in XDN wallet "history" section. Bytecoin devs try to do it in a user-friendly way. Being user-friendly is good.

It is good to see that not only Bytecoin is developing but also a technology that it's based on. I think it's a bit questionable that Bytecoin and CryptoNote exist apart. I mean, people who develop Bitcoin technology are also developing coin...

Also, is it possible to join Bytecoin team? I would love to be a part of the team. I mean I would love to help but I need to know what is done. You have a great looking roadmap and probably a development plan. Can I take a look?

We are open to anyone who is willing to contribute and help us develop new awesome features for users and ecosystem. If you seriously consider giving us a hand, just send us an email at contact@bytecoin.org, or PM amjuarez on github. I guess there are still plenty of things to work on.

Very interesting Bytecoin update. Roadmap is more than impressive, I hope you will be able to develop all of this. When the first update will be published?

In-process INode for applications

INode interface is Bytecoin's high-level API library that provides network node functionality. Its in-process implementation allows to launch an instance of Bytecoin daemon inside any C++ application. As an example, it allows Bytecoin Wallet to run a native network node. What's more, if you have a local Bytecoin daemon running, INode will connect to it rather than create a new in-app instance. This update marks the start of Bytecoin lightweight wallet development, a long-awaited feature in CryptoNote ecosystem.

I guess INode is something new. Could you explain in more detail? Where could I find it on the website? Actually, it would be pretty good to make a special blog for bytecoin where developers will comment on what is happening.

Is it easy to implement INode to other CryptoNote currencies?

New network library

CryptoNote network layer is being migrated to a new library. Unlike epee library that has been used previously in all CryptoNote currencies, the new solution makes node's behavior much more predictable in runtime. This update splits CryptoNote network and worker threads and is a prerequisite for further multi-threading behavior optimization.

How important is this new library? Doesn't epee work fine? As far as I understand, epee is in the very core of CryptoNote. Wouldn't changing it affect a lot of other components?

My concern is that this should imply tremendous work, which can take a lot of time. Since it belongs to 1.0.5 release, does it imply that we're going to wait quite long for it be rolled out?

Is it easy to implement INode to other CryptoNote currencies?

INode can be theoretically implemented in other CryptoNotes. However, it depends on the coins' developers whether it will actually be the case.

Epee is a great library but it doesn't fit in with our understanding of how Bytecoin core should operate. Unfortunately, I'm not ready to provide any further technical information at the moment, as this piece of work is far from being finished. What I can assure of is that we will do our best to implement this and every other mentioned feature as fast as possible.

Bytecoin? The one currently trading at five satoshis on Polo?

Colored coins and assets
Colored coins are the next big thing in cryptocurrencies and is the next significant step for CryptoNote. They will allow Bytecoin users to create and distribute various CryptoNote securities and digital assets.

What's the rough ETA on this? More importantly: will the buying and selling of Assts be obfuscated on the blockchain? Would anyone be able to find out what Assets a Bytecoin holder buys and sells?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, we are not ready to provide you even with a rough ETA, since the work is currently in progress.

As to your question regarding obfuscating of buying and selling, transactions are going to be as anonymous as ordinary transactions, the only difference is that users will be able too see the "color" of input or output in blockchain but funds will still be untraceable. Please note that you can mix outputs that has the same "color" or no "color" at all.

In other words, the only thing you will be able to analyze with help of blockchain explorer is which "color" or asset is the most popular among Bytecoin blockchain.

Another thing worth mentioning is that "colored" coin emission can’t be mixed because there is nothing you can mix it with.

I've meant the process of issuing an asset. Transfers are still anonymous as long as you can mix your funds with other outputs.

CryptoNote assets would be amazing!! If only there wasn't the bad 'smell' around the ~80% premine.

That premine could be a blessing in disguise if it were used to subsidize people who issue and maintain Assets like Bitshares': Assets tied to others.

What you describe here is just one use case of assets. We pursue the vision that Bytecoin assets can be backed by the underlying asset, or may not be. Digital assets also largely increase the power of smart contracts as they can represent basically any digital token.

i see two different kind of assets:
1) other currencies like usd or commodities like gold. in this case i'd prefer a trustless peg (if possible at all - not seen until now)
2) share in a company: in this case you have to trust someone (eg the company itself). so i dont think there is a need for a trustless peg.

if someone figures out a way to back an asset which resides on the blockchain (in a trustless way) i'd certainly use it ;)

afaik 2 is planned and i am fully ok with it (even bitcoin itself can handle them by using colored coins). number one is the interesting and complex one

Bytecoin Reference Client v.1.0.3 released.
Bytecoin GUI Wallet is coming out later this week.
Bytecoin Wiki (https://wiki.bytecoin.org/) has been largely updated.

In the meantime you may check out our Bytecoin: Under the Hood (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1014221.0) post where I explain our technology vision and give overview of what has been achieved so far.

More details on v.1.0.3 Reference Client release

http://bytecoin.org/static/img/bytecoin-roadmap.png

In-process INode implementation for applications

INode is the high-level API interface that allows any application to utilize core features of Bytecoin p2p network. Its new implementation provides a full-fledged network node inside any C++ application. It also largely standardizes codebase and powers Bytecoin GUI Wallet, which is coming out later this week.

Low-level ITransaction API interface for ordinary and multisig transactions

Bytecoin low-level API interface provides 3rd party developers with a flexible access to CryptoNote transactions engine. It gives access to core functions that allow to create, validate, sign, and broadcast a transaction. It also provides multisig access.

This update is aimed for wallet and multisig applications developers. Bytecoin low-level API provides full control of CryptoNote transactions technology allowing you to select specific inputs of a transaction. It also gives tools to utilize multi-signature protocol and create such products as native escrow and M-of-N board wallets.

Instant transactions notification

With this feature Bytecoin transactions become real-time. When Alice broadcasts her newly created Bytecoin transaction to Bob, his wallet will immediately recognize it and update Bob's balance before the transaction is included in the blockchain. This is achieved through IWallet API interface that subscribes to all the transactions of the node it is connected to and instantly recognizes the transactions sent to you.

Simplewallet migration to high-level API

Legacy simplewallet code has been migrated to the new high-level API libraries. Even though simplewallet remains the same from the user perspective, everything under its hood is completely redesigned. This update is the showcase and reference implementation of Bytecoin high-level IWallet interface. Simplewallet operates through proxying INode interface only, so it still requires a running daemon.

What kind of implementation of trustless peg (especially for gold and fiat) do you mean?
We're going to provide a technology letting other parties emit various types of currencies. We're not going to emit a bitUSD analog oursleves, but we should not prohibit creating one in theory. Do you think we need to?

As for the company shares, we do share your vision. In this case its company trust that we're talking about, so no need to have it backed by an underlying asset.

What kind of implementation of trustless peg (especially for gold and fiat) do you mean?

Now that opens up a can of worms! I've been watching the gold market for some time: I've seen gold leap up or down, after a Fed announcement was released, in a matter of microseconds. HFT tradebots do that for ya. ;)

Conventional markets move so fast, there's no way that any trustless peg could be implemented: network latency would kill it. That's why BitShares' bytemaster settled upon the median of the prices broadcast by all the delegate nodes.

The only other way would be to accept a value within a specified range, but that opens up a catch-22. The narrower (closer to precise) the range, the more often that ordinary volatility + HFT + network latency will cause the auditor bots to reject a valid value. The wider (farther away from precise) the range, the greater scope there is to run a long con that "takes a clip from the coin."

I'm only guessing here, but I think that bytemaster first thought of a range but rejected it when he saw that catch-22.

Today, on 27 of May, the Bytecoin team has updated Bytecoin to version 1.0.4. The main part of the update is the Bytecoin RPC Wallet that substantially improves operation of third party applications and services in the Bytecoin network via RPC.

Thanks to RPC Wallet the merchandisers can easily connect their shops to the Bytecoin network and start automatically accepting payments. This service will also boost performance and simplify connecting exchanges and other third party services.

Main features of Bytecoin RPC Wallet:

  • Much attention has been paid to Wallet efficiency. Bytecoin RPC Wallet requires small amount of RAM for operation.
  • Being cross-platform, RPC Wallet can run as a daemon (Linux/OS X) and as a service (Windows).
  • RPC Wallet is capable of processing 3 times the amount of transactions per second (tps) compared to our previous solution, the RPC Simplewallet. The total amount of tps is now 60.
  • RPC Wallet supports approximately 10,000 remote connections. It greatly simplifies connection management for 3rd party applications.
  • Bytecoin RPC Wallet provides you high-level security. It is impossible to get access to Wallet’s private keys via RPC.
  • Developer-friendly and minimalistic interface allows for flexible setting any required functions via RPC-requests.
  • RPC Wallet can start up an internal node of the network, or it can use external node in case you need to save resources.

The Bytecoin RPC Wallet is more flexible and functional than Simplewallet RPC interface, superceding it. Therefore, Simplewallet RPC interface will be deprecated later on.

The Bytecoin release 1.0.4 contains refactored and optimized daemon. It enhances code modularity and allows us to tremendously increase software test coverage. The team has introduced a new multi-threading library that makes daemon behavior more predictable. It will be released as a stand-alone project later on. Moreover, we have improved console logging.

GUI Wallet has also been updated. Now it supports selection of color themes. It is also capable of flexible connection to remote daemon or start an in-process node.

Bytecoin RPC Wallet can be built from the sources (https://github.com/amjuarez/bytecoin) or downloaded here (https://bytecoin.org/downloads).

Please feel free to discuss it here. (https://bytecointalk.org/showthread.php?tid=47)

Edited (13 July, 2015): updated versions 1.0.5, 1.0.6, 1.0.7

Bytecoin roadmap has been updated up to the version 1.1.1.

https://bytecoin.org/static/img/bytecoin-roadmap.png

We have just updated Bytecoin to version 1.0.5. The following features have been introduced:

Bytecoin Reference Client

1. Real-time transactions pool synchronization is a solution, which guarantees that all network nodes have similar unconfirmed transactions lists. As soon as one node receives user's transaction, it ensures that this transaction is included into transactions pools of all nodes. Therefore, every miner will have a complete unconfirmed transactions list. Read more in our blog post that covers the solution (https://bytecoin.org/blog/unconfirmed-transactions-pool-synchronization-solution/).

2. New network library with network code operating significantly faster than the existing solution. It allows for increased stability of data exchange between the nodes in runtime. We are planning to release this library as a stand-alone project so that any p2p app developer can use utilize it.

3. Block Explorer high-level API has been added to our APIs. With its help, developers will be able to create services that obtain data directly from the blockchain. We've used this interface to integrate Block Explorer into the Wallet. Read more in Bytecoin Wiki (https://wiki.bytecoin.org/wiki/IBlockchainExplorer_methods_and_callbacks)

4. A new method "list_transfers" has been introduced in Bytcoin RPC Wallet allowing to receive all incoming transactions regardless of their payment_id.

Bytecoin Wallet

5. In-wallet integrated miner and block explorer. These features turn Wallet into an integral 'control center' allowing to receive and send transactions, mine BCN using any pool, and navigate inside in-app block explorer.

We have just updated Bytecoin to version 1.0.5.

Hey! Many thanks!

I have updated my gui on one windows machine - looking very good.

Got my bytecoind running on another Win8.1 x64 machine; Didn't have to reindex, just had to delete p2pstate, poolstate and then good to go - I was using a really old one there!

However the simplewallet loads up my wallet just fine.

Thanks for your ongoing hard work!  ;)

Bytecoin 1.0.6 updates CryptoNote and upgrades e-commerce integration

Today's release introduces an updated Bytecoin RPC Wallet for e-commerce with a new feature called aggregate multi-addresses (https://bytecoin.org/blog/aggregate-multi-addresses-ecommerce-enhancing-privacy/). In short, this feature allows services to create a branch of unique addresses to easily differentiate users. This feature is a significant update of the CryptoNote protocol:

  • It effectively depreciates payment_id (a formerly indispensable part for any CryptoNote currency)
  • It facilitates web wallets operation
  • It greatly upgrades Bytecoin integration and deposits by allowing to assign each user with a unique address
  • It reduces server resources required for maintaining dozens of users' addresses
  • It increases overall privacy of Bytecoin

There is more to 1.0.6 release than just aggregate multi-addresses feature:

  • Updated IWallet and IBlockchainExplorer high level APIs
  • Traffic between the node and the wallet has been optimized providing faster synchronization

Towards easier integration

Now all you have to do to integrate Bytecoin is:

1. Install Bytecoin RPC Wallet
2. Generate users addresses for each new user (through Bytecoin RPC Wallet API)
3. Process the payments in a matter of seconds

Important note: updating your Bytecoin RPC Wallet service will not disrupt your currently established system. This update is entirely backward compatible with payment_id deposits even though payment_id will be depreciated in further releases.

Update explained

The core idea of aggregate multi-addresses can be described as 'shared half of view key', i.e. common data for all users, namely key 'a'. Keys 'b', surely, are unique for each user, which implies different 'spend keys' and different addresses.

Bytecoin 1.0.7 have been released.

Today we’ve released Bytecoin version 1.0.7 and Bytecoin Wallet version 1.0.6.

This is a major update for Bytecoin network and we urge everyone to update your clients (https://bytecoin.org/downloads/) and wallets to the latest version to ensure compatibility with 1.0.8 version.

This update features:

  • New feature called Fusion transactions. This feature is designed to help users combine smaller transaction inputs into the bigger ones. Fusion transactions are going to be a part of the block and won’t take up more than 30% of the median block size.
  • Various Simplewallet and Bytecoin Wallet improvements

In this update we’ve introduced new daemon rules, users will be able to optimize their wallets in 1.0.8 update that is coming up soon.

Bytecoin Wallet can now import and export tracking keys. Tracking key is a combination of public and private keys. Anyone possessing wallet's tracking key can view all funds that were transferred to the account, but he can neither view the outgoing transactions nor spend the money.

As we mentioned before, this is a major update that introduces new block template rules. Download latest version of Bytecoin reference client and Bytecoin Wallet on our Downloads page (https://bytecoin.org/downloads/) to ensure compatibility with 1.0.8 version.

You can find more about the 1.0.7 release here: https://bytecoin.org/news/bytecoin-major-update-1.0.7-introduces-fusion-transactions/

New Bytecoin Release 1.0.8 introduces fusion transactions and wallet outputs optimization

On August 27, we have updated Bytecoin to version 1.0.8. This version includes update of Bytecoin Wallet that enables Fusion Transactions that were announced previously (https://bytecoin.org/news/bytecoin-major-update-1.0.7-introduces-fusion-transactions/). What's more, the updated Reference Client features a number of optimizations and improvements based on your feedback.

Fusion Transactions provide users with possibility to automatically optimize their accounts. The optimization process runs in background, and it is easy to launch by ticking a single box in the settings.

https://bytecoin.org/static/img/fusion-optimization-large.png

This optimization will be useful for those users whose Bytecoins are split in multiple small outputs. Such situation might occur if, for example, one receives large numbers of tips to the account or uses pool, which transfers money to the user in multiple small payments (e.g. earlier versions of open source CryptoNote pools). Besides increasing convenience, such optimization will also improve the privacy level of the wallet owner.

Technically, optimization is a fee-free money transaction to yourself such that the number of outputs becomes less while the outputs themselves grow larger. Such a transactions is called Fusion Transaction. If optimization process is on, the wallet will automatically select the outputs that should be fused.

At the moment, only closed beta version of the latest Bytecoin Wallet is available. If you want to participate in account optimization testing, we can provide you with Wallet with Fusion Transaction enabled. To obtain the wallet please contact us (https://bytecoin.org/contact/), and we will send You the link for download.

In addition to new type of transactions, this update contains other improvements:
1) Instant transactions notification is now available for Wallets connected to remote daemons
2) Reset feature for Bytecoin Wallet to resync your wallet data from the blockchain
3) IWallet High-Level API has been significantly updated
4) JSON RPC interface improvements for Bytecoin Reference Client and RPC Wallet
5) The sync process of Bytecoin Wallet on OS X has been improved.

The latest Bytecoin Reference Client and RPC Wallet version can be found on our website (https://bytecoin.org/downloads/). To obtain beta version of Bytecoin Wallet, please contact us (https://bytecoin.org/contact/).
