Title: XFX 5850 unstable at stock speed?!
Post by: nazgulnarsil on May 29, 2011, 01:37:54 AM
Edit: Okay I left the card running stock speeds overnight because of the problems I had when OCing.  I set the fan at 90% and the card seemed to be staying pretty cool. When I woke up the comp had rebooted.

WTF  >:(  Could this be my PSU and not the card?  It's a 450w that i've had for a few years.  Full system with a 5850 is supposed to draw <350w.

I'm also getting 85C at stock speeds when fan control is set to auto.  When manually set to 65% fan speed it goes down to 65C at load.

end edit.

This is a non reference card (they make reference and non-reference)
I'm getting 273Mh/s on stock speeds on guiminer.  When I tried to ramp it up it crashed, with higher OC's crashing sooner.

seems like I might as well have saved $40 and gone with a 5830.

does anyone have any advice?

what sort of boost have people seen from down clocking memory?
should I try bumping up voltage from stock 1.09 to see if that makes OC stable?

What's the talk about the ATI stream SDK?  Do I just go to the ATI download site and install it for a boost?

Cool story bro.

What are you using to OC it?

Mine are running @ 865 stock voltage 315M hashes.

My 5830's run @ 965/175 @ 288M hashes.

While I do have some XFX gear, it is cheaper stuff and the fan is not as good as the reference design.  Stick with standard clocks for that card if it is stable.

that's what I was thinking because if it crashes when I'm gone that downtime starts eating up any small gain I would have had from OC.

what about the stream SDK?

You didn't ask for help in your original post; you were just ranting. You went back and edited it.

I thought that I was looking for advice, since everyone seems to be getting 300Mh with 5850's, was implicit.  My bad.

And how far did you push it? And what were your temps?

I got 4 of these a few weeks back I do 880/350 mem and get about 350mh with pheonix+phat miner. One of the cards is a little bitch and I had to set it at 850/350 to stabilize it. Other than that they have been working fine other than my friends diamond 5850 did 410Mh without any effort.

up to 900 mhz seemed stable for the 3 minute bursts I was doing before bumping it up a little more. my temps were 88C anywhere between 850-900.  at stock 725 core temps are 75C.

I think I'll let it run stock for a day at least and then maybe when I'm less frustrated try memory underclocking.  crashes take like 5 minutes to get back up and I get impatient way too fast.

temps?

also how do you use the phoenix back end for guiminer?  I select new openCL miner and then the bitcoin directory comes up and asks me to select a miner.

I was really weirded out by getting a crash at 800/1000 randomly after 10 minutes.

Also: what ballpark increase did the downclocking of memory give?

900 should be perfectly stable 24x7 but you need to raise the fan speed.

I was at 100% fan speed at 800/1000 temp 71C when I crashed.  Did I just get a really unlucky card or was it perhaps a fluke of settings?

I'll probably try again tomorrow when I have some more patience about waiting for my computer to reboot.

also: currently using MSI afterburner.

Ah, you seem to have raised your memory clock. Try bumping it back down to 900 (as shipped).

weird.  I havent touched memory clock...

just looked at specs page and they all say 1000mhz is stock.

well at the very least running stock numbers is stable.  I was worried.

2x5830 (975MHz core clock, 340MHz mem clock) fan @ 70% getting 281.6 per video card, over 500 mhases.

I tried overclocking the 5830, took a dump on me. I feel safe at 975.

I get 304Mhash/s with my 5830 and 350Mhash/s with my 5850, temp at 70C for both

My XFX 5850 from TigerDirect has been running at 825/500 for 2 weeks straight. I couldn't get it any higher.

42% fan, ~72*C with ~77*F ambient air.

I get crappy clock speeds with my crappy power supplies. Check yours to make sure that's not the problem.

450watts is what you draw from the wall then it has to be converted to dc power considerable power loss between the 2. Consider the following any usb deices and so forth take power another thing to look into is was there a beep when ur card failed? try over clocking till your computer shuts off. Listen to the beep patern from the mother board watch how many long and short bees then google it. Chance is that its lack of power could be other stuff thogh good luck

nothing other than normal startup beep when I get a shutdown so far.

I guess I'll get a new 600+w PSU for the overhead.

I've been fighting my xfx 5850 for two days finally I found a bios config that worked for me,  I dropped the memory down to 300 mhz, increase the fan to 100%  and was able to get it stable at 1000/300 with a 1.15 v core it does 391 mhash.   I couldnt get it stable without the voltage increase and my current temps are 47.5C(150cfm delta intake fans)  I couldnt get it much higher without it crashing but its been running for about 2 days now without an issue.   Check your voltages, sometimes the card will crash without a major temp, just depends on the card I imagine.

you on the reference or non reference card?  reference has fan at the end, non reference has fan in the middle.

I recommend a larger "Newer" power supply at least 600W for your setup.

then your aged 430W PSU gets hot and is being taxed 100% the voltage droop can cause the instability you are looking at
