Title: A few neat ideas...
Post by: AT101ET on May 04, 2015, 08:52:16 AM
So, I've been thinking... (Yay me)

1) Now that the forum is pretty big and sees a lot of visitors, posts and threads a day, a large number of the posts are spam or bumps etc.
Users often reply to a thread with +1, I agree, ditto and many other ways of announcing their agreement.
To avoid this, can we apply a like/invite system to each post? Say a person likes the post above him or a post somewhere in a thread, all the user needs to do is hit the arrow button which adds to the number of likes/dislikes that post has. That will be bound to cut quite a few posts out daily.
Mods can also implement a new rule that states those who don't use the system but rather post likes and such will be suspended. A reaper violation of the rule will lead to a banning...

2) With regards to bumps, threads are often bumped, especially by the OP (very often in the marketplace section). There are those users who delete their last bump post on their thread before reposting the bump, but what about having an automatic bump button?
Say a seller wants to bump his thread, every 24 hours he should have the option on his thread to 'bump' it. A designated button on the original post should bump the thread up automatically wothout having the need to post an actual bumping up post. That too should also cut back on the many useless posts the forum gets...

3) I like the idea of tagging users (read it on here before but including it anyway).

4) Quote and tag (3) notifications. - Should you be quoted or tagged in a post, instead of going back through pages ad pages in a large thread, simple notifications of the quoted or tagged post could redirect you directly to the specific post.

5) More organised PM inbox and outbox. I'm not exactly sure on the best way to do this, but my PM box for example is very cluttered. I have PMs from various users which come mid conversation with another member. Just a possibility, but perhaps all PMs can be sorted out under each user (kind of like a Skype chat style layout). I can click on a user in my inbox and see all the messages he/she sent me and my replies in a chat layout with dates above each message to show when each were sent).

What do you think?

Edit: Added some other ideas (they may have already been suggested).

These two suggestions have already been discussed and I would prefer also prefer having an automatic bump feature just like we have the option to Lock/Delete a thread. The Like option would make a thread look unpleasing as I have seen posts which get 150+ likes and the look is quite disturbing.

The like feature will result in less +1 and agreeing posts but it could make it more like people posting for likes as in Social media sites. we don't want that here ,do we?
Th bump feature though sounds good but i don't think is necessary, a person have 2-3 posts then if there is an automatic bump, the post will become in unread section since last visit and will cause confusion. On the other hand, it will be a ease but it's better to bump manually than being automatic but wouldn't mind seeing an option for it and it's upto OP if they want automatic BUMP on or not.

To make it clearer and to avoid confusion, by automatic bump, I meant that the OP would manually need to click a bump button say as pointed out above, alongside the lock/move thread button. By clicking the button (only possible once every 24 hours) the thread automatically rises to the top of the list in the sub without any bump posts having been posted.

Those posts aren't allowed and will be removed if spotted or reported.

A like button is ok, but giving one any power to do something is a bad idea. Trolls/alt accounts will abuse it or just people who merely don't like what the person has said.

I've suggested a bump button before but not sure an auto-bump feature is a good idea but one that only lets a user bump his thread once per 24 hours should be ok.

I think that thread is the most viewed in this section, but it has been ignored by the overpaid developers for some reason.    :-\

The Like/Dislike system won't be implemented. The Admins have said in the past that they don't want to turn discussion into a popularity content, so it wont happen. The automatic bump button is something that has been discussed, and I believe it will be added. Pretty much just as you proposed. It will be a button that the OP can hit that will put their thread back onto the first page, but wont require any posts and therefor won't clutter threads. It will still be limited to 1 bump per day.

Yeah. that sounds better, it will avoid Deleting previous bumps and will lower the hassle for Staff too.

 -snip-

We don't need a dislike button, only like. Dislike probably will be abused more than like. Like will be useful to avoid spams.

Fair point. What I meant originally was that the like button was just there to show how many people agreed with that post. By liking a post, it doesn't do anything other than display how many people like it. That way you can avoid the posts such as the '+1' and 'I agree' posts etc.

I have edited the OP and added some new ideas. I will probably continue to do so as opposed to creating a new thread everytime.
Some ideas are bound to have been mentioned before but I'm not searching through all the posts in this sub so I apologise if that's the case.

Exactly.

So Facebook, the world's largest website, got it wrong?

(They only get 4.5 billion "likes" per day...)

-discussed features-

3) I like the idea of tagging users (read it on here before but including it anyway).

3) I support this and there should be an option for users who want to turn off notifications.
4) Didn't get you.
5) You could create a new label and move all messages from certain users to specific labels but an automated system will be useful.

As I have already said:

The differentiation of colors between the various forum ranks, and the possibility to lose the activity points (and obviously the ranks- if someone is banned).

So, I've been thinking... (Yay me)

I support the idead 2 & 3 and I think it will be really useful if them will be added in the new forum software (when this forum software will be released).
