Title: BREAKING: Satoshi Loyalists Upgrade to Bitcoin XT Before Deadline

Bitcoin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin) enthusiasts the world over have now reached a monumental crossroads. They can remain loyal to Satoshi’s hand-picked successor, and switch over to Bitcoin XT, which will feature new and improved 20MB blocks, or they can stay with the legacy core and risk being left behind.

Last Friday, in a bold move that would have made Nakamoto proud, Bitcoin Chief Scientist Gavin Andreson, announced that he would override the outdated rule (http://sourceforge.net/p/bitcoin/mailman/message/34155307/) of gaining consensus among core developers and hard fork Bitcoin with his friend Mike Hearn. Once these code changes are implemented, people on the old chain risk being left stranded at sea.

"The purpose of this process is to prove to any doubters that they’d better start supporting bigger blocks or they’ll be left behind, and to give them a chance to upgrade before that happens."

Upgrading to the Bitcoin XT is as easy as downloading Bitcoin XT and copying your wallet.dat file over to the new directory. It is recommended that users upgrade to the new client before the fork. If you don’t want to get left behind, you can grab your copy of Bitcoin XT from this download link (https://github.com/bitcoinxt/bitcoinxt/releases/tag/0.10.1).

Once you install the software, you should see something resembling the above screenshot when navigating to the debug window. As one Bitcointalk user pointed out (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1077374.msg11509670#msg11509670), both the legacy client and the XT client will work until Gavin implements the hard fork.

"Network and blockchain-wise, Core and XT are exactly the same, for now. XT just has different functionality."

Many Satoshi loyalists decided to begin the painless upgrade process (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1077374.0) to XT today. If you need technical support during the upgrade process, there are plenty of friendly folks ready to provide assistance at BitcoinTalk.org (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=4.0).

1) Increasing the blocksize limit does nothing to solve the problem, it just prolongs it. Assuming that Bitcoin grows exponentially in the future, then the blocksize limit would have to be increased again, and again, and by then hardforking will be much more serious and dangerous.

2) Moving to Bitcoin XT with only two developers there, Mr Hearn and Mr Anderson, is a bad move towards centralization.

Upgrading to the Bitcoin XT is as easy and downloading Bitcoin XT and copying your wallet.dat file over to the new directory.

I'm not ready to take sides yet, I think there can be a solution where the current core devs don't break up.

Also, you don't have to copy your wallet.dat. It runs on top of core and uses the same directories.

Per the github:

Bitcoin XT is more experimental than Bitcoin Core, and has a strong emphasis on supporting the needs of app developers and merchants. By running it you not only provide additional services to the network but help build confidence in the implementations, contributing towards consensus for inclusion in a future version of Bitcoin Core.

XT uses the same data directories as Core so you can easily switch back and forth.

I have a few question if anyone can help:

After Gavin switches Bitcoin over to Mike's Bitcoin-XT project will my BTC be blacklisted (http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-tracking-proposal-divides-bitcoin-community/) if I don't meet the deadline?

Also, I'm really looking forward to being able to prove my identity in order to use Bitcoin, and wonder when and how will it be accomplished on the XT fork?  Will the NFC on my government issued passport be of use?

I assume that's sarcasm after rereading it. The first time I read it I almost gasped, lol.

After the hard fork, the Bitcoins you own now will remain safe, but you will be required to upgrade in order to send or receive. :-*

Will I lose all of my bit coins if I don't upgrade? I'm scared... I think it is easier to just dump. This is why common folk like me won't touch this shit. What the hell is going on!?

When is the deadline? I searched in the internet about this and there is no info on the deadline. I am not sure there will be a fork.

Time to actually learn about bitcoin, dumbass. Your activity is over 400 and still doesnt understand shit.

Also are you too dumb to read threads in this section? Many threads already explain this FUD.

As the article say, there are lots of friendly and experienced Bitcoiners who are happy to help you make the transition over here on Bitcointalk.

Time to learn about respect, dumbass. Your activity is over 700 and still rude as shit. I am reading on this recent development now and found no info the deadline and so I am asking. It could be mentioned somewhere I missed.

Gavin has not released the Deadline. I think the best guess at this point is sometime around Feb 2016.

There is no dead line for any of this. You should read up on the recent events about the proposed 20MB block increase. The core devs are not agreeing on what should be done.

It's no wonder Vladimir Marchenko started a fully moderated Bitcoin forum years ago. Too bad Vladimir was a scumbag. His forum was actually pretty nice. So was his mining pool.

Why are other developers against a move to Bitcoin XT?

Why are other developers against a move to Bitcoin XT?

Because they have a conflict of interest. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1075323.0)

I suggest everyone should go listen to the audio recording in this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1075510.0).

The OP is full of it. There is no deadline.

Also I want to respond to the idea that increased block size will not solve the problem because the size will need to be increased.  First off it is a problem that need to be addressed.  If we ignore it then things will get truly bad for bitcoin.  Second technology is increasing all the time. My first computer had 300MB hard drive when I was a kid, and cost (adjusted for inflation) about twice what my current laptop cost.  By the time the block size get too big to handle my guess is that technology will have surpassed the point that it needs to be in order to handle more bandwidth, storage, and computing power.  Third it may be a temporary fix but it is better than giving in to developers with a conflict of interest or doing nothing.

Some of these developers already got a scent of the NEW money with Bitcoin-XT ....We have reached a point of no return.

On the one hand, you have Satoshi purists, who believe the Status Quo will make NO difference AND on the other hand you have people who want to take preventative action. {Some of them with hidden agenda's}

How do you bring these two groups together? We need a Nelson Mandela here, that can step back and say ...." What is the best for Bitcoin " .... NOT " What is the best for me "

This is going to get messy, and it's not going to be good for Bitcoin.  >:(

Im getting quite sick of this shit. The conflict of interest really fucks this up and is really showing why we are being steared away from 20mb blocks. Its quite clear what we all need to do in my eyes..

There is no decision making mechanism in the current bitcoin core devs group, thus the chaos

In fact bitcoin is centralized around its protocol, the protocol is very centralized, there is no freedom in selecting different parameters of the protocol, that's the only thing that all the bitcoiners agree upon. So the protocol should be highly centralized around those basic promises like limited total coin supply, shrinking block reward and block reward incentivized mining

But block size limit clearly showed that even a small disagree on one of the parameters of the protocol can make it split, so it is better to let the rules written into stone and no one would be able to change it in future (So that we don't run into these political fight again and again in future)

Satoshi said the block size limit can be lifted when needed, but even raise it to 20MB will not be a permanent solution, a permanent solution will be either totally removing the hard cap (soft cap can still be set by miners) or set the cap by a dynamic formula. A genius formula will be the real solution but that requires huge wisdom, maybe Satoshi will throw in a formula some day

That is the holygrail of bitcoin.

I agree that the obvious solution is a sliding scale for the block size.  You think it would be easy because they already do this with the difficulty.  However I know little of math and I am sure that it is more challenging than it seems to the layperson.
