Post by: spyro on June 04, 2015, 03:18:19 AM
Back again, looking for some coins that may have slipped my radar over the last year. List your top 5 altcoins (WITH REASONS WHY)

Please make your reasons relate to the actual coding of the coin, unique features, active developers, amazing community etc.

Check out the version of this thread I posted in 2014 to see how things have changed in the last 1-2 years.

remember back when you were young, that first girl in your class who developed the 'assets' of  womanhood  ... NXT is like that girl ... most other coins are immature by comparison. monero is best anon, but NXT anon MS coins are coming soon anyway

hands down it's NXT. other coin that might be promising would be ethereum, but its vapor ware until an actual release. the only thing i see they might have over nxt is the marketing and vc backing. but technology, nxt is in the lead by a big margin.

here's some screen shots of the nxt wallet in action...

C'mon, OP asked for some reasoning behind your choices people.

1) BitShares - Delegated proof of stake consensus enables decentralized governance via stakeholder voting for roles (witness, delegate, worker). BitShares is the first distributed ledger network to pay the devs that wrote it. Quickest block intervals (currently 10 seconds, soon to be 2), first platform to implement collateralized stablecoins without counterparty risk, on-chain decentralized exchange. The "industrial" blockchain. Engaged community and visionary dev teams (core devs in Blacksburg, bitsapphire in Kosovo, DACPLAY in China).

2) Bitcoin - tried and true, a crowd favorite. Also I like being able to spend cryptocurrency so although I don't hold onto very much BTC I do convert to it on the fly using gateways like metaexchange.info, shapeshift.io, and blocktrades.us.

3) Ethereum - cool project, good vision, looking forward to seeing what it can do when it stabilizes.

Honorary mentions: I've heard Qora is doing some cool stuff with AT. I also would like to learn more about the state of anon coins like dash & monero.

2. Bitcoin--the original and I can keep it in my 401K.  ;D

Don't study coins outside of privacy concerns, so 3-5 will remain blank until a feature(s) i want jumps out at me.

LTC also has some good rises.

I'm seeing NXT on almost every post. Can people expand on the exact reasons for putting it on their list?

I feel like there's too much blockchain bloat going on. What exactly are they doing to address this? Blockchain Shrinking? What are the technical details behind the rolling genesis block every node generates?

Simple put, could  NXT support millions of transactions per hour at it's current stage? The blockchain would be impossible to download after a month for regular users. How are they addressing this?

Fair enough blockchain bloat effects all coins, but particularly with the amount of data NXT stores on each transaction it'll require x100 the storage per transaction.

Forgive me if I've missed out on anything obvious

I don't know enough about what is going on in the NXT ecosystem, but in general don't see any benefits to using its on-chain exchange over BitShares. It is slower, there aren't any market pegged assets, and it does not include on-chain governance features that I know of (electing roles via stake-weighted approval voting). Also, I think bytemaster makes some compelling arguments here (http://bytemaster.bitshares.org/article/2015/01/07/The-Most-Decentralized-Proof-of-Stake-System/) and here (http://bytemaster.bitshares.org/article/2015/01/13/Decentralization-of-Nxt-vs-BitShares/) as to why BitShares has a larger degree of decentralization over NXT. In general I'm not very interested in traditional proof of stake as the block rewards centralize towards the largest stakeholders, due to their increased chances to sign a block proportional to their stake.

BitShares will also scale to enable VISA / NASDAQ levels of TPS; the next major release will support 100,000 transactions per second.

 ::)

Bitshares is "decentralized" like the Federal Reserve is decentralized.  Effectively, a very small minority of the wealthy can rig all the delegate elections, thus control all the block producers, because they use approval voting.  The worst thing that can happen in NXT is a large stakeholder can forge the same percentage of blocks as he has stake.  This is fair because everyone produces blocks in proportion to their stake.  A large NXT stakeholder cannot influence who the other block producers are.  A large BTS shareholder can influence who is "elected" as a block producer beyond the proportion of Bitshares they own because approval voting allows them to throw the full weight of their vote behind multiple candidates.  Approval voting is unfair. (http://www.fairvote.org/research-and-analysis/blog/why-approval-voting-is-unworkable-in-contested-elections/)

DMD Diamond: 2 years on market, no premine, no IPO, fair coinrollout, high POS rewards but still constant decreasing inflation, POW/POS hybrid, awesome website https://bit.diamonds/
XMG Magi: high active community, dedicated people, some nice coinrollout mechanism, far undervalued, POW/POS hybrid
Bitcoin: not as much potential for value gain but will stay the backbone of cryptobusiness
NEM: even if after launch still lot stuff is missing it have potential as a true own codebase crypto ecosystem
XPY: after get rid of joker garza and a big value loss this coin have the potential of comeback of the year once the dev team releases the changes in primecontroller mechanics

Best thing about threads like these are that they are a good indicator to shrewd long term investors which coins to avoid.

The level of aversion should be directly proportional to the frequency of mentions.

Wrong. For example I was reading this kind of thread last year in march and they mentioned DRK the most. I bought a few, but I am sorry, that it was not more...
Of course it makes sence, the most mentionend is something most people believe in.
Of course you can fake that with a lot of socks, but in general its a good indicator...

Here is the list with the (imho) greatest potential of raising:

1. NXT - The most accepted 2.0 coin with that low marketcap? Here was already a LOT of selloff. I expect 10x-20x on the next btc bubble
2. Ethereum - maybe on release a little selloff but then I think we can see here 10x easy
3. Bitshares - here was a selloff. I expect 5x on the nxt btc bubble
4. NEM - a very nice project and probably due for a big raise on the next major release. I would like to put it higher, but as it is very low ranked yet, there are some risks. can easily go 100x but can also die if people don't believe in it...
5. Stellar - a very wide spreaded coin that has still a low market cap. I guess it will skyrocket soon. But here is also a chance for fail...

Also good potential: Crypti, Dash, Ripple, BTCD, Clams

and a comment to monero/BCN:
here could be also a good potential. Problematic is the "I was first" (but secret and that means like premining) mentality of BCN against the open Monero community.
I personally don't like pow anyway, thats why I have not much of both. Just for the case...

I'm surprised no one has listed the big one Zetacoin.  Anyway here is my list with reasons:

The 5 innovators:

1) Bitcoin - For being the first ~2009
2) Namecoin - For decentralized DNS ~2011
3) Peercoin - For it's PoS/PoW Hybrid ~2012
4) Zetacoin - For it's difficulty re-targeting algorithm and high transaction capacity. ~2013
5) Dash - not for X11, but rather for Masternodes. ~2014

Yes, while many other 'altcoins' may have the same features as the ones listed above.  The ones on this list are considered the innovators since they initially introduced these ideas.

Litecoin (~2011) didn't make the list since it really didn't offer much in the way of innovation.  Litecoin did not first use Scrypt, Tenebrix did.

XMG or magicoin
- because it can only be mined using CPU

ZRC or Ziftrcoin
- because its new and also has a online shop to back it up

If it's about innovation, I would choose, in chronological order:

1) Bitcoin (for obvious reasons, 2009)
2) Namecoin (descentralized DNS, 2011)
3) Peercoin (first PoS coin) (2012/13)
4) NXT (first fully-working PoS coin without centralized checkpoints, 2013)
5) Slimcoin (first Proof of Burn (http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Proof_of_burn) coin, 2014)

I spend a fixed amount of money every paycheck on crypto-currencies.  This is my breakdown.

1  Bitcoin   66 percent
2  Bitshares  5 percent
3  Next 5 percent
4  Maidsafe  5 percent
5  Monero  5 percent
6  Counterparty  ~3 percent

The rest I just purchase really small quantities or top up some of my other holdings each pay.

I also already have a large enough stake in Dash and Ripple that I only purchase small quantities of them now.

The Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Russian: cъeзд КПCC) was the gathering of the delegates of the Communist Party and its predecessors. According the party statute, it was the supreme ruling body of the entire Communist Party.

delegates

Bitshares has delegates.  Bitshares is very popular among us Communists in cryptospace.  :o  "Free" coins all failing right now, while Bitshares' first 5 year plan is producing immense success.

Thank you Comrade.

Urgent message to the Comrades of the Engineering Department of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Bitshares....

Please fix the Windows desktop Wallet!!! It is slower than a Trabant and uses more memory than a Russian Grand Chessmaster! Or please, please, please... once and-for-all... create an "official" online browser-based wallet with trading interface (see RippleTrade!!!)

With dreams of our glorious Red Flag flying, with the sweet thunderous sounds of Katyusha rockets, and with visions of sexy Russian mail-order brides, and in honor of the smoothest triple distilled vodka...I would ask all fellow Bitshare Comrades to humbly click on the link below and stand proudly to our alt coin Anthem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sxTbfeYdO0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sxTbfeYdO0)

In the immortal march of Bitshares we see the victory of Crypto Currency!!

:D

H.

LoL LOL That was the funniest post I have ever read in this place :-))))

Anyway, I have informed the comrades in the Agit-Prop Bureau about this new development and requested to update the Marxists-Leninist directives to include Bitshares in our current 5 years plan.
Together, with the hard work of all comrades and the integration of Bitshares we will win the war against the bourgeoisie, and we can get 240 km/h from all moskwitch Mocквич, the car of working class comrades.

That is true.

Today those features may not seem like much and we take them for granted since other alts like Dogecoin get most of the glory.  Such things were innovative when Zetacoin was first introduced, especialy it's difficulty re-targeting algorithm which to this day works perfectly without a glitch.   Also, Zetacoin has never hard forked.

Bitcoin's biggest current issue is it's transaction scalability, to the point where it will need a hard fork to 'fix'.  Zetacoin was built from the start to scale.  In a way, I think of Bitcoin as the 'experiment' and Zetacoin as the actual final product.

There is only 1: Zetacoin

Reason: it's basically the same as Bitcoin but improved.

  • Unlimited Supply/Low inflation
  • Faster Blocks, 20x more transaction capacity
  • The only one that is not a pyramid scheme/pump & dump, etc..
  • Early adopters have no more advantage than a late adopter.
  • Even distribution

Zetacoin is indeed a truly fair and just Cryptocurrency.

Title: Re: Your Top 5 Cryptocurrencies? (2015 version)
Post by: Lloydimiller4 on June 19, 2015, 10:09:13 PM
I am only currently interested in two cryptocurrencies. I only own Monero, and I only use Bitcoin to buy Monero. Some people will think that is crazy (probably most people), but I think it is A. my best chance to make money in the world of cryptocurrency, and B. the best looking crypto that exists, and probably will be that way for at least another 3-5 years.

1. Monero, it is in my opinion the only crypto of its kind. I understand it is hard to use for a lot of people right now/has a higher barrier to entry for people that aren't as techie, but I think this makes it that much more undervalued. I believe it has the best anon tech around, no flashy gimmicks. This is -incredibly- valuable. It doesn't suffer from the fungibility problems that I believe will plague non-anon cryptos in the next few years. Fungible money is of the utmost importance. Monero is also on a completely different codebase from Bitcoin, I think this makes it an incredibly valuable alternative and also a great hedge in the event of Bitcoin suffering from any misfortune, such as a hardfork (1mb blocksize limits).

Monero has a pretty awesome name, once it grows on you. It means coin in Esperanto, an international language.

Monero is CPU and GPU minable right now, which is the best. GPUs only slightly outperform CPUs, and it will forever stay that way, which is amazing, and IMO the best. period. When ASICs come out for Monero, they will only perform about 5-8x better according to some researcher of the algorithm, which is awesome. period. I think ASIC developers should be rewarded for their efforts, but not just given everything like in fucking bitcoin.

Monero is perfectly fungible thanks to its anon tech, I believe that there is not a single other cryptocurrency that can claim this, so that is a pretty big win there.

I don't like PoS, I think it is basically a scam, but I don't really want to get into describing why because it is easy to understand.

I can also use my Monero to pay for any bitcoin service anonymously thanks to xmr.to a webservice that does what I just described.

So check Monero out if you haven't. Feel free to PM me if you have questions, I'll try to answer them or at least point you towards someone who can.

2. Bitcoin. I list Bitcoin under Monero for many reasons. I love Bitcoin, it is the OG of peer 2 peer decentralized electronic money. Bitcoin has its fair share of problems though. My biggest beef with Bitcoin is the current state of mining. How is a decentralized currency supposed to remain decentralized if the miners/processors of transactions are so few? Only about 10 ASIC manufacturers are responsible for ~90% of the mining for Bitcoin. This is a HUGE problem! Bitcoin, in my opinion might be destroyed by this. It entirely goes against Satoshi's vision of 1-CPU 1-Vote. Monero doesn't have this problem, and will likely never have this problem. Monero is and will forever be CPU, GPU, FPGA, and ASIC friendly for mining, and does it with extreme fairness. This is much closer to Satoshi's vision than even Satoshi's child, bitcoin.

Next, we have the issue of 1mb block size limits. I don't claim to be a genius who knows all the details on this, or how to fix it, what I do know is that the community is split on what the answer going forward is, and that it will need a hardfork most likely to fix. This is bad news. Monero does not have this issue, it has no limit on blocksize that scales with the network already hardcoded into it.

Fungibility, this is something that everyone should familiarize themselves with if they haven't already. We already know that you can divide a bitcoin pretty much infinitely (or down to 1 satoshi right now) but, the problem of Bitcoin's fungibility comes from the fact that you can trace every transaction on the blockchain. lets say regulation enters the bitcoin space, and criminals or even law abiding citizens caught with *marked* coins (coins that were stolen, used for illicit purposes like drugs/money laundering/whatever) can't spend their coins anywhere. all of a sudden this becomes an issue. This has already started to surface, if anyone remembers BTC-e trying to block the sale of bitcoins used in the Evolution exit-scam, and there have been a few other cases. So, it is entirely possible that some ordinary Joe, decides to buy some bitcoins, he accidently obtains tainted coins, and now he can't do anything with them. Monero doesn't have this problem because it is anonymous, therefore you can't tell if a coin is tainted or not.

------------------------------------

Since the OP wanted 5 coins, I will list some more, but I do not hold any of these coins really, only mine some because I was suckered into buying some ASICs, hooray me /s

------------------------------------

3. Namecoin. This coin offers some incredible domain hosting stuff or whatever it is called lol. I am honestly not too knowledgeable on the details, but I was impressed with what I saw. I like it because it is unique and actually adds something usable, though it suffers from a lack of development.

4. Litecoin. This coin is actually what got me interested in cryptocurrencies though I have known of bitcoin since early 2010. Too bad for me I didn't get involved until 2013, when I decided to mine some Litecoins on my GPU, but oh well, learn and live. I still mine some Litecoins on my KnC ASICs, but I sell them for Monero as I mine them. I think Litecoin sucks now and has practically no use anymore. I consider it a failed experiment due to ASICs and the fact that you cannot GPU or CPU mine it. It is kind of interesting because it is very slightly different than Bitcoin, but it truly has no use. I don't think it will die for another couple years though, and maybe if the devs for it come up with some radical new ideas it could live forever, but I doubt it. It does have a decent name though, but that doesn't give it any real use.

5. Primecoin. I like it because it looks for prime numbers (at least I think it does?) so that is kind of neat. I mined some on a few servers and made some money back in 2013, so that was fun. It is junk now though, though if it breaks more prime number calculating records I will think that is cool and possibly useful to some mathematicians or scientists, but probably not.

what is not to like about DogeCoin?
  • it has a nice community which is always active and consists of many Doge Lovers and enthusiasts.
  • it has active developers.
  • it's price went up in comparison to a couple of months ago, and it looks good so far.
  • you can do a lot of Doge tipping all over the place.

LOL, I don't get it either.  From an economic/investment view, it's nothing but guaranteed loss.  Sure it's over hyped, but that's about it.

Most put LTC, DOGE, DASH or NXT to the list. This is good cuz i lost faith in some coins especially LTC but more recently he is climbing again and that is good.

Lets face it no sane investor is going to pay top money for a gold mine which is depleted. In case there is some small scraps left over he is not going to invest a lot to mine the left overs.
No difference in the new digital version. Is it so hard to find 5 mines with a lot of gold coins to extract?
Money itself is free or i get paid using it, like Ripple laps pays the banks a few million xrps so they publicy say that the use Ripple laps now.

BTC, LTC, DOGE, DASH, NXT, BTS these are NOT the top five of 2015 ... they have already arrived.
PP, xMR, and Name are here to stay also.
Ripple and Stellar are NOT Crypto ... they are Corp.

for 2015
1. vert
2. black
3. pot
4. uno
5. flo

vert and black have already made the move
pot uno and flo will earn their marks before 2016

Those coins you mentioned have been out since 2014 and have yet to go anywhere in the meantime.  Granted a lot of "legacy" projects (Doge, NXT, LTC) only maintain a higher capitalization, in the first place, due to the whales regurgitating from the 2013 Chinese pump.  Welcome to the world of penny stocks err I mean cryptocurrency.

Still those legacy projects have yet to recover to their former glory and recovery is hard because there are armies of bagholders who are desperate to cash out and they are willing to take X% losses to do so.  This is well documented with NXT where, each time there is a rebound, some whale or group of bagholders will dump it back down and it's very predictable too.

If we're dealing with strictly 2015 releases then the most successful so far is probably XEM (March release).   I guess number 2 would be PayCoin, if you count December 2014 as being close enough to 2015.

So far it has been a big surprise that XEM outperformed PayCoin, if you consider the resources and networking Josh Garza had.

Otherwise there simply isn't many 2015 releases so far.   Having gone through Coinmarketcap, seems like almost everything in the top 40 came out in 2014 or years earlier.

I'm 95% focused on Ripple. 4% focussed on Ethereum and 1% focussed on Bitcoin.

Everything else is a waste of time, effort and money.

Ripple that centralized bank coin? Enjoy your freezable accounts, I think your focus is very misguided and should probably be switched around.

Ripple technology is inherently distributed. Ripple's leadership has centralised aspects, sure, but why is that inherently a bad thing?

Look at Russia, the EU and the Ukraine. Russia has centralised leadership and can easily outflank EU ministers who need to phone around to get a time that they can all meet (about a week or two later) and make a decision by committee (which more often than not is not the optimal decision). Meanwhile, Putin has his fighter jets in the air and laughs after his breakfast workout.

Do you have any examples of decentralized human decision networks from today or the past that were greatly successful and/or still survive?

Keep pumping your time, effort and money into Bitcoin so. Bitcoin is old technology, boring and no longer innovative. The Bitcoin community has become nasty, bitter and not very pleasant.

Ripple is compatible with the nation state model, yes. Nations control and regulate their currency (and defend their borders, keep law and order, a judiciary, provide infrastructure, public education, public healthcare, etc.) That means paying your taxes, obeying laws and adhering to regulations.

If you don't want that, feel free to conquer your own territory and have Bitcoin as your currency. Nothing stopping you from doing that. But be warned - there is no such thing as distributed governance. You are into crazy experimentation there. In Lord of the Flies, a few dozen boys end up on a desert island - it's not long before power structure emerge. Bitcoin does not rewire human nature no matter how much faith you put in it.

If you want to freeze someone's Bitcoin, you simply kidnap him and put a gun to his head. $500 to hire a squad of bodybuilders. So your "freezable accounts" comment really is incidental in the grand scheme of things.

There is a reason I invest in precious metals and that's because governments are corrupt. An ounce of silver isn't corrupt but the US Dollar sure is and the same thing goes for Bitcoin. The idea that you need to conform to the government fiat is dumb, if governments want a crypto they can deal with it won't be Ripple it will be UScoin, or Eurocoin.

It's healthy to be skeptical of government and not have absolute faith in government.

You cannot print Bitcoin, nor can you print Ripple. Sure you can trade in fiat IOUs through Ripple gateways, that's your free decision, but you still can't print XRP.
