Our IT help desk here go rushed with calls about being unable to connect to various websites.  This has been fun!

The quickest way to recover from this once and for all is go set up a $50 account at any other DNS provider, duplicate your entire domain there, and then change the DNS entries for your actual domain name so it points to servers belonging to BOTH providers simultaneously.  As soon as that takes effect, you'll be up regardless of who gets DDoS'd (unless it's both at the same time - which is far less likely)

I'm using WorldWideDNS.net and DNSMadeEasy.com (so please don't DDoS them simultaneously) - both are cheap, easy, and reliable (minus the occasional DDoS!) and recommendable.  Both give you full control over the DNS itself while offering you an easy wizard if you don't need to hand-tune anything.

Just to make it clear, I am proposing having both companies be primary, rather than having a primary and secondary (so what I am proposing is technically a misconfiguration - and requires you to double the work every time you want to change something - but pays off in other ways, for example, it allows me to have a low TTL so I can change my DNS on a dime if I have connectivity problems elsewhere, without any of the problems normally associated with low TTL's).

not hosted at godaddy, just using them for DNS.  But after this, we will definitely change that.

no wonder i couldn't get to some sites
did some command prompt whois queries today, noticed godaddy's whois wasn't responding, thought maybe they got tired serving remote whois queries. didn't occur to me their whole op was down, that's a big one.

i have domains registered with godaddy but hosting my sites/dns records elsewhere and fortunately my sites are unaffected.

GoDaddy is terrible. Not only the SOPA thing, but their fee structure is a real pain to parse, their cheap hosting accounts are slow (in my experience) compared to other similarly cheap hosting, they do not take security very seriously (will elaborate below), and I absolutely loathe their management interfaces.

Regarding security, a client of mine who does all his DNS and hosting through GoDaddy had a vulnerability on one of his sites (not one that I coded), which allowed the attacker to embed code on ALL his other partitioned sites on his account. I spoke with GoDaddy customer service about it immediately, and tried to give them a bunch of documentation including the injected code and some external articles about this particular attack, and THEY DIDN'T CARE AT ALL!! They did not want the info. They considered it entirely my client's problem that a vulnerability in one site allowed other (ostensibly separate) sites on his account to get compromised, and all the rep tried to do is sell my client an $80/yr "protection" service of some sort.

GoDaddy is the worst major provider out there. I highly encourage everyone to migrate. Personally, I use icdsoft.com for small/cheap stuff, and Rackspace for bigger clients. ICDsoft is a little old-school, but they've been rock solid for the 10yrs+ I've been using them, and their support is awesome (especially for cheapo shared hosting).

GoDaddy is so bad that I'm toying with the idea of adding a 10% surcharge to every client of mine who insists on using them.

I would like to take this time to recommend OVH for web services.

Excellent reliability. Excellent speed. Excellent customer services.

They also hinted at the possability of accepting bitcoin in time to come.

I have been using them for over a year and wouldnt switch for anything. The prices are fantastic.

Had a customer on a OVH shared hosting.
There where about 9223 million backdoors on that linux box and someone kept deleting random files.
Their security is a pain in the ass.

Wow. That's a pretty significant internet blackout. Number of sites affected?

In 2010, it reached more than 45 million domain names under management.[4][5][6]
Go Daddy is currently the largest ICANN-accredited registrar in the world, and is four times the size of its closest competitor.[7]

How long did this "outage" last?

Bitpay.com went back up for me before GoDaddy.com. I suspect this is because you added another DNS provider as backup. Well done.

True but one can have redundancy across multiple DNS providers to deal with this. By the way it appears that Bitpay has just added http://www.buddyns.com (http://www.buddyns.com) to get DNS redundancy. That is why their site is now up.

It does not require a fortune to get up time 9's. One can make very significant improvements in uptime at very little cost just by saying no to the marketing BS that companies like GoDaddy spew out.

Edit: Also GoDaddy is still down. Fortunately for BitPay they had registered BitPay.com through another registrar MONIKER and it appears this allowed them to add the additional DNS servers through another DNS provider. So kudos to BitPay for not putting all their eggs in one basket.

Yes, you are correct.  we were able to add buddyns.com this afternoon once we learned the nature of the problem.  You may now resume spending your bitcoins :)

I got this e-mail from one site affected by Godaddy downtime:

Quote
Today, GoDaddy (our domain registrar) suffered from a service outage which resulted in millions of sites going down. Unfortunately, we was one of those.

GoDaddy's servers are still recovering, but we've since switched to using Amazon's domain name services instead. Our site was down for a few hours in the transition period but everything should be back to normal now, though you might encounter a few residual issues as our domain name changes propagate through the internet.

You can read more about the GoDaddy outage here: http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/10/godaddy-outage-takes-down-millions-of-sites/

We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for bearing with us as we were working to restore access!

Funnily enough, I did not receive a single e-mail from Godaddy, and I do have an account with them.

GoDaddy said it was caused by corrupted router data tables.

http://thehackernews.com/2012/09/anonymous-hacker-take-down-godaddy-with.html

Am I the only one that's slightly annoyed about the picture of Danica Patrick, racing star, being depicted on everything that has to do with GoDaddy?

I am a customer with them because I need certain services, and no matter if they supported God, Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Bieber or whoever, it would not make a difference for me.

So I'm thinking, is people really this stupid? They see some good looking lady associated with a company, and they go all drooling over each other to become a customer, or they would say: "Yeah, I'm a customer of Godaddy, same hosting company as Danica Patrick uses.

I always wondered why famous people often 'prostitutes' themself in TV-commercials, often they're promoting outright fraudulent products as well (not that I say GoDaddy is a fraud). I guess many people think that the words coming from the mouth of a celeb holds higher value ? Beats me!

I am not just slightly annoyed. This is precisely the reason I avoid companies like Godaddy as a customer.

I am a customer with them because I need certain services, and no matter if they supported God, Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Bieber or whoever, it would not make a difference for me.

It makes a hugh difference to me. Celebrity endorsements are very expensive. The money has to come from somewhere either higher prices or poor service or both. In this case it looks like both. There are many far better alternatives for domain registration and DNS hosting.

So I'm thinking, is people really this stupid? They see some good looking lady associated with a company, and they go all drooling over each other to become a customer, or they would say: "Yeah, I'm a customer of Godaddy, same hosting company as Danica Patrick uses.

Yes a lot of people are very stupid. That is why companies like Godaddy spend billions of USD a year on celebrity endorsements and lavish marketing campaigns. In this case one can choose between redundant DNS and better uptime or a celebrity endorsement. The redundant DNS does not cost more, in fact in some cases it may actually cost less. It just means that your site stays up.

I always wondered why famous people often 'prostitutes' themself in TV-commercials, often they're promoting outright fraudulent products as well (not that I say GoDaddy is a fraud). I guess many people think that the words coming from the mouth of a celeb holds higher value ? Beats me!

For the money. For many sports celebrities this is their major source of income. I do not blame the celebrities for earning a living, I just choose not to pay them by purchasing overpriced and / or substandard products or services.

Whether it's corrupt tables, NSA op, or anonymous script kiddie, the solution is the same.

Namecoin peeps, get your DNS servers and websites running please!!  We're counting on you when for when the shit hits the routing table.

Actually Namecoin does not solve this problem at all. An incompetent DNS host that chooses to spend its resources on celebrity endorsements rather than server redundancy can fail for the exact same reason even if the root servers were based on Namecoin.

The CEO sent this mail to all customers, also they gave me a small credit of a few euros (didn't ask for it).

Quote
Dear Customer,

We owe you a big apology for the intermittent service outages we experienced on September 10 that may have impacted your website, your email and other Go Daddy services.

We let you down and we know it. We take our responsibilities — and the trust you place in us — very seriously. I cannot express how sorry I am to those of you who were inconvenienced.

The service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables. Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented a series of immediate measures to fix the problem.

At no time was any sensitive customer information, including credit card data, passwords or names and addresses, compromised.

Throughout our history, we have provided 99.999% uptime in our DNS infrastructure. This is the level of performance we expect from ourselves. Monday, we fell short of these expectations. We have learned from this event and will use it to drive improvement in our services.

As a result of this disruption, your account will be credited for the value of 1 month of service for each plan that has at least one active or published site (Web Hosting, Quick Shopping Cart®, Website Builder, Email, etc.).* This credit will be available to you for the next 7 days. Please click the button below to redeem your credit.

It's an honor to serve you. As always, please call us 24/7 at 480-505-8877 — anytime, for any reason.

Ive got a few sites with godaddy, ill be removing them asap.

Which reminds me to email them and ask them about the stance of their company on SOPA, as thats why the attack went on.

Has anyone actually heard any thing from godaddy in regards to the SOPA?
