New CoinDesk Report Reveals Who Really Uses Bitcoin

Quote
Young, pale, techie and male. Anecdotally, this has been the make up of bitcoin's core community since the cryptocurrency began, at least if media reports and Internet chatter are to be believed.

But in 2015, is this still an accurate reflection of its user base worldwide? In our latest research report – Who Really Uses Bitcoin? – we put this theory to the test.

Analysing nearly 4,000 responses received in our multilingual survey, likely the largest in bitcoin's history, the 45-page report provides an in-depth look at who is using bitcoin, who isn't and why that matters.

Less than 4% of the users are 18 years old or younger? Too bad. And regarding the gender divide (90% male, 10% female), it was more or less on the expected lines. Still I was quite surprised, to hear that North American users account for half of all Bitcoiners. I was always thinking that the number of European users might be much higher than those from North America.

They probably spent quite a lot of money conducting this survey. Remember that it covered 4,000 respondents, from dozens of countries around the world. Also, they prepared the questionnaire in a large number of languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Russian (the translation fees can be quite high, in case of languages such as Japanese).

Hehe. I've been asked why we don't stock any of our Bitcoin tees in women's sizes... I'm always surprised people even ask. That said, I do wish there were a higher demand for it.

One thing I am happy with, is that Coindesk is accepting Bitcoin as a payment method now for this information. { A while ago, they did not accept BTC }  ???

It is sad that only 1.58% of the respondents came from the whole African continent. I sometimes go there for contract work, and I can see a rise in the use of digital currencies.

The North American figures come as no surprise. The household income of 50k to 99k also seemed a bit high to me, I would have guessed a 30k to 40k would have been a good bracket for a average household income to use Bitcoin more.

Still, it shows some surprising figures.  ;D

Well there's no surprises there but I'm sure the early adopters of computers, internet, mobile phones etc etc were all also 'Young, pale, techie and male' too. Bill Gates & Mark Zuckerberg would also fall under that when they made their billions.

There are very few local exchanges in Africa. It is even quite difficult to trade your Bitcoins through Localbitcoins. The situation is slightly better in South Africa and Kenya (esp. in the city of Nairobi). In most of the other countries, it is extremely hard, if not impossible to do anything with your Bitcoins.

I expect this stereotype to be true last year, I think the bitcoin demographic should have changed this year. There were 4000 respondents to the survey, how many any of them came from here? I wasn't aware of the survey myself. Could the survey reflect the CoinDesk readers' profile more than real bitcoin users?

Yup.

At risk of caricature, their problem is something like:

"We are not a professional survey company but we just did a survey of what may be the most privacy-oriented group on the planet, and for only $99 we'll share with you all the juicy details that they told us. Here's a free teaser".

They do not have my stats - but that's just me.        ;)

The USA is kicking 'ass' when it comes to being a place where you can actually use BTC. I don't know what much of Europe is like, but in the UK there are still very, very few places to spend it.

I would've thought sub 18yr olds would be a fertile market. Buying it is a problem for them. Earning it isn't so simple either.

Hmm... most of the college kids have a problem with their finances, especially in the Western nations. But it would be fun for them, to get some spare change through freelancing or part-time work. And it will be even better, if they earn that in the form of Bitcoins. Anyway... I think we need to increase our coverage in the social media sites, as the teenagers are most active there.

Mh...I expected the the largest user bases are in North America and Europe. But I thought Asia would be large too. The pics shows a different result :/
