Title: Clues for the origin of the name Satoshi Nakamoto
Post by: danalex on September 14, 2012, 10:45:50 PM
The origin of the name Satoshi Nakamoto may be related to the very famous Japanese musician:
                                 "Ryuichi Sakamoto"
Also it may have a connection with the word "Satori" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satori
which makes me think he likes Buddhism and Zen.

Ugh I can't remember his name exactly, but there's an established cryptographer with a name like Hiroshi Osaka or something ridiculously similar to Satoshi's name. Quite a bit more relevant than this connection. Can't really give too much meaning to similar looking anglicanized Japanese names.

Satoshi Nakomoto is word most likely invented by westerner. Like Yamomoto Kamikaze or Sepukku Fujitsu.

As for the origin of the name, this was the best I've ever offered up.

I'm inclined to lean toward the following reason:

Quote
When they weren’t busy mining, the faithful tried to solve the mystery of the man they called simply Satoshi. On a bitcoin IRC channel, someone noted portentously that in Japanese Satoshi means “wise.” Someone else wondered whether the name might be a sly portmanteau of four tech companies: SAmsung, TOSHIba, NAKAmichi, and MOTOrola. It seemed doubtful that Nakamoto was even Japanese. His English had the flawless, idiomatic ring of a native speaker.

Agreed. 'Satoshi Nakamoto' had always sounded unnatural to me.

Why?  It's a Japanese surname and a very common first name.

Nakamoto could be translated as "the centre of things".

Its a game going on for years now (Started July 31, 2006) and is older than BTC.

Nakamoto --> No Idea.

Something about the construct doesn't sound right. I had never heard that Japanese name pair before.

I believe there is some traditional conventions as to which first and last names to pair.

It's kind of like "Bart Rockefeller". It's just weird, but a Japanese kid might think it's a perfectly OK name from watching American TV.

Seriously, people give unnatural, or even downright ridiculous names to their children. My granny had a neighbour and his name could be roughly translated as "IWelcomeYou".

As for Satoshi, from what I've heard, he most likely isn't japanese.

I had also heard it was from a popular game or cartoon character.

I think they just wanted to create a name which sounds funny in the West.
