There's a lot of cynical talk on this forum. Here's one example how writing a letter to explain your frustration or disappointment with business or government CAN make a difference. Granted, this is about Taylor Swift's recent letter to Apple. She has clout, people listen. We can make the same impact not by one letter but by many, there's power with the people.

SO when you're frustrated with some government or corporate or social decision...organize, draft a message, and get your group to send it to anyone who matters or can influence the decision. The power is with The People...let's not forget that.

I would rather start a petition A petition is more legitimate, people can leave their remarks along with their personal details like signatures or email IDs for validity proof. A company responds faster to petitions than a letter, it gets more attention and if you're lucky, a newspaper might run it too providing more attention to the issue.

Yes, petitions are more straight and to the point. However, they might seem to be more commanding and a way to seek cheap sympathy while at itm but if the reason is a legitimate one, petitions are the way to go. Their failure rate is also pretty low compared to just writing letters to an organization.

You sure? Petitions are written in some certain situations and letters in other. Petitions, in campaigning, are formal requests made to a decision-maker, government or other public entity, that are signed by an individual, or a group of people in support of the cause. On the other hand, Open letters are letters to decision-makers that are published through the media, so as to emphasize the addressee’s responsibility in the matter and to provoke a public debate.

And for the US Gov, you need 10,000 petition signatures to get a response but some target letters could get your legislators talking, and they already have the ear of the President!

I prefer to wither down my opponents through economic warfare and change the world for the better than try to compromise with people who hate me anyway, Bitcoin is doing far more to oust the banks than writing a letter ever could.

Call me cynical, but such letters go straight to the trash can (or recycle bin).

Well, Big Organization like Apple can consider the value of any letters sent to them, However it should match their business straits. Sometimes they consider the public feedback and try to change some portion of their business strategy, but it shouldn't much affect their ventures income and profits.

Nice thought. But I am not sure if it will work with common people. Common people makes lot of hue and cry, sometimes alone and sometimes in groups, but still most of the things goes unnoticed with the decision making authorities. Or even if it gets noticed, the solution is tweaked such that it remains in favor of the decision making authorities.

And therefore, petitions. If you have a valid motive, an important concern, a lot of people will agree with you because if course they feel the same way about it. Unity is strength, and if a said 10k people sign your petition, the god damn company has to fucking listen.

What support do you have that petitions get paid attention to more than active and direct communication/requests of political leaders? Petitions can be tossed in the trash can just as easily, no?

There have been a lot of petitions and only very few work, if any at all. Businesses are only going to change or make a move if it's in their best interest to do so, regardless of whether a letter was written or petitions were signed.

Thing is, if you petition evil to stop being evil, evil will orgasm that you are wasting your time petitioning them. Want government to stop being evil? You better have googolplex dollars to tender bribes with your petitions.
