Title: Help me choose a pool
Post by: MrLenin on September 18, 2012, 11:33:40 AM
Hello, i've been interested in bitcoins for over a year now, read a lot about them and the economic theory behind them, but i never got into mining. Now i have started mining with my ATI Radeon 5850, which gives me 62 MH/s. It's not much but as my power is free i thought why the hell not. I have been pool-mining at BTCguild, but i have started wondering if another pool might suit me better. The choice of BTCguild was more of a "first and best". Anyone have suggestions?

5850 should give you up to 350MH/s, something is wrong in your setup.
About pool - use P2pool :)

You should give bitminter a try, Im sure their super-simple java client would also fetch you more than 62Mhs, aslong as your gpu is what you say. www.bitminter.com

you are most likely right, but i am honestly unsure of how to identify and fix the issue. i have a moderate understanding of computers, and i know my hardware. but i have no flying idea of how to configure it for max gain. i am mining with GUIminer.

Go for cgminer: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0
Download, unzip, run.
It will ask about pool settings, just remember to save settings and next time it will use them again.
For p2pool you need change 2 options:
- queue to 0 (default is 1)
- gpu threads to 1 (default is 2)
Do this after you save settings in config file - do it once and forget :)

Don't be offence, but I don't think that you will able to get any profit with your graphic card now...
ASIC is coming, ether buy it or forget about your small farm.

If you are still sure, try several pools to be sure. Choose from those pools, what take smallest fee.

1. We will talk about ASIC when we see one...
2. Fee is not everything. Most of pools is keeping transaction fees from block. P2pool is splitting full block value (block reward + tx fees) and most of nodes have 0.5% or even 0% fee.

while i realize that i wont 'get rich quick' but my power is free as i said, so i might as well make a small amount of BTC rather than none.

Why did you choose it? I see you are a new member and i wonder why someone new would choose the pool with probably the highest fee?

www.PeerMining.us

Zero fees.
No Registration Needed.

I would appreciate donations for upkeep of the server cost/bandwidth/electricity, but it's 0% fees.

Personally, I LOVE BitMinter and will be going back there when I have a BTC-appropriate mining setup.

As for your hashing speed, it looks like most users with your card get the best results using Phoenix.

Try Phoenix svn with phatk kernel and try these settings: fan 100%, vcore 1.1750 V, 72C, VECTORS BFI_INT AGGRESSION=15 FASTLOOP=false -k phatk

You should see upwards of 400 MH/s with that setup.
