Title: Is this about right?
Post by: buddrulez on September 22, 2012, 10:38:04 AM
I am quite new to the mining game and am wondering what I can do to increase this hash rate and if the temps are ok for this setup? Current card is amd 5770.
I am looking to upgrade next week is the 7970 the best bet?

Thanks!

I also have no idea what flags are! I have seen people talking about them on here do they improve performance or what?

in extra flags type in: -v -w 128 -f 0

It's more or less a set of secondary instructions to let the program be a little more streamlined.

Which drivers are you using?
A 5770 should have the flags on -v -w 128 as said previously (that goes for all 5xxx cards).
You'll struggle to get past 200Mh/s on that card but you should be able to get past 180  :)

Im on the latest drivers atm mate and its sat at 184 right now but the gpu is at 80 deg. Is that normal?

Yup, well within good temps. Your card is right around where it should be.

You could always try doing a custom fan curve in afterburner if you want to bring it down a bit, but a 5770 should survive like that for a while.

One other thing: If you're not going to be gaming too turn your memory clock way down. That'll help with heat+power use.

On my 5770 I'm getting around 215 Mhs @ 69ish degrees celcius.  80 may be normal for some but its high for my comfort zone.

I overclock the engine to 935Mhz and underclock the memory to 250Mhz and run -k phatk -v 2 -w 256 in CGMiner 2.7.5.

How does this look for the upgrade? Or would you recomend another manafacturer?

Not bad, although I wouldn't recommend buying one just to mine with, you should see 650Mh/s from that at stock  :)

Fair enough what would you go with then? Just for mining...

I think he means that our GPU's may be completely obsolete in 3 to 5 months so make sure you can use the card for something else when that happens.  Like gaming.

Right now you can't really buy something else that would be better for just mining.  All you can do is pre order an ASIC.  But that won't help you mine now.

Yeah that sounds about right and I suppose the gpu will be worthless when/if it happens! I might just buy some for now and try to reach 1btc by christmas with my gpu lol!

Oh, you'll get more than one bitcoin off your 5770 by Christmas.  I'm running a 5830 and 5770 at about 517Mhs and getting 6 to 7 bitcoins a month still.

Thats a good rate do you leave it running 24/7?

Not at all. If ASICs come out about when we expect them to you'll likely be able to sell your GPUs to gamers pre-christmas  ;)

Yep, have been for over a year now.  Also it has been starting to get down to the high 30's F now at night and I haven't had to turn on the heat yet :).

I agree with this.  The gamer market will gladly soak up 7970s from bitcoin miners for less than retail - $300-$350 or so.  As long as you've had them a few months, you'll have paid for the depreciation.

Yup, I'm selling a few of mine to friends at £240 apiece, I picked them up at an average of £266 each in April, so they've easily made a profit.
